I think you were right the first time. The top of the lift appears to be hanging from the crane now.

It still looks like there's an intended gap there. That transfer track section is very close to being aligned so there's no way it's simply moved over. There must be some kind of piece that fills the gap and holds the locking hardware to lock/unlock the track pieces together.

I too feel the same way. I'm not saying that there is a mathematical error, but more like a missing piece like you said.
IMO, I don't think the rest of vertical construction would have continued if there was any kind of error. It might be the angle, or it might be a removable track piece to get the trains on and off. Who knows.

Nah. Never underestimate the illusion perspective can create.

Maybe that was one of the surprises that CP didn't tell us?! It was going to have a crash at the end of the ride like in Rollercoaster Tycoon!
Winged Roller Coaster 1 has crashed!
I really don't think they made a mistake, but even if they did, it's better to have it happen now than just a couple weeks prior to opening for the season. *Cough * Maverick *Cough*
I believe that section of the track will have this feature that Diamondback has on it. A portion of the track expands and contracts so that there is not a noticeable gap where the transfer section starts and ends.
