There are a lot of cranes for just four supports.

Yeah you would think they would need two at the most. 2nd support is up and 3rd is rising.

The supports, as best I can tell by their design, are not freestanding. They require the motor assembly at the top to keep them all from toppling over. So you need cranes to support them all while the motor is lifted and attached into place. This is also the reason why its a one day job, you don't want to leave a bunch of unsupervised cranes overnight with heavy loads still attached to them.

Yeah, at the top there is a big gap between supports, if you look at pkd's giant frisbee they are closer together.

They will probably lean them all in closer once the motor is lifted up to them.

I looked at the webcam and said "Oh man, they're doing stuff, I gotta go check the boards!"

Sure enough, an overblown play-by-play.

That made my day. :)

The supports are sort of on a pivot or whatever you call it. Here's a picture of what the bottom of each leg looks like. Picture Here's what they connect to. Picture

Jeff, who was that directed to? If it was me I must be missing something, because I'm confused.

Welcome to Cedar Point's Crane Emporium!

I think half the cost of this thing must have gone toward crane rental!

On a more serious note. Who does the actual construction? Does CP/Huss/whoever find some local contractor or are there a few "Amusment Ride Construction" companies out there that travel the country just to do this kind of work.

If I recall correctly, TTD was built by a local ironworkers company.

Gomez,

magnumxl2005 in all his excitement said "workers just lined the secound support up wrong or something"

I think that is what Jeff meant.
