Yeah some words of advice and a few tips for working at Turmpikes:
-ALWAYS have your rainsuit handy, there is NO refuge from pouring rain there (it sucks to be soaking wet for the rest of your shift), we are one of the last rides to go down for weather in the whole park and there will ALWAYS be those few diehards that will ride Turnpikes in the POURING RAIN!
-Work on your balance because the first few times pulling in those cars to the platform can be a little awkward and it is SO EMBARRASSING to fall off one of the cars in front of a big line of people.
-If you tan or burn easily make sure to bring plenty of suntan lotion because you WILL burn and/or get VERY tan since you will be in the sun pretty much the entire time you are working there.
-Get to know Davy, he is a 17 year old who will ride Turnpikes ALL DAY (him and his family gets season passes every year). One day he rode it for 2 HOURS STRAIGHT!!! We made him an honorary member of the Turnpike family last year.
-If you open Turpikes (which opens at 11:00), get used to the questions: "What time do you open?" "Are you gonna open soon?" "Is this ride closed?" never mind that there is a BRIGHT BLUE COLORED sign posted right out in the open that reads "This attraction opens at 11:00 am" and half the time when the guest asks that question you are STANDING RIGHT NEXT TO IT!
-Be nice to George (yeah so the Turnpike crew kinda named the stop sign last year)
-You'll never know what you will find underneath Raptors cobra roll aside from the MILLIONS of cell phones! Oh yeah and last year I DID find a flip-flop underneath there...seems as though that slipped through the watchful eyes of the well trained Raptor crew!
-ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS close the transfer track after you put on/take off a car. Imagine my surprise late last season as I was coming back from my break and I noticed that there were NO cars on the track and after closer inspection I noticed that there was no one even standing in line and Debra, OZ and Brian were ALL standing there next to my frightened ride prides (I felt like turning right back around and going in the opposite direction!). It seemed as though someone forgot to close the transfer track and a car ran into it and bent it which caused the ride to be down for about an hour while maintenence tried to bend it back.
-Everybody will ALWAYS ask for the red car because it is the fastest, which even if they do get they will catch up to the person in front of them right away and have to stop every little while but dont tell them that because they dont care.
-Make sure that if you have the keys to both the rides you GIVE THEM BACK BEFORE YOU LEAVE. There was a certain ride host who will remain nameless that ALWAYS took them with him when he left and would have to make a special trip ALL they way back to the park to give them back, one time he even caused Calypso to go down because he had the ride key in his pocket when he left in a hurry (probably had 151 on his mind).
-The Calypso music WILL grow on you. I do not know pretty much any spanish but I can sing you any one of those spanish songs from beginning to end. The Calypso music will also grow on the Blue Streak crew also seeing as there control booth entrance is facing towards Calypso. I can't say that I don't turn it up a little bit more so that they may partake in the enjoyment of such a musical delight...MUHAHAHA!!!
-There is nothing more relaxing after a long day of pulling up cars and working Calypso than to take a nice relaxing drive in one of the Turnpike cars after you close especially on a nice cool night.
I cant wait for another 151 fueled summer of friends, work, drama, rides, Taco Bell, crew parties and Louies!!!
*As one of our beloved Calypso songs says: "Dont worry, be happy" because the Cedar Point season is just around the corner.
