It’s just a spiel that is said at all Skycoasters, it has nothing to do with the filming. It’s recommended to wait until they say “Fly”. That is what they instruct you to do. Some people do pull it early, it just gives you a shorter ride time. I like the view from up there so I take as much time as allowed.
I am in the same boat with you Mr Scott. I love coasters, but something about freefall scares the begeezes out of me. I rode coasters all day at CP last time I was there, but Demon Drop was probably the most freaky ride I did that day. My girlfriend is trying to talk me into doing Ripcord at Worlds of Fun. I may have to be heavily coaxed into doing that. I said the same thing about coasters til I rode one.
R.I.P. Mr Scott--I hope you find your lifthill to heaven.
First roller coaster ride was 1999. I had no clue what I was missing.
I disagree. Until the slack in the cable catches up to where its hooked onto your harness, you are truly free falling. It might only be a few seconds, but the sensation is scary, like just falling off a cliff scary. :) Not being strapped into a ride or a coaster train amplifies that feeling.

Ripcord scares me and that's why I like it. Skydiving was so surreal I still find it hard to believe I did it.
I know what you mean. I only had 13 student jumps, all the way back in 1989, but 'surreal' truly describes both the experience and the memory. It's like it was another person who did it.
Did you jump static line solo? I didn't want to go tandem with the instructor, even though it would have meant much longer freefall. It took twelve jumps just to get 3 PRCPs in a row under my belt. #13 was my first real ripcord pull. Also my first and only jump that I landed on my feet.
That being said, Ripcord and all the others of their ilk aren't terribly scary. The main element is the anticipation as you're getting winched up. In that sense it's really no different than a regular roller coaster. The freefall itself is so brief, it's not qualitatively worse than Power Tower, IMO.
