(Casinos) The second biggest little city in the world

Disney has more families than Cedar Point. Universal does too.

It works because CityWalk and Downtown Disney are NOT JUST BARS. Resturants, shops, arcades, movie theaters, nightclubs, and even a few bars.

Cedar Point would have to keep that in mind. CityWalk is Citywalk, but a bunch of bars are just a bunch of bars.

Plus, it would have to be seasonal. There are not enough peeps in sandusky in the off season to support something like this.

Most companies would want to be open year round. I love the idea, but I just dont see it ever going thrue.

I agree that City Walk, and to a certain degree Disney's Pleasure Island, are reasonably family friendly.

But what about kids? It's safe to say that more and more people are waiting longer to have kids. I'm 31 and kid-free, and most of my friends around the same age are in the same boat. We take vacations, have good jobs, and spend money. I'm sure Cedar Point has market research on people like me, and what percentage we make up of the average guests, and I just can't imagine we're that small of a group anymore. I think there's an opportunity there, and in the long term, growing the company and its revenue has to move beyond higher attendance. That's why they built hotels in the first place.

I'm sure we can come up with exceptions, but in Ohio that's just not true. School funding in Ohio is so hopelessly broken and screwed up that even well-to-do districts can't keep up, especially with regards to construction in growing areas.

Jeff> Sure but I'm saying it needs to be both. Places for you and places for them. Just limiting it to one market would be stupid.

In other news... I'd be interested in how many people are "single" (and older than their teens) and go to Cedar Point. Maybe I'll think about that this summer.

Crazy horse> It could be all year... just... weather protected. I talked about that earlier.

Exactly, City Walk isn't strictly adults-only. In fact, any place that is not a bar or nightclub is family-friendly. For example, City Walk has NBA City, Hard Rock Cafe, Margaritaville, and countless shops and vendors that the whole family can enjoy together. There would be something for everyone in a venue like this, and I don't understand why one isn't built.

Cedar Point rocks my socks.

Spoken like someone not old enough to go out to bars.

Or spoken by someone who is old enough to drink and chooses not to.

Present company excluded, of course.

Oh, and MrRider...I am single (divorced) and not in my teens, 20's...ehh, you get the idea...and I make the 5 hour drive to the Point many times a year. Just because you are single doesn't mean you visit alone...

There are some districts that just plain don't have the money. There are also some that have the money but have no idea how to spend it so it is not used efficiently enough. The problem is, there are districts who have enough money and yet they still get more to spend and don't know what to do with it. Why do they get money, because they had enough in the first place to teach their kids so the kids could pass standardized tests. Legislature then thinks the money is being well spent and then the district gets more money that it doesn't need. Meanwhile, another district bombs its tests because it didn't have enough funds to teach the kids properly in the first place, and now they don't get money from the state.

The state takes over your money when you do crappy on those tests. You aren't allowed to spend money on anything (sports, arts, music...) until you get your ass up and out of what they call Acedemic Emergency. Now this doesn't happen in Cleveland because of the way the school is set up and for some reason less is expected of them because of the "finacial status and deep ethnicity of their attendees." But when this happened in Brooklyn, a little school we lost ALL sports for 1 year. Now wouldn't that suck to be a senior? The problem is that schools just don't have money to spend. Yes, some richer districts with higher tax brackets have overspent and thrown themselves into debt. For example (all from Northeast Ohio by the way!) Independence, Beachwood. I mean, they bought their kids laptops THAT THEY KEEP. Yes, there are cases like this but most are just don't have the money.

Now on to the fun topic!
I would love a City-Walk at CP. My parents and I both agreed it was a great idea. It could definately be supported by the demographics of the Point. I see so many 21-25 year old couples who I'm sure would easily spend the night at CP if there was something to do after the park closes. That beachfront would workout really nice after you pop out DT. Of course CP doesn't have a space problem. ;)

I wasn't saying those people go alone. When I said "single" (notice the quotes) I was talking about their personal status. Traveling with peers instead of jr. to grandma.

