restraints

Having just seen pictures of cars am suddenly terrified! They have MF style restraints???????? (Please say I imagined this!!!!!) What happened to over the hear restraints like raptor, WT etc??? You face the ground for a bit, with just a lap bar (I know it's secure, but the ride sorta scares me already!) holding you in?Hm... Poeple will have to ride with me the first time!!!

Yup - they really do have lap bars! But they should still hold you securely in place - they're shaped differently to hug the legs more, the seats are deeper, and the downward twist is designed so centrifugal force will keep you in your seat.

Louise: Yup, Dragster has lap bars, presumably the same hydraulic mechanism used on Millennium Force and Wicked Twister. There's a diagram over on Virtual Midway that explains how they work. :) I, for one, have no problem with that, and in fact will be quite happy when all roller coaster shoulder bars go the way of the Dip-Lo-Docus...

Those style of lapbars can keep you safely in your seat while going through S:ROS bunny hills so I'm sure there won't be a problem riding TTD with them. And Kevin makes a good point, the drop is designed so the forces will push you toward your seat, not away from them.

I freaked out the first time I was in line for a coaster (with a loop mind you) and suddenly noticed as I was about to step in, that there was no over-the-shoulder restraints.

It really is ok. It is kinda freaky because of the openness you feel. They wouldn't have them like that if they weren't safe. The ride will be mortifying either way, don't worry ;)

SOB at King's Island has a good sized loop with only lap bars, it's fine.

Cedar Point is closed for the season. Reason? Freezin!

If I had the choice to ride a looping coaster or a hyper without a restraint of any kind, I would choose the looper. At first you might think that would be stupid. It's a popular misconception that being upsidedown means negitive G's. [negitive g's are what will cause you to fly out of your seat] Looping coasters usually don't give much negitive or zero g's while hypers are designed to throw you out of your seat many times.

With lapbar safety, it is posible for someone to fly out of the car while the restraints are secure. Take this picture for example. The two people I want you to look at is the black guy in the front row and the woman behind them. [note: I'm not trying to offend anyone, but proving a point] There are two things to look at in particular: The position of the lapbar and the rider's femurs [femurs are the bone between the hip and the knee].

-The black guy. He is the ideal rider. His femurs are long and angled upwards but more importanly the lapbar is very close to his hip The only way he could come out of the seat while the lapbar is in that position is if negitive G's were so high that it would rip tendons and ligements in his spine. That could easily takes thousands or even tens of thousands of G's.

The woman. She appears to be adequatly restrained. Not ideal but ok. Her femurs are short and it almost looks like there pointed down, also her legs are large. If you look at the lapbar, it's somewhat more forward than the black guy's.

The perilous plunge incident happend because a large woman, probably restrained in a worse way than the woman in the picture, rode. I believe that she had her arms up and she was twisted around taking to the people behind her as the train went over the hill. Her femurs were straigth to her back causeing her to come completely out of the car. The G's pulled on perilous plunge are a sudden burst of high negitive g's.

If your holding on and facing forward, I guarantee you will return to the station safely no matter what the ride or restraints.

Where did you see a picture of the trains? I want to see one.

What is the perilous plunge incident?
Did someone like the woman in the picture fall out or somehting?
Is the perlious plunge the water ride where the women fell out and died so they took the ride down?

The way I put it six flags needs more parks to keep up with the one and only cp :)

Hey brennan, check out the TTD web page, they have computer renderings of the trains from 3 different angles, and they also have several pictures of the actual trains when they arrived and when they were put onto the transfer track a few days back.

Enjoy your ride on the Big Bad Bug

Here are pictures of the actual trains.

They are in the pictures from March 12 and January 20. Here are the drawings of the train:

I don't know the full story of the perilous plunge accident but I do know that a woman was too large for the restraints and was ejected out of the ride and fell to her death. Perious Plunge is still there but it now has more restraints.

That woman in the picture of Xcellerator is kinda large (not trying to be mean, just trying to make a point) which kinda puts my mind at ease. Maybe this ride won't be too worrisome for those in fear of being tossed due to size.

Not having an overhead restraint makes the ride all the more exciting (I am sure most would agree)! Having a lapbar and seatbelt are all that you really need to feel secure.

The perilous plunge incident happened about 2 years ago. From newspaper resources during the time of the accident, the lady barely had the lapbar on her waist, and her gut, was completely over the lapbar. When you go over the drop on perilous plunge, you shoot out of your seat as it is...not only was the lady looking back behind her while the train went over the drop, but she wasnt holding on as well. When the boat went over the drop, she flew out, and landed in the water below to her death.

Lap restraints are more than sufficient to holding anyone in the ride, the way they, and the body is designed, it is impossible to come out unless you are not restrained properly, or if your upper torso was to detach from you lower body.

Personally, i trust them more than over the shoulder restaints alone.
