Sky ride needs to be longer

RideMan,

If I remember correctly, the Frontier Lift was gone the season before Iron Dragon was constructed. That is to say, we had one year at the Point with the old Western Cruise still operating but the Frontier Lift gone.

I remember opening day that year clearly, because I was in the Season Pass Center getting my pass, and I looked at the park map and said, "Hey--where's the Frontier Lift?" The reason the attendant gave at the time was that it had been taken down due to wind: "That ride was always down due to wind conditions." I'm sure that's what she thought at the time.

The next year, they broke my heart, as the Western Cruise was gone and the Tin Lizard was in its place. And thus began the decline of the lagoons.

Again, all for progress, I suppose.
Well, maybe we all have ridden too many coasters too many times which has caused faulty memories. However, don't we agree the frontier lift was, during it's era a very good ride for a non thrill ride.
I have a poster map of Cedar Point from the 1982 season hanging on my wall. The Frontier Lift station on the Main Midway was located next to Paddle Wheel Cafe. But Paddle Wheel Cafe was torn down to make room for Coasters restaurant. Also on my map it shows the Monster located to the left of the Frontier Lift station, and then the Western Cruise docks. The Western Cruise was located where the Iron Dragon Station currently stands. Now here's something to thing about. If you got on the Frontier Lift in Frontier Town, and you rode it to the Main Midway that's a straight shot. But if according to CP4ever he's saying that the Iron Dragon station is the old Frontier Lift Station. Now if you got on the Frontier Lift in Frontier town the layout of the Frontier Lift would have had to have been in the shape of an "L" in order for the station to be the current Iron Dragon Station. Now would that make any sense to go over the island and then turn to the right. Just think about some of these things do they really make sense.

CP4ever. OTT is right! And judging by when he worked there, and his knowledge, he knows just a little bit more than you.

Mantis's location wasn't used until it was built. All it was, was a tree and marsh infested area that bordered the Paddle Wheel Excursions route.

What I don't get is that it took 12 years to change the Paddle Wheel Cafe! In 1987, Iron Dragon was built, cutting off the Paddle Wheel ride half way, and not even coming near the cafe. Then finally in 1999 they changed it to Coasters. Why did it take so long for them to change it?

Good question, CP_bound -- especially since while I was working the Iron Dragon, I got sick of explaining to guests where the station for the boats was -- they were all getting lost looking for it!

Matt, the Frontier Lift was a straight shot from Frontier Town to the Million Dollar Midway. Maybe the map you have isn't totally accurate. The station on the Midway was more in the location of the Iron Dragon queue than where the Iron Dragon station is. That’s a straight shot across the island to the Frontier Town station. For technical reasons, cable lifts only go in straight lines, unless they have a intermediate bullwheel to change the direction of the cable. The Frontier Lift had no such thing, therefore it was only possible to build it in a straight line.
Pete, I was trying to explain that it had to be a straight shot. I was saying that it wouldn't work if the ride was in the shape of an "L". On my map it's a straight shot. I just said that so that CP4ever would have to think if it actually made sense, because he was saying that the Main Midway station for the Frontier Lift was the Iron Dragon station. But he is wrong.

Here is a satalite overhead taken from multiple images on Microsoft's Terraserver, and put together with Adobe Photoshop, with a line showing where the frontier lift may have been. The black lines show the best possibility for the old lift with the black dots showing possibilities for the towers and the black splotch showing the station at one end.

Just so you know, this image is available through this link only, and not through any page on my site.