Just like Cedar Point isn't building new coasters every year because they know all kinds of people go there, they are not just going to build a string a bars.

City Walk is not a string of bars. It is a family atmosphere during the day with fun resturants. Does it get crazy in some of those places during the night... I can't tell you, I'm 14. But I'm sure they are. But it is not just a string of bars.

Don't forget that CP resort guests would not be the only people who would be targeted with a City Walk type place. Sandusky has thousands of boaters from all over that call the city home. That is a BIG market for night time entertainment. If the City Walk type place is good, you'll get boaters in droves attending and take some business away from Put-In-Bay and Kelley's Island. Sandusky's permanent residents would also appreciate some new entertainment I'll bet.

I'd rather be in my boat with a drink on the rocks,
than in the drink with a boat on the rocks.

This is all true about a city walk.

But again, this could only be seasonal due to the fact that sandusky is a ghost town in the off season.

Even if it is inclosed, you will not have enough peeps to visit in the winter. Also, what companies(bars, stores) would want to be open only 6 months out of the year and be profitable?

I think this would be a great idea, but I really dont see it happining.

No reason it couldn't work as a seasonal thing. Famous Dave's and Breakers TGIF are both seasonal. All the establishments can be franchises that are owned and operated by CP, and CP can even create some of their own stuff. Outside companies would not have to be involved.

I'd rather be in my boat with a drink on the rocks,
than in the drink with a boat on the rocks.

The last time I looked Put-In-Bay was only seasonal, and they make a boatload of cash in only a few months.

Cedar Fair just doesn't ignore opportunities to make money. I have to believe there are legitimate reasons why we haven't seen anything like a City Walk at the Point.

And that reason is probably a "you first" attitude. That's why I believe it took them that many years to build an indoor water park.

Jeff - Advocate of Great Great Tunnels™ - Co-Publisher - PointBuzz - CoasterBuzz - Blog - Music

"you first" attitudes suck.

They didn't take a "you first" attitude with many roller coasters. . .

. . .so I think it's time they didn't take a "you first" attitude with entertainment.

I HATE when people are thinking, "Oh, yeah, it's like what ______ has." It's time for people to be comparing what OTHER parks are copying to Cedar Point. :)

I actually am thinking that a large strip of land, catering to the summertime crowd -- boaters, etc., with concepts maybe all by CP, or maybe some franchises. . .I think it could work. :)

We'd just have to make sure whatever the bar/dance club is allows CP employees to come and drink. So maybe that's a reason for a rule change/different owner for at least one bar. (Think of the $$$ dropped at Louie's.) (And BW3). Yes, let them open a fun karaoke and wing place. :)

As Jeff knows, it all comes down to ROI (return on investment). How long would it take to pay off and make money off a facility such as this? You are talking a pretty huge capital expenditure.

I think a legitimate question too is would they be able to staff it? It is not easy to staff a seasonal operation, particularly when there are age requirements for serving alcohol. They struggle each year to staff the park and resort as it is.

Now, if Casinos did come into play down the road then all bets are off...pardon the pun. An entirely new demographic would be visiting the area...many of whom may not step foot in the park.

I agree wholeheartedly.

Staffing at any sort of 'night destination' is more important many times than any other part of the deal.

A beautiful building isn't much without an outstanding staff.

CP would definitely need to step up to the plate and get some real dependable forward thinking people to run any new place like this. The last thing I'd want to do is go to a club/bar that is staffed by some. . .well. . .less than desireable employees.

Its a whole bunch of things.

Where do we put it?
What do we put in it?
How do we get people there (in terms of parking/transport)?
How do we get people there (marketing)?
How do we staff it?
How do we pay for it?

And many more. All factor in some way that makes Cedar Fair think it isn't such a sure thing.

As for jobs... the whole resort needs about 4,100 people each summer. And they expect to get over 13,000 applications this summer. Finding people isn't hard. Finding the right ones...
