Six Flags Magic Mountain stealing roller coaster capital title from Cedar Point?

ThunderbirdsMT's avatar

Six Flags Magic Mountain in California is opening 2 roller coasters for its 2011 season bringing thier total number of coasters to 18. Do you think Cedar Point will fight for the title in 2012 or will SFMM keep the title for years to come?

Yep looks like it, 18 coasters.

Quality > Quantity, as far as I'm concerned. Cedar Point has enough variety that I wouldn't mind not seeing them add another coaster for another year or two.

The only type(s) of Rollercoasters they don't have, but need is a Flying Coaster, X Dimension, and Zac Spin.

Suddenly my Cedar Point experience has become lessened and tarnished because some park across the country built more coasters!!!!!!!!! CEDAR POINT I DEMAND YOU BUILD MORE TO MAKE ME FEEL BETTER.

I'd like to see a dive. But before I go further, allow me to admit I've never been on one. They just look like they'd be a lot of fun, based upon pictures and POV's.

I was on my first drive coaster at Bush Gardens Tampa and aside of MF first hill Shreika would come in second for the greatest first drop

Ok, CP's location/experience/feel will always be great for me when I go there. I will prob never go to that six flags anyway, and they dont have a windseeker. I dont need x dimensions, etc, all that to feel better at a park. :) six flags won't ever beat CP's location either.

Amen. How many other parks can claim a view like the Point's, especially during sundown?

The lake makes for a great setting, and there are just enough towering tracks and contraptions to give it that "awesome" and exciting view when driving up the Causeway or sitting [briefly] at the top of TTD.

+1 Waffles. You have described the key ingredient to why CP has been a vacation destination for well over a hundred years. I've been to SFMM and the setting doesn't begin to compare (but it does have some awesome coasters).

Although it seems like a disadvantage, I've found the setting of CP really makes it seem like they did all they could to "pack in" the coasters. From wherever you are in the park, you can usually see a couple. This isn't the case at many other parks. The fact that they were able to fit 17 coasters on a small peninsula is pretty impressive, and it looks awesome when coming over the causeway.

I disagree.

X2 and tatsu and several other coasters were a blast. The last time I was at magic mountain, I had more fun than I have had at cedarpoint in years.

what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard.
Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it.
I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

^Two things. Firstly, I have no doubts that SFMM has a few good coasters everyone gets lucky one and a while ;) but Terminator: Salvation or whatever it's called now is another coaster that you forgot to mention. Out of 18, I'd reasonably expect at least 5 great coasters.

The other thing, and I'm sure others can agree with me, is because we (meaning season pass holding enthusiasts) are at CP so often, it really does become mundane and even boring at times. Whenever you frequent an establishment, no matter what establishment it is, it gets boring after a while. Your experience at SFMM had a "fresh" feel to it because it was new and exciting. However I'd be willing to bet that your experience would not be the same on your 5th, 6th, 7th, or later visit. CP has the same feel, and most of us are bored by September, which is part of the reason why Halloweekends is so popular; it's a "fresh" change.

About the only coaster Cedar Point is missing is a top 40 wood coaster. They have so many top 10 steel coasters, it would be nice to have a good wood coaster. (Blue Streak was 47 in the last Golden Ticket, and 71 in Mitch's poll)

As far as Six Flags, about the only impact that losing the Coaster Capital title is that it will make the job of the marketing department a little more difficult. Marketing "more coasters than anywhere else" has to be easier than many others. (Keep in mind this is the marketing department that gave us "fun and only" ;))

Exactly, CP arguably has the most spectacular location of any amusment park anywhere in the world.

One of the most spectacular views of CP has to be from a boat at night. I've been on the lake many times at night, returning from somewhere back to CP. At first you see a little bit of a glow, then the lights from the park slowly take form. As you make the turn into Sandusky Bay by Lighthouse Point, on a calm night you can see the lights of the rides reflecting on the water. You can feel the energy of the park as you make headway to the marina and you realize your boat is no longer an isolated island in the night. As you proceed to the slip, you feel content to spend the night at one of the happiest places around.

I agree that X (it wasn't converted to X2 yet when I rode it) was definitely a great coaster. Its has one of, if not the best first drops of any of the coasters at CP (or any other park I have been to for that matter). Tatsu was great too. At the same time, I imagine that the newness factor played a large part in it too. If you went to Magic Mountain as often as you went to CP, even those rides probably wouldn't seem as spectacular as they do the first few times you ride them.

I read this after writing my above response, and I believe you hit the nail on the head.

Let's review: Most people in the Midwest haven't heard of Magic Mountain, and don't care. Most of the people in SoCal haven't heard of Cedar Point, and don't care.
