Hey i worked the 2011 season and started recieving unemployment benefits this june
I guess I missed this part somehow. Did you work at CP in 2011, work elsewhere after, and then lose your job?

I worked at cp in 2011 and have been trying to find a job since. My area is rather difficult to find a job in so it takes time. Oh and just for the record for some of the ppl posting here, im not exactly happy about the idea of getting unemployment from a seasonal job but i need a way to pay bills till i find a job, everyone who has bills should get that. I dont expect to live on this its temporary so calling me shady is a low blow. But no to awnser your question i worked at cp and nothing after that. One of my past employers must be saying something about me that current ones dont like, which makes no sense cause i was a good employee to all of then i think.

So why aren't you working at Cedar Point now?
Why go back and work when your getting free money?
GO IRISH!!
I know people who work at Cedar Point all summer and sit on their butts all winter collecting unemployment. It is completely pathetic that people abuse a program that is meant to save people who are actually having a hard time finding work.
Why the hate? It's an interesting question. I loved working for CP. As far as I can tell they treated me better than Jesus and I'm a Christian. Collecting unemployment in the off season is standard for many countries and industries.
Employees consistently work 70+ hours a week and many 18 hour days… (8am to 2am) below minimum wage and without overtime pay because it's the entertainment industry, that was the reason I was given. Off season unemployment is entirely reasonable I think.
I think the problem is it's a great place to work and many people, as I did, will go without just to be part of it.
As an aside, back in the 1970's there were a large group of seasonals that worked at CP in the summer, and then after the two bonus weekends packed up and moved to Florida for the winter where the all had jobs at WDW. Come Spring the cycle reversed. I don't know how long this went on but from what I've read here it hasn't been done for a while.
Yeah if you don't make enough over the summer to support yourself year round it's time to find more jobs or a job that pays more. Why should someone who works (me, for example) have to support your bum ass for the winter while you don't work? I'm being punished for working.
I'd like to not work April-May-June. Will you support me those months so I can chase tornadoes without my pesky job getting in the way?
If it's hard to find a job in your area you simply do not want to work. I don't think there's very many places in this country you can go and not find work if you're willing to work. Walmart and McDonalds are almost always hiring. There are a lot of jobs out there if you're willing to move too. The oil industry is paying outrageous salaries to get people to work on rigs from North Dakota to Texas. North Dakota especially is insane with an unemployment rate of like 3% or less.
For some reason, I think if people started going hungry and didn't get money to pay for a smart phone they would find jobs.
Heh, interesting topic as I just went through this same thing last year.
I had a full time year-round job for six years and was laid off on the last day of August 2011. I applied for unemployment and came to work during HalloWeekends as a screamster. I was able to collect benefits during this time-frame, as the money that I made working weekends was less than my unemployment benefit. However, the money that I DID make at Cedar Point was deducted from the unemployment check that I received. I ended up being on unemployment until around the beginning of December, when I found other full-time work. Cedar Point ended up appealing my unemployment. The state had sent me a letter which I responded to, and the decision was made in my favor. Then there was a second appeal and I had to do the phone hearing where I explained the situation. Decision came out in my favor, and did not have to pay back benefits.
I know that they have made some changes to the rules in regards to seasonal employment, which I read through and did not completely understand, but the dates that I worked seasonally were before the changes took effect.
I do not feel I was abusing the system whatsoever, as I had been continually looking for work. I do feel there are also situations where people feel they can just work during the season and then take the rest of the year off and collect a check, which is absurd. Maybe the new changes to rules regarding seasonal employment will help put the brakes on this.
I planned on my benefits to be temporary only. Im having trouble finding work and my savings ran out in may and i have only been collecting since june. I know better than to abuse the right to benefits. I worked for a company 2 years ago that closed while i was there and i was on the unemployment benefits for only a few months and found work, the time frame was long due to moving back to ohio. So the ppl on here who think they need to put a random person down who just wants advice about this situation, please just stop posting here, thank you.

Any employee in good standing is offered a chance to apply the following season. If said person avoids this, you would be turning down a job offer of equal pay rate as your previous job (there). Which is against the rules when collecting unemployment. Thus, CP would win the appeal.
