2003 - Wicked Twister Crew
It was a news item on CoasterBuzz. It's a waterpark/resort developer from Wisconsin Dells planning to build a facility in Sandusky. From the sound of it, from Cedar Point's perspective it's little more than another local hotel. The outfit that needs to worry a little about it is the Great Bear Lodge.

In any event, the Great Bear Lodge is an overwhelming success...year round. Other companies are looking to cash in and another resort is being planned. Two sites are being looked at. One out on 250 and another on Cleveland Rd. across from the Radisson. This hotel is supposed to have the largest indoor/outdoor water park in the world.
While not direct competition for Cedar Point, I think Kinzel and the gang are impressed with the success of GBL and have discussed doing something similar under the Cedar Fair/Point brand.

...and the most anticipated event of summer 2003 is...
The Matrix: Reloaded!
It fits in with the Camper Village area and they could utilize some Soak City components like the Wave Pool and Bubbles Bar by using domes such as the Golf Dome found on Rt. 2.
Put a big convention center in the area that is now Circle B of Camper Village and you have an attractive year round revenue site for Cedar Point. Heck, they could give guests of Radisson access to the lodge waterpark and increase what is dismal winter attendance at that property too.
Who knows water parks and hotels better than Cedar Point/Fair?

Conventions are typically scheduled in the spring and the fall. If Cedar Point and Soak City are closed will guests really want to be confined at the tail end of an otherwise abandoned peninsula for the sake of an indoor water park?
The reson conventions flock to L.A., Orlando, Miami and San Diego is because they are near golf courses, walking distance to fine restaurants and with ample lodging options beyond the convention hotel.
You also need a major airport that is not an hour's drive away unless you're thinking exclusively about smaller localized conventions.
The Sandcastle transformation into an indoor water park resort is great. In season it will be the perfect respite for rainy days and maybe they can milk off-season events from time to time -- but the convention center itself would be a waste of money and real estate.
***I'm sure someone would've evntually, gotten around to it, anyway.***

Paris, there is a great need for local convention space. One of the reasons WDW is in trouble right now is that many companies cancelled their conventions in light of travel and security issues. Convention business pulled WDW through the off/shoulder seasons as evidenced by the number of convention resorts they have built (Coronado Springs the most recent).
There are a lot of small to mid-sized companies in Ohio, Michigan and Indiana that can't afford to take their employees on a big retreat or convention. If there was an option to drive to a unique destination and thus keep the price reasonable I believe there would be a huge market for it.
I think the Peninsula and a covered waterpark would be exactly what many companies would be looking for. Cedar Point could put together a business seminar going "behind-the-scenes" that I think would interest many people.
During the season, the Point could use this convention center for weddings. I know there is a great deal of interest amongst people to get married at the Point. The Point has never really encouraged this but it is an untapped market in my opinion.
Imagine:
You and your wedding guests arrive at the Peninsula Resort (lame name). You have your rehearsal at the convention center and then have your rehearsal dinner at the Bay Harbour Inn. Everyone gets twilight tickets to enjoy the park that evening.
The next morning everyone meets in the convention center (or at a Wedding Pavilion on Millennium Island) for the ceremony. After you say I do you head to MF or TTD to kick start your marriage.
The married couple enjoys a wonderful beach front suite with in-room jacuzzi tub, Resort robes, and complimentary champagne. The guests (with kids nipping at their heels) run into the park for a fun afternoon.
At the end of the night you all meet at the Summer Spectacular with a reserved seating area. The happy couple makes it, or they don't, and everyone had a great time.
There are so many packages they could offer. A wedding cruise on the bay/lake. A beach wedding. A wedding on any of a number of world class coasters.
People would pay big dollars for this. You should see what they pay at Disney. If done right, this could be very popular.
