Space Spiral Being Repainted?

I took a ride up to Battery Park today and noticed that Space Spiral looked a little different...

The only thing that I can think of is that it's being repainted. Anyone have any idea?

I agree. I thinks it's getting repainted....but the same color.
By the looks of those pics, I think it was sandblasted...or something.

Yeah, I think they must have sandblasted it or something. What surprised me was that it appears to be red underneath, of course maybe that's just the steel.

Actually, I could kind of see that happening...

Now if they repaint Space Spiral a nicer color, there's only one more thing that needs to be done to that midway. DT comes to mind.

Id like to see Space Spiral get a new color scheme. I like the tower being white, but maybe add some other colors to it. Make some cool designs/shapes with other colors. Something to make it a little less boring. I’m not talking hot pink though.

Id also like to see the bottom 30 feet of the tower wrapped in LCD’s. Like the NASDAQ building in New York. I think that would look good in that area.

Just please don't make it look like Knott's tower. Ugh.

I do like the LCD screen idea, though. That would be nifty.

Was there a recent wind storm? (ie. the sand from the beach hit it, lol)

That sand would have to be going atleast 3x faster then that windstorm could have produced.

I'm sure that the red you see on the tower is just the rust that is under that paint they blasted off. I would have liked to see how they would go about sandblasting a structure like that. Hopefully the blog will have some pics sometime soon.

Official word is that Space Spiral is being painted this spring.

Lets just hope its not going to look like a candycane (48" height stick).:)

Maybe they're renaming the Space Spiral "Maverick"
