Tornado

There are two kinds of waterspouts - tornadic and those that occur doing fair weather. Tornadic waterspouts (like the one at CP in 98) occur less frequently than fair weather waterspouts. Both kinds pose threat to boaters, but usually not to those on land. I suspect that if it had come onshore, damage would have been limited to broken glass, side mirrors missing from cars, etc. Tornadic waterspouts look nasty, but don't carry the same punch as tornados. But that doesn't mean you want to mess with them (especially if glass is flying!).

The waterspout that occurred at CP is similar to the type described at http://www.srh.noaa.gov/mlb/spout.html . If you're really interested in this stuff, the page is a pretty good read.

hey where does everyone go when a tornado is near cedar point?
Greg
During '98, people went to the picnic pavilions.
I remember last year we had a big storm actually hit us around the 2-3 week of July....anyone from last year remember that when the tree hit the train. I was on the back of the other train coming into the back station when I saw water spouts from the back of the train as I was approaching back to my job since I was on a split. Then we did not go to shelter just stayed in the station back there...hehehe everyone else went somewhere...hehe
Does anyone have any pictures of the waterspouts?

Lol oh my like that is gonna help against a tornado lol....
One thing I do recall about the tornado of '77 was that it either damaged or destroyed the Frontier Town train station. I remember there was a period of time where you waited in line "out in the open" in a makeshift queue, because the station itself was gone.

Don't remember much else; was only 7.
Here's a pic of the spout of '98. Taken looking over the lift of Blue Streak

Don't remember where I cam across this pic..

It was last year in late July when i went to CP and it was not crowded at all! )probably since rain was in the forecast)But, about 1 o clock a huge rain storm hit and Iron Dragon, Magnum, Gemini were all stuck, but i cound only see those coasters. Anyways my friend and I got on Corkscrew and got stuck right before pea size hail started falling. Stuck for about 15-20 min. Storm was somewhat short and about 2:15 all rides where back up and it was a beautiful day from there on.

I remember that day.. I was in the line for Mantis when it hit.. but just short of the load station. So of course they wouldn't let us in.. We took the tops off some of the trash cans.. put them on the ground up against the monitor wall and stood under the overhang.

Why the trash can lids you ask??? Ever seen the drainage at that part of the line??? We ended up just jumping out and having a water fight till the ride opened again.

Lol Rob I was there that day the water fight! Not participating though lol eating my popcorn chicken watchin ya'll
I live in Kansas and tornadoes are a common thing around here. Heck we are supposed to have them today. No, we dont have them every day, and no, it is nothing like the Wizard of Oz. I had never seen a tornado in real life until I saw the water spouts in real life. I thought it was very cool because it was SILENT. There was not a sound in the air except the screaming people of course. Truly an awesome experience.

Yep that was me... I never understood people who run for cover when it starts to rain, but will wait in line for 40 mins to ride Thunder Canyon or Snake River Falls...

I was soaked to the BONE that day, but man did we have fun. I actually have stayed in contact with the group of people who stuck it out with me and enjoyed the fun. We're kinda hoping it happens again this year on a day we're all there.

Elephant Ear-

Don't you mean those coasters were closed.
I think ZONE34 had a whole web page on them with sweet pics, but that was a long while ago.
I would not want to be at Cedar Point in a massive storm, or a Tornado. CP dont have much cover, not enough to cover everyone in the park, there are a ton of object to blow around and you could really get hurt, if not by blowing objects, but by other people trampling over you trying to find cover. My family and I were at AstroWorld and one heck of a storm hit, people were scrambling everywhere, and employees were clueless as to what to do. Scary!
Well yes Brett, closed, but closed by being stuck, literally on their hills. They all stopped on the lift hill!

In 98 i was at school waiting for a bus to get back from CP. I heard on the news that there were 3 funnel clouds but they didnt say whether or not if they touched down but i heard from everyone that two had touched down. I guess i was lucky that i wasnt able to go on that trip.
HA HA Let's talk about not much cover. When your back in the Gemini area check out the 'shelters' for the Camp Snoopy Ride Ops. I remember all those storms and many more. I even remember a point when I was standing on my stool so that I didn't stand in the inch of water at the balloon race. I also remember the TL coming over and saying that if the phone rang once to run as fast as you can to the Camp Snoopy Theater. Yeah, they came back by and said run to the Theater we have a tornado warning. I've never run that fast in my life. :)
