Windseeker construction cam up!

Not as much as you'd think when using a 300+ foot lever.

Seems to me, with my non-engineering mind and all, that it would take some incredible forces to move 1,650-plus TONS of concrete enough to tip the whole structure over.

Yeah, as John notes, that structure acts as a massive lever on the base.

Just a question did anyone record the webcam today? Like have a time lapse?

I have images (every 2 minutes), but haven't yet put it into movie form. I'll post a link here when I get around to it.

Can you email me some from a time frame I was there?

First rollback on Dragster July 23 2003 since then 15

Cedar Point posted a video of some time lapse images on their Facebook page of the concrete pour.

Sure. As soon as you show us your proof that MF is being repainted. :)

^ That was the first thing that popped into my head when I read his post

^^I was just thinking the same thing. ;)

On the topic of the foundation being only 6 feet deep, I seem to remember something in the spiel on Space Spiral saying that its foundation was approximately 30 feet deep.
Windseeker and Space Needle are nearly the same height and shape so I really wonder what makes it different!

I'd also like to know what archaeologists in a couple thousand years will think when they find huge cylindrical footers 30 feet deep into the ground. ;)

Summer was made for a Cedar Point day~

If I had to guess, I'd say that Space Spiral's foundation is deeper because it was designed at a time when engineers didn't have the benefit of computer simulation, and as a result, tended to overbuild things.

In fact, Hoover Damn would look drastically different if it were to be constructed today, for that very reason.

Did anyone else think that there was another fire at the park this morning when they looked at the Windseeker cam? That snow looked like smoke. :)

4 summers of employment in ride operations does stuff to you.

I didn't think there was a fire. But, I agree it looked like smoke.

Forgive me if this has already been posted. But there's a Windseeker 2 cam now showing the view along the beach.

Boy, that new angle really shows how much they took out for the ride. Everything from the Coral Courtyard to the stadium is gone.

The "smoke" from the snow was possibly sublimation as the sun struck the top layer.

That struck me too, Ensign. A lot was cleared out for this ride. I was also surprised how far out the footprint sticks toward the water. Be interesting to see how they landscape this area when done. Are there any artist renderings?

Jason Hammond's avatar

I think it was just snow on the lens. It was inside the focal point and therefore out of focus.

^^No, there are no animations that show what the landscape might look like. That was one thing I was upset about when the ride info was released. I'm guessing just going to add brick pavers back there.

Let's Get Weird.

I am wondering why there are no guys out there working. Is it just the COLD and SNOWY Weather CP is getting or do they have a few weeks Break time?

JuggaLotus's avatar

The foundation was just poured last week. I would imagine there is some period of time (especially with the cold) that it needs to just sit in order to cure properly.

John is CORRECT. The concrete REQUIRES time to properly CURE in cold weather before it IS fully exposed to THE elements (or it may BREAK, freezing before reaching the APPROPRIATE strength).
