Winter tours of the park

I don't know if this is just specific to me, but I have always wanted to take a tour of CP during the winter. How does one get granted a tour? I know asking CP would be a start but I wouldn't expect them to take time for me and just a couple of people. Is it possible for a pointbuzz member tour of the park? Has anyone tried to organize something of this nature before? Has anyone ever been on a winter tour? What was it like and what parts of the park did you get to visit? I wouldn't mind paying a fee either to cover the employees cost for the day either. Any suggestions?

I suggest asking PR or park officicals. Last year I was granted a Tour of Waldameer. I wanted to Job Shadow there so Nancy Gorman (Daughter of Paul Nelson) offered me some time to come up. It was real nice I got there She gave me some press releases of the RF2 and one of the first prints of the 2008 brochure. She was real nice gave me some great history of the park and what its like to manage a park. She describe it as wearing many hats. She took me into the Maintmence Dept where I ment Steve Gorman and The head of Maintmence. Also got to see some Rehab work on the Steel Dragon. She took me all through the park and into the Ballroom which was very nice. Also let me tour the construction of RF2 which was very cool and I got to meet the person incharge of the Project Construction who gave me a summery of his history with building roller coasters I has done 30+. I got to go the the very corner of the Bluff where the RF2 flies down which was dangerous but awsome.

I dont see Cedar Point having a problem with it as long as you have a good reason and not just stoping by for something to do. Good Luck

I am not sure if I would be intrested in a winter tour, I think it would kinda chilly. I would be however intrested in like a historical guided tour that encompassed the whole park and breakers hotel. You know stop by DT say this use to be disater transport, but before that it was, and before that this was here ect ect. The plaques around the park are few and far between and well the City hall Muesuem is nice but to be taken on a tour to locations could for me at least put things in a better prespective.

Shoot the rapids, tame and dry. Thunder Canyon, wet and laughter. Snake River Falls, soaked and smiling. White Water Landing and the old shoot the rapids, Fun and missed.

CP in the winter is an awful, brutal place. I've done a lot of construction tours over the years, and some have been terrible. I remember one in particular for Millennium Force, where it was windy and miserable. Even one of the walks around Maverick was bad in the sun, because of the wind coming off the bay. I don't know how those guys can work in those conditions.

^Yeah, the Maverick tour was pretty brutal. It was worth it though. I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

I think it would be fun to take a tour and see what CP really looks like with a foot of snow... Sure its the same place, just under a bunch of fluffy stuff, but I think it would be pretty!

Its pretty for the first 5 minutes and then you want to get back in your car and head back to a warm office.

Wasn't it horribly cold during the WT tour too? Something about that lake wind!! BRRRR! :(

It's all about getting around the barrels, or over the fences, right leads, no faults, fastest time and looking pretty when done. What's so hard about that?

I'm sure you are all correct about it being a very cold place to be with that wind kicking off Lake Erie. I'm just a little jealous seeing all those who have got those off season tours and construction tours. I would just love to see Gemini the way it is pictures in the well known winter pic. I am willing to barter something to be included in the next construction tour, perhaps transportation for all or meals for the day?!? LOL. I know I'm reaching as many of you who get to go probably live in Ohio which is much closer than my location from Michigan. Name your price!

You also have to remember that getting a tour does not always guarantee a heavy snow fall at the park. You couldn't schedule a tour (not that you can anyway)around the weather. I have been there in December, January, and February but have only been there a couple of times with snow on the ground. Without snow its just a could, bland place that you don't want to be at.

I've been in the park a couple times in the winter. There's never been any snow when I was there though, just brutal cold. The wind coming off the lake and bay is miserable.

And then one day you find ten years have got behind you

Adam you sir suck. But seriously if you haven't seen what some people do to keep warm during their town's polar bear plunge its actually quite funny. My favorite is the one from White Bear Lake.

I think it would be cool to go on a tour during the winter. I know this past summer I had the chance to explore Geauga Lake for two days with the auction and it was cool! It was sad to know that the park was closed for good and being sold, but I thought it was so cool to be able to go everywhere in the park! Even in the buildings and places in the park that you never get to see! As for the weather, I live right by the lake so I am used to the mean winds the Lake Erie loves to blow my way! I would love to get some shots of my coasters in the winter!

Life is like a rollercoaster! It is full of ups and downs

too bad up here in Sandusky that the wind is so bad right now that the snow is all gone =(

I say they turn Millie in to a ski run. Put a track that would work for parabolic skies and hold on haha.

I for one have zero interest on going to CP in the winter. I was in the area last year in Feb for Kalahari and agree it is brutal.

I would suggest the Caribbean for anyone interested in a winter adventure. I just got back from my first cruise and loved it. I love CP and the lake, but even their summer cannot compete with the Caymans, Cozumel,Belize and Roatan Honduras in the winter. By the way, Roatan is great and was a big surprise.

If anyone is interested on some does and don’ts of cruising, please PM me. I would do a trip report, but since this is a CP site it is not the appropriate place. I did much research that saved me some major $ prior tothe cruise and have a few lessons learned also. I would be more than happy to share these with anyone.

Bill, I would be interested in your dos and don'ts. Are
they posted somewhere?

JPH

I am hoping to get this out over the weekend. I may post a trip report on “cruisecritics.com” and create highlights of my pictures for YouTube via Slideshow. However, many of the does and don’ts are general knowledge on there. I will create these and send you some links with references of the lessons learned via PM. Trust me, if you are looking to do a cruise; you should not be disappointed as long as you are good with my trip report. There are so many great cultures out there to discover and embrace beyond the US borders… Cruising helps with highlights to better introduce them, then read about them and come back and understand them (to a limit, no few trips can understand a culture that existed for centuries)
