What else is in Sandusky?

Midway Man, Plans for the Great Bear Lodge called to let people, who did not stay at the hotel, buy day passes. Along with groups to have outtings there. But the plans were dropped after how fast the place has taken off. The water park is pretty crowded just with registered guests, I can't imagine the chaos the place would be if they allowed no-guests to use the park. And trust me, you are not missing any thing by not going there.

Word is that another hotel/resort similar to the Great Bear Lodge, just 5x bigger, is on the drawing boards for the Sandusky area. Their is a small water park near Battery Park, but I do not know much about that place.

I can't belive any one hasn't mentioned it... the Merry-Go-Round museum, which is located about 5 minutes from the causeway. It has a working merry-go-round, countless horses, and many other neat things and the price to get in is not bad.

The waterpark by Battery Park is called "Surf's Up," and actually, all that is is a wave action pool.  In fact, it was Ohio's first wave action pool, an attribute the place is very proud of.  I actually enjoy going to Battery Park and just relaxing and enjoying the great view across the bay!

I'm not from Sandusky, but I go right through it on the way to the point after getting off of the turnpike...(I live downriver for those from around me...Not Taylor either... :) But it's about 15 minutes south of Detroit) I think that the city looks pretty interesting and believe me, I wish I lived in Sandusky so I could be near the point...Plus you guys have a Friendly's restaurant...We had one of those but they took it out about 6 or 7 years ago...I like going by it because it brings back memories for me....I know it's stupid but I think it's funny...I think Goofy Golf looks like fun and what's the best reason to visit Sandusky? Why Cedar Point of course....I wish I could have a season pass...I would be there everyday....almost..
One thing I wish Sandusky had was a Denny's. I would eat there every night... Denny's may make some nasty food at times, but the coffee is the best I've ever had (outside of a coffee shop).

My home town, Milan, Ohio, is the birthplace of Thomas Alva Edison and the museums there are top-notch regarding the subject of Thomas Edison and his numerous inventions.   It's just a short, 10-mile trip south on US 250 and take a left onto OH 113.  Milan is also the home of the Milan Melon Festival on Labor Day weekend which is the best place to find cantaulope flavored ice cream and a wide assortment of old classic flat rides (wave swinger, roll-o-plane, caterpillar, etc.) ...ok, not the most exciting, but it's something to do.

I agree with Nate on one thing where the heck is our Best Buy?I also agree about The Great Bear Lodge you are not mising much by not going there it is expensive. But we do now have a Cracker Barrel which has excellent food.
Raptor_Rider, you don't have to live in Ohio to take advantage of a season pass.  I live in the Plymouth area and have had season passes off and on for the past 8 years. Course, if you are too young to drive, that would be a problem.

Sports City going away!  I'm bummed!

While not in Sandusky, there is the Mad River and Nickleplate Rail Museum in Bellevue, about a dozen miles south of the park off of SR 4. Also, there's Seneca Caverns just a little further to the south. You can hit both in a day with time left over.

So there really is a Cracker Barrel in Sandusky now? That would be great! I also hope the rumor is true about the Old Navy and the Olive Garden it will give me three places to go on days off!

I would love to have season passes and I am old enough to drive it cause I'm 19, but it would put way to many miles on my car....plus the gas money would be outrageous...I would have a season pass if I knew I could make it all the time..but the 4 or 5 times I go each season, I don't have school or work that day which is rare...I take some summer classes as well at Eastern Michigan University, my school(GO EAGLES) so it makes it even harder for me get that free time...I know that season passes are open to anybody but I just don't think they would benefit me...I would end up spending more on gas money by the end of the year than I would for my season pass...Wow...That is really something to think about..

To help answer a couple of questions I've seen in this thread ...

The Cracker Barrel in Sandusky is now open, right in front of the mall.

Shooney's is closed ... there is a rumor of one of the restaurant owner's wanting to open up a Denny's on Rt. 250. That may be the spot open for consideration.

Sports City is leaving its current spot (I don't think it will be this year), but I've heard it may have a new home near the Lake Erie Factory Outlet Center.

A new water park resort similar to Great Bear was thought to be planned for the land across Cleveland Rd from TGI Friday's/Radisson. Then it was discovered that the company was looking at other cities besides Sandusky. So that's currently up in the air, last I heard.

I believe, as Hooper said, that Home Depot is a done deal. Old Navy has been rumored for a long time, so I suspect it's probably true. Olive Garden has also been rumored for the new development at the Rye Beach Road / Rt 2 interchange.

Gemini, yes, the plans to have the new resort are up in the air. But after talking with a few people, I think it will find home in Sandusky. If not, it won't be far from Sandusky(Put In Bay area). After all the new Sandusky mayor, is all for expanding the city. I think the meeting to decide on a spot is in the next weeks. We shall find out soon enough...

For those who don't know, what I am taking about... plans for a new resort include:

- Huge Indoor/Outdoor Water Park
- 18-Hole golf course
- Hotel

They were looking at land near the Radission, but buying never happened. They want to help turn Sandusky into the Wisconsin Dells.

Exactly Gemini, I heard sports city was going to go where Wolohan (SP) Lumber was real close to the factory outlet. Basically at the turnpike exit for Sandusky/Norwalk. Then I recently heard their just closing up shop. So well see I guess.  Also that third store rumored to come, that slipped my mind is a target.

Hey, I'll vote for Denny's.  It sounds like Sandusky might just be a really great place to be withing a few years. :)  New stores.  Maybe a mall renovation that is long overdue.

A lot of this improvement is or will be a result of the widening of 250 to 5 lanes all the way to the turnpike.  This will allow for heavier traffic volumes for that entire stretch instead of just to Bogart Road.

The family that owns Sports City, the Hoty's are bigwig developers in Sandusky.  The Hoty's are also responsible for the Outback Plaza as well as some of the other commercial developments in Sandusky.  Look for a few Marina/Retail developments from them in a few years, as well.  Lets hope for Milan Township's sake (due south of Perkins Twp. and Sandusky) that Sports City opens down at the old Wolohan's store...more tax revenue...etc. good things for the twp.

I have a season pass and I live in Florida!  I plan on spending 2 days at CP and at least 2 days at Dorney Park, so it was a better deal.
There is also a little mexican Resturaunt Called Casa Fiesta .I reccomend it.

"What's The Rush? There's Always 3 Hours Of Zoning Stuff To Go Through."

Margaritaville is great for Mexican too!
I don't know about margarettavilel but Casa Fiesta is very resonably priced.
