Because the entire event was about showing off the driving characteristics of Mercedes Benz vehicles to people who enjoy driving, it was a marketing event to sell vehicles. You can't market driving enjoyment when vehicles are driven by a computer.
Do you envision a dystopian future where non-autonomous vehicles are collected and disposed of? I don't. Just because they won't be allowed on public roads does not mean they won't be allowed to exist on private property.

I happen to have a perfect driving record...let all the people who can't be bothered to learn to drive well or read a map or put their damn phone down have their self driving cars in the cities I want open country roads away from everyone anyway. I should not be deprived of my enjoyment of cars just because others can't be trusted with them.
Holy hubris, Batman... Those most convinced of their perfection are the ones that are least aware that they're not perfect.
And as Go Intamin points out, you being a perfect human being is only relevant if you exist in a vacuum. You don't, so your perfection, while impressive, is irrelevant.

I didn't say I'm perfect, I said my driving record is. Maybe next week it won't be who knows...Not allowing anyone to drive their own car I think falls into the let's give things up because we can't accept any amount of risk camp and I find that scarier than the risk it's supposed to be freeing us from. When does your car start telling you whether or not you're allowed to go where you told it to? People are already plugging those snapshot things into their cars to monitor everywhere they go to get lower premiums when does it switch over to do it or we'll charge you more and with the self driving car eventually not let your car drive you places they've decided are high risk and you don't need to go? When does your health insurer get together with your car in insurance to not allow your car to stop at McDonald's because your cholesterol is too high? Or not allow you to drive to the park because it's a waste of gas and you've already been there 3 times this week? Or not allow your car to leave your driveway because your payment is 3 days late? Automatic everything may not be as awesome as it sounds.

You clearly have no concept of just how dangerous driving is, which I suppose should have been obvious given your previous comment. Driving presents enormous risk, hundreds or even thousands of times more risk than flying. And overwhelmingly the causes of accidents comes down to driver error.
As for the other doom & gloom nonsense, you're not the first (nor the last) to predict the End Times via such means. Accepting autonomous vehicles doesn't mean we cannot avoid the dystopian future you predict.
Brandon
My husband is a paramedic and I have had two cars of my own totaled due to the negligence of other people. I am well aware of how dangerous driving is. I still feel that it is completely reasonable for me to be able to drive my own car without the help of GPS to the store of my choice to buy tin foil in whatever brand I want to construct my hat totally winging it without a pattern.
I'm sure you'll be able to drive your own car indefinitely, and pay dearly for the privilege in insurance premiums.

When did I ever say anything like that? Matter of fact, I don't ever see driver operated vehicles being banned from public roads but the insurance companies will ream you for that privilege. What I said was that companies like Mercedes Benz won't do marketing events like the White Knuckle Weekend, which shows off the high performance characteristics of how drivers can drive their cars if the product they sell drives itself. Instead of marketing to drivers they will market things like infotainment systems for when you are sitting in the self driving car twiddling your thumbs thinking "I can do this faster and better."

Clearly so dangerous that 15 1/2 year olds can legally drive.

So, if they had raised the driving age to 18 Chik-Fil-A would still be at CP?

There's no law preventing that same 15 year old (or someone younger, for that matter) from carrying a gun in public, provided they're hunting or whatever. And I think we would agree that guns are pretty dangerous, right? So I wouldn't be so quick to suggest that because we allow kids to do it, it must be safe.
Brandon
Guns aren't dangerous at all, they just sit there.
Kitchen knives and broken bottles.... now those are dangerous.
And I wasn't suggesting anything, I was pointing out the ridiculousness of your post.
And I have to say I agree with you about 3/4 of the time, but your overreaching really hard on this.

Thanks for reinforcing my point :)
And to bring this back around topicish:
Chick-fil-a is statistically way less dangerous than Chipolte.

Same argument as guns, cars aren't dangerous, it is the people driving them that are.

The Smiler isn't dangerous, it's the operators that are... applies to virtually everything.
