Any word or thought on a ride for 2006???

Most guests plan on going weather or not a new ride is added. For me though TTD is why I heard about the park and is why I went. This being said now they have my business every year. What I am getting at is new rides create more people to hear about the park and take a visit.

This then causes those new guests to come every year. Now if you don't add new attractions then you lose these types of guests. In turn you lose attendance.

To me, those so called "drops" really aren't all that bad. They stayed in the 3-3.5 million guest range. Its not like they have 3.2 mill one season then 12 they next. (not 12 mill. Just 12) and with the enthuisiat and locals going many times a year, they adds too it. When im paying 35 bucks a ticket (coupons! yes!) they are still making up for there last "add-on". And if everyone else is paying for tickets or getting there season pass, they too are helping pay for it. The $250,000 for DD is pocket change in a multi million dollar comapny.

A new ride will have some draw. How many people of that 3.3 in 2003 came from out of state? and in 2000? I don't think the locals are as "OMFG!!!1 THE WORLDS TALLEST AND FASTEST!!!" they probably look at it as "Hey new ride!" or "Damn tourist".

"Ive got the need, the need for speed!"

Well I have a question? I know when I paid for my season pass that helped out Cedar Point, but what about parking? I pay parking every time I come, do they make a lot off of that? What about food as well? What if a food restuarant inside the park doesn't do so well on some days?

I think we'd all better believe they're making a fortune in parking stubs.

Cedar Point is making a fortune overall... check out their (publicly available) financial statements and you'll see what I mean. So, for all of these attendance fluctuations we're talking about here are all quite small (these are all percentages from the average attendance (3.22 million) 1999-2004):

  • 2000: +5.7% (MF)
  • 2001: -3.6% ( ... )
  • 2002: -0.5% (WT)
  • 2003: +2.6% (TTD)
  • 2004: -3.6% ( ... )

So, its pretty obvious that new coasters attract more guests. And (I know I'll prolly get flamed for this, but...) WT is not really a coaster, so with significant rises/falls associated with the major coaster debuts, I can see why CP likes adding new coasters often.

Something else I thought was neat, adding MF brought in an extra $8.2 million over the previous year. Considering CP operates in the black already, thats a pretty darn good ROI for the first year of operation! Also, TTD brought in an extra $4.4 million over the previous year. I'd like to go back and look at other major coaster debuts to see how much 'extra' money they brought to the park. Does anyone have those attendance records, say 1994-1999?

(( Of course, these $$ values are assuming full price funday tickets, starting @ $41 in 2000, and increasing by $1 every year to present ))

That's not even including the in park spending.

884 Coasters, 35 States, 7 Countries

I'm sure a lot of that Is General Admission. I wonder how much of that is on Food, Sovenniers, games, and parking?

djDaemon's avatar

My $$ amounts up there are strictly based on attendance (i.e. ticket sales only). Thats also assuming all those people paid the full adult price of admission... so if you were to factor in the food, you'd have to also account for the proportion of those ticket sales that were junior tickets and senior tickets (and season passes, etc - not sure how they count all that stuff).

You should count in atleast $15 per person on food and parking on average. Smart theme park goers will spend like $5-8 in park and the idiots who play games spend like $25.

Also a couple pages ago Amtrak Chicago-Sandusky service was mentioned. If you have never ridden Craptrak then you dont kno that a 2hr trip to Chicago = 3hrs into Chicago, due to massive delays related to freight trains which royally skrew Amtrak. The answer is highspeed dedicated lines which will become a topic soon in Washington when gas hits $3.50 thanks to the hurricane in the south. If you didnt realize its 66% cheaper to go 300 miles by train then car.(Stats from a Californa inquiry on highspeed rail from San Fransico to L.A.) The smartest thing government could do is create a highspeed network(TGV style) after they annihilate Amtrak. This would benefit places like CP, Door County, PKI, and other big tourist attractions that have suffered from the high gas.

I hope CP gets a Floorless or a Huss Topple Tower and a Huss Giant Topspin.

It would seem that the gov't could simply increase funding to Amtrak if it was seriously interested in reducing our dependence on fossil fuels, but sadly they are not concerned with that. So for now you'll have to continue to rely on 'snail-rails'... or Greyhound.

Also, I'd think the average per-person spending is higher than $15. I've never been so lucky to spend $15 or less when I've visited the park, with the exception of when I camped there (before they destroyed the campground), I probably spent close to that, but I was also under 10 years old. I think I spend about $50-75 on average when I visit, and that's for 2 people, so I'd figure about $25-$30 per person... I think I'll start a thread asking how much people spend on an average day at CP.

If you look at Holiday World and King's Island, they have been having increasing attendance without adding lots of roller coasters, but instead focused on some more family-oriented rides and attractions. Cedar Point is lacking in this area, and I think this is where they need to improve.

On a side note, I went to MI Adventure last week, and the Tornado slide over there is very popular. It could have easily had the longest line in the waterpark. I will be surprised if Soak City doesn't get one of these soon. If I were putting it in, I'd put in such that you get a great view of the funnel from the Magnum lift. It would be a great way to advertise the ride and get people into the waterpark.

If the Tornado slide is what I'm thinking of, then it would go great in SC. Personally, it looks like a lot of fun.

Smoking Marijuana isn't a bad thing or even a good one, like everything else, its what you make of it.

Examples of the Tornado Slide: Funnel of Fear at Michigan's Adventure, Zinga at Holiday World, Liquid Lightning at Geauga Lake, etc...

What I'm wondering is would Cedar Point add more then one slide then Funnel of Fear? Because It would make more sence to me to add a Tornade slide, plus a couple more slides. I like the slides that race at Kings Island. Those replaced the High 90 degree slides that no one ever went on. Another theory I have is would they replace any of their water slides? I mean I like looking at the waterpark the way it is.

Being at the park yesterday and today I rode CCMR and saw absolutely no markings that looked like construction, and that goes for the rest of the park too. I'm doubting that we will be seeing something new for next year, hopefully something smaller for the kids.

We ate at Coasters tonight before we left the park and for my mom, my sister, and I to eat it cost $34. Do with that what you will but I think that is quite a bit for 3 people to eat a meal. My mom didn't mind spending that much because we were at an amusement park and it is to be expected.

We'll miss you MrScott and Pete

2007 will have something great in store. Look at Mantis then 4 years later.......... MF. Humm and there was a kiddy ride in 1999 and a big flat in 1998........ anyone see a resemblance.

I'm thinking if we don't add anything next year, it's because of the high gas prices and hurricane Katrina that knocked over the oil Refineries. Cedar Point might cancel next years attraction and just lower prices, maybe general admission.

They would not lower prices. I can guarentee that.

Don't start counting your coasters before they've hatched. :)

And sorry but I'm not seeing a resemblance....It might just be me. :/

It's the same argument people make with calculating 540 feet with be the next coaster record-breaker height. (205, 310, 420..)

It's all fun and nice to see a pattern, but that doesn't mean that there IS one that is being made by the park. 9/11 happened on the date that spells out "9-1-1" but that doesn't mean thats why it was done.
