Approximately how many people live in Cedars? That's a lot of hotel rooms to find for the seasonal workers, many of whom are international and/or college kids and may not (all) have vehicles. This is becoming a major cost issue for CP. Some of my back of the envelope math (this is all just me spitballing):
Park might host 20k-40k on a given Saturday, and 10k-30k on a Sunday. Let's say 30k would have gone today and 20k tomorrow just as a guess. 50k total admissions x average entry fee of ~$50 = $2.5 Million. If each of the guests spends an average of $30 on meals, souvenirs, games, etc, that's another $1.5M. Evacuating 500? Cedars residents into 250 hotel rooms (roommates?) at $100 apiece is another 100 grand and the lost revenue at Breakers, Lighthouse, Express etc (surely they'll refund anyone even at Express where there is water if they leave given that the park is closed) means 500 hotel rooms/cabin rentals being refunded at ~100 bucks each x 2 nights is another 100 grand. These are just spur of the moment guesses but when you think of the revenue they're losing (no-one drinking at Friday's tonight, no ribs at Famous Dave's, no parking fees, etc), this could quickly become a $5 Million dollar hit IF they can get open on Monday. I heard last week on Skyhawk that the ride cost $6M, which shows how significant this water break is--it's a really good ride's worth of money lost. Ouch.
Perhaps they insure against such losses, but all that means is they've been paying this expense in drips and drabs over the years in the form of premiums. Any way you slice it, this is really bad for the park. Dang it.
I believe there are about 700 employees in Cedars, and I'm not sure where they're supposed to go. My friend (lives in Cedars) was told to find a friend somewhere to stay with.
Yes, it was closed during the Blackout in 2003 -- and handled pretty much identically to this weekend....

I would be really surprised if they can't get the park opened tomorrow. This does mean that I'm not sure where we're sleeping the next two nights.
At this time we have made the decision to keep the park and resort properties closed until Monday, June 9th when – subject to any unforeseen complications – we would anticipate resuming normal operations. As the repairs advance throughout the evening and into Sunday we will provide additional updates.

Well okay then.

Any estimates on the amount of money they're losing?
Cedar Point has insurance for incidents like this.

Not what I meant, Cedar Point closed mid-day when the black out occurred. I'm talking about closing the park for the entire day, like they did today and now for tomorrow.
I think Shoot The Rapids reopening had something to do with this. The sudden drain on the water main was just too much for it to handle.
Did management roll out the portable lockers for the water department workers to store their stuff while doing repairs?
From Tony,
@TonyClarkCP: The Coasting For Kids riding event for tomorrow has been cancelled. More info to come
No info from staff about the details of what was going on. We were told at 3pm we had to leave by a poor kid that barely spoke English. No emails sent, supervisors to answer questions etc... Crew digging and pumping out a hole just past the parking booths in the lot. Oh and a piece of what appeared to be about 24" diameter water main.... They could have gave us customers a little more info. Had we known we would have left for kings island at 10am and found a campsite down there.
On the positive side....
The filming of the sequel to the film "Percy Jackson Sea Of Monsters" is a definite GO for Saturday and Sunday nights!
The city of Sandusky sucks. Water mains have a predictable life span and the city should have replaced this water main before there was any chance of failure. I'm actually surprised there is not a redundant main serving the park.
What are they doing with the admission tax they are collecting? The first thing they should have done with the money is ensure that city utilities serving the park are in good condition. To risk a major failure like this to their cash cow and the only reason Sandusky is on the map is totally irresponsible. How much revenue is being lost, maybe 15 to 20 million dollars? And some in Sandusky want the admissions tax raised to 8%. To rely on only one very old water main to serve the park shows that the city is incompetent and not doing required maintenance. That main should have been replaced years ago.
Cedar Point should consider being annexed into Huron Township and giving Sandusky the raised middle finger.
I'd rather be in my boat with a drink on the rocks,
than in the drink with a boat on the rocks.

The city is at fault. If not for the point the city would not exhist. They have run public safety into the ground as well... All the taxes cedar fair pays into their coffers and this is what they get.
Sandusky's city engineer told Fox 8 News Cleveland, “We finally just figured out it’s an eight-foot crack in the bottom of the pipe, and the water is still coming in still, so they are having trouble keeping the trench dry at this point."
He also indicated the water main is old and has a history of breaks.
Pete - some of the commenters on the Register's website have the opposite view (surprise). :) They think this is another reason to raise the tax to 8% - to pay for repairs such as this.
I hope this doesn't cause a negative impact on Wednesday when I go.

What? Cedar Point goes away, they take Lake Erie with them? No doubt Cedar Point plays an important part in the local economy, but that's a ridiculous statement.
Ditto on Pete's comments. I often wondered the same thing, what is Sandusky doing with all the admission tax revenue? One of the city's main objectives should be to supply CP with the best utilities and services.
And don't forget the whole parking lot debacle last October. The city could've coordinated traffic better to get everyone out quicker.

its just not Sandusky. much of the USA has infrastructure that is outdated and should have been replaced yrs ago. the main problem is, no one wants to pay.
