Should Pipe Scream/Other Disk'O Coasters Be Considered True "Coasters"?

The fact that the question needs asked should give you an answer.

There's only 2 things that are considered "coasters". 1. A ride that consists of a lift hill or powered launch, after which point, it is driven strictly by gravity. 2. A small pad you put your drink on to keep condensation rings from forming on the table.

I'm sure Cedar Fair management is quaking in fear at being laughed at by America's coaster enthusiast community. Some members of the general public will look at it and say coaster. Others won't.

Good point! Its like the general public thinking Gemini is a wooden coaster, it doesn't really matter.

^^I suggest a collective laughing, followed by pointing, at Coastermania next year. That'll show em who the fools are regarding this new coaster......ride......thing.

So, is Wicked Twister not a coaster because it is powered every time it goes through the station?

Does it really matter if Pipe Scream is or is not a coaster as long as it is fun?

Would Pipe Scream be more fun if it was labeled a coaster?

This debate is pointless in my opinion and is an example of why coaster enthusiasts can be somewhat anal at times.

I'd rather be in my boat with a drink on the rocks,
than in the drink with a boat on the rocks.

Studies have shown that an acknowledgement of coaster status heightens responses from the Limbic section of the brain in lab mice. However, tests with coaster enthusiasts/humans have come up with inconclusive results.

Corkscrew, Power Tower, Magnum, & Monster/ Witches Wheel Crew 2011

Looks like it is being counted as a coaster. The ride is now up on the website under the "Roller Coasters" category-

EDIT: It is also, however, listed under "Family Rides"

I suppose if Wicked Twister is a coaster Pipe Scream can be a coaster. They both go back and forth. At least Pipe Scream has a hill.

Pipe Scream is also listed under Family Rides

Pipe Scream isn't a train or car on a track, it's just different. I don't know but I don't think it should count. And honestly, it is kind of hard to call Wicked Twister a coaster but then again, I remember Screamin Demon at Kings Island with kind of the same back and forth premise. It's listed under family rides at Kings Island; however, all their coasters are listed under thrill rides.

So I guess our questions are answered.

“With a collection of 72 rides, including 17 roller coasters, three kids’ areas, live shows, unique and interesting places to eat and spend the night, Cedar Point offers something fun for everyone.”

Just because the park calls it a coaster doesn't mean it's true. It's simply their opinion.

After all, they also call themselves "The Best Amusement Park in the World", which is obviously also purely subjective.

Brandon

Seriously?

That logic is seriously flawed. That's likes saying people only drive automobiles if it is their opinion that they drive an automobile.

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/roller%20coaster

According to Webster:

ROLLER COASTER: a ride at an amusement park which is like a small, open train with tracks that are high off the ground and that have sharp curves and steep hills.

djDaemon's avatar

Well then by that definition, Pipe Scream is most certainly not a coaster, considering the lack of train, sharp curves and track "high off the ground".

See? It's all rather subjective, even (or perhaps even especially) when you try to bring definitions into the argument.

Brandon

Does this make Wicked Twister a "Drop Tower(s)"?

djDaemon's avatar

It definitely fits far more closely with Webster's definition.

Using that definition, what is high off the ground? 10 feet, 20 feet, 80 feet? It's a pretty arbitrary and subjective definition (which makes it pretty much the exact opposite of a definition).
