Let's say for example you work an O-C (open to close shift) on a Saturday in May.That's a 12 hour shift (10am-10pm).
Assuming you aren't on a ride with early entry, you'll get to your ride at 9:30am.
You'll do opening duties like cleaning your ride platform, sweeping ques,de-cobwebbing,and getting ice and water for your ride's water jug.
After that you'll take positions and run whatever safety checks your ride has (light curtain, ride stop, gate checks, open restraints, etc;),then you test ride!
Ride will open at 10am.
You'll start in whatever position you end up in,and rotate every half an hour or so.
Breaks will start when the 11:30am shift people get there. You'll continue working until you are sent on break.
After you get back from break you work more...and rotate, and work, until your next break.
yadda yadda yadda....the rest of your day is pretty much the same until closing.
Your ride's line will close no sooner than 10:08pm (possibly a little later if you're on a ride with a 'soft' closing line).
All riders in line when the line closes will still be able to ride.
After the last ride is given. The ride will be shut off and you'll collect things like height sticks, microphone sets, and entrance/exit/crowd boxes and take them to controls.
Crew members will be dispersed for closing cleaning duties like sweeping ques, cleaning the platform, butt picking (collecting cigarette butts and other small garbage). You'll also switch locks for all low zones, and collect any articles that have fallen into them.
After all the closing duties are done everyone gets to leave. One person will have to take whatever articles were lost at the ride to Lost and Found.

Throw in a few guest complaints, mechanical downtime, weather downtime, and guest illnesses and that's pretty much what every day will be like. You won't O-C every single day obviously,so sometimes you'll open, sometimes you'll close,or sometimes you won't do either.

Whoever gets to the ride first.Or whoever asks first. Some crews probably have other ways of deciding who gets to test ride.
Its different from crew to crew.

Gotcha, and thanks for the post. How much break time do you usually get a day?

JPS

I always hated split shifts. The days are long and hot, but in the end it was my best summer.

It says online that we have to do lift walks frequently? Is that true? If so I hope not too frequently haha.

Depends on the day...some days you won't even go out on the lift.....then other days you'll have to run up there every other train...just depends on the clientele of the day, and their level of direction following abilities...and if the mechanical gods are smiling.

For what reason would you have to go on the lift?

Mechanical, people pull out a camera/cell phone, or if someone unfastened a seat belt
