Does anybody think that the boats might be getting worked on like the other ride vehicle cars around the park? What I mean is do you think they take these boats apart and inspect them too? This might help with their investigation.
They are subjected to winter maintenance, just like any other ride vehicle. This case may be different depending on what is being done to STR. If the malfunction was the boats, then they'll either be getting new ones or retrofitting the existing ones.

And to answer your question, a Dragster train weighs around 5 1/2 tons without people. That makes each car around 1 ton individually. I bet one dragster car weighs more than 1 STR boat. :P
See! Thats the thing! I had no trouble lifting the Dragster train ;)
"The Real Maverick" OOHHH Ok! Well the last time I was there I think someone put a Zero behind the 2 with magic marker. =P

As a point of reference, I have a boat that is 30' in length overall that with engine, drive, electronics, cabin and deck furnishings, etc. weighs about 4.25 tons. I'd guess a Shoot the Rapids boat weighs about 1/2 ton.
I'd rather be in my boat with a drink on the rocks,
than in the drink with a boat on the rocks.
Yeah, see I could probs lift that. ;)
Thanks for the point of reference Pete. She sounds like a beautiful boat!
My friends and I have a life goal to take a boat of such nature from Detroit to Cedar Point one day.

That will be a nice trip for you, I've taken the boat from CP to Detroit. That happens infrequently though, when going in that direction usually the boat just stops at Put-In-Bay like it has a mind of its own! :)

lol dude thats awesome! sounds like crazy fun! I love being on the water!

I don't know, those boats are pretty heavy. I tried to lift on once and I couldn't. But like I said I'm not a Scholar.
Yeah it is pretty tough to get over the 19 ton lifting hump. Stay in the gym and you'll get there soon.
Scholars have such an advantage, always lifting those heavy books. An STR boat is like lifting a feather for them.
(sorry, couldn't help myself) ;)

If you would have disconnected the boat from the track it would be easier to lift. I'd say they only weigh 80 pounds tops. Problem with lifting them i that unless you have employee access you can only try to lift the boats out of the water when the are on the tracks in the station.

The Scholar joke is a Jontron quote. Am I really the only Jontron fan here?

You must work there. The only way you could possess this info is if you had that kind of access. So how much do the trains weigh?
They must be busy working on Shoot the Rapids still. I tried e-mailing them, but no response came from them yet. I just hope something is mentioned soon. I keep having dreams about it every now and then.
This year in offseason id expect them to touch shoot the rapids a little try to get it running again it doesn't use up any valuable space and it is one of the only water rides so ill expect them to work on it hard in April; and May.

http://newsplusnotes.blogspot.com/2014/01/portaventura-announces-ne...r.html?m=1 for the love of God! Please convert STR into something truly family friendly like a RiVeR Battle ride. Shouldn't be that hard.
^^ It would be nice if they'd convert it to something, that's for sure, although my kids are finally tall enough, I still propose family friendly for at least one of their water rides. I still say a themed enclosure on part of the ride would be really cool and attractive to families as well.

All this complaining about Shoot the Rapids, seriously. It may not be the greatest flume out there, but I'm of the opinion the water rides at Cedar Point have always been rather so-so. Anyone here ever ride the original STR? It was mainly a snooze. The troughs went along the ground and the water moved the boats at a snail's pace. The drops were small, and even though it gave the appearance of a double down there was a small lift between em. Not a far cry from the one we know today, and who knows? Maybe that was the idea.
When I see innovative and exciting water rides at places like Disney, Universal, Knott's, and even Dollywood I don't feel bad about skipping the rides at Cedar Point. I've never ridden STR and can't think of an occasion where I might like to, and don't care. I'm very sure the ride will open once again this year and the line will be as long as usual. There's plenty of folks who, apparently, think it's just fine. Cedar Point built it and operates it for what it is- all this calling to replace it or redo it is ridiculous.
As for the accident, (potentially deadly or not), we can rest assured that proper steps were and are being taken, starting with the closure for the rest of that season, and ending with the park and manufacturer working together to insure this type of incident won't reoccur. They each have reputations at stake and insurance companies to satisfy, and you can bet they're taking the situation very seriously. It's not a matter of how big a deal it was, it shouldn't have occurred in the first place and shouldn't again.
Btw, as I was reading through here, the notion of each boat weighing 40,000 lbs. made me laugh out loud.

Very well said dude! In my opinion, Shoot the rapids is the best water ride at Cedar Point! I'm happy that Jason McClure announced that it will be open for the 2014 season. Sounds like by Memorial Day! Awesome News!
