This just leads me to believe this ride will not be as large as many people are expecting. Why over-hype something just to let the general public down? Cedar Point managed to set such high expectations for everything they build, they almost painted themselves in a corner. My guess is their goal with this ride is to build something that not only has a few one-of-a-kind elements, but also finds a place in the top 10 ranked coasters. That way they could advertise this as the only .... coaster.
Although Magnum is far from being unique in height today, it still manages to remain in the top ten rankings. Records are pretty short-lived these days. Great rides have a lasting impact.
I doubt if it's a record-breaking ride in terms of height, speed or length. We have to wait for the announcement, obviously, to find out if it's meant to be a record-breaker.
Walt: Doesn't Cedar Point hold the record anyhow for most coasters in one park? And the most rides overall?
If so, then this coaster will break their own record for those things.
"THE Top Thrill Dragster...THE Millennium Force...THE Wicked Twister...THE Magnum! How do you like those apples?!?!?"
Six Flags Magic Mountain has the coaster record with 17 (although one is SBNO).
I think they also have the most rides (or are tied with CP).

This past weekend I spent a couple hours with a "non-enthusiast" whose parents live in Sandusky.
I was pretty surprised to heard this guy (in his mid thirties and well educated) declare that the new ride was going over 500ft and would go out into Lake Erie.
He said that is consensus in Sandusky. I just shook my head.....
If the general public is only hearing that type of nonsense, they're going to be disappointed, regardless.
Platinum has it's perks. So does living exactly 97.5 miles from King's Island and Cedar Point

Early construction in full view...
Are they supposed to cover it with a tarp? Spray everything down with top secret invisible spray?
...we are, after all, a pack of rabid wolves...
The key word in that statement is WE. We are speculating. We are interested. We check the webcam. We read the blog. We are the ones speculating. Not the casual observer, other than perhaps a passive interest they may have as they walk by the site or take a ride on the train.
I know it's a shocker, but companies sometimes actually build fences all the way around their construction sites. Even ones a little bit taller than six feet. Although personally I prefer your basic cloaking device...
Point well taken about this we business. You're right. It's not like there are more than five or ten people who read this site, right? And that there aren't, what, a dozen sites specifically devoted to CP, among hundreds or thousands about amusement parks. In fact, is anybody out there? I feel like I'm talking in a vacuum. Don't worry, I'll turn out the lights on they way out!
dj, I don't know why you have to disagree with me. Obviously you must not like me or something. ;) *chuckles maliciously*.

If this thing breaks any records at all, the only record is for the longest steel coaster and I don't think much of that, but it could be the longest coaster ever (Out of Steel and Wood). Both of these ideas, I highly doubt. I guess well just have to see and wait what happens. Even if it is not a record braker, im sure it will be an awesome coaster and completly diff. from what cedar point has right now.
Those are my thoughts.

why are you guys so goofy sometimes? there wasnt any more hype with TTD at this same time of the year. This rollercoaster is far more advanced than any other ride has been at this time. how can you say you dont think this ride is going to be very big just because there isnt huge hype on a national scale. wake up! you are clueless dude
RTurbo,
What if this ride does turn out to be 500 feet? Wouldn't that be crazy?
I still wonder why that worker told us that CP was going to get a new coaster for 2007 that's going to be 500 feet; but we (my friends and I) didn't know that anything was getting built until this past June.

Ensign, lets look at what you're saying.
Ok, so the General Public (that's everyone who doesn't work for a park, in the country) comes out to about 250 million, give or take. The members of ALL those websites (including the crappy ones -sites, not members- and not counting duplicate members) - I'll be generous, 1 million. So of all the park sites in the country, we've got .4 percent of the population. Ok, lets snag just the CP group, now we're looking at 100,000 if we're lucky.
So the CP portion is .04% of the population. There really is no one else out there, not the mainstream media, not the average Joe. Its US and members of other sites like this one that are generating this so called hype.
Why pay to build a fence in an area that is closed to pedestrian traffic anyway? If someone is dumb enough to jump off a moving train, they've already violated rules that would exempt Cedar Point from any harm that could come inside the construction zone.

Little Leslie, the bit about going into Lake Erie was just too much for me.
500ft - I'm not saying its impossible, just highly improbable.
I enjoy MF and Magnum a lot more than TTD, so I guess height isnt that important to me. I am very thrilled to see another looper, I do not care for Mantis, but I like Raptor.

I love Raptor, and I don't care for Mantis either. That one makes me feel like I lost a fight, too. I agree with your take on the 500- foot idea. Improbable for 2007, but not impossible for the near future.
I enjoy those two as well, more than the TTD. I get on the TTD when it's about a 20-minute wait. Other than that, I love the Magnum & MF.

Is it that obvious? ;)
In response to relevant stuff, see John's post above. :)
Well, there can't be any other reason! ;)
Jugga, you and dj mount an exceptional argument. I yield before your logic.
But whether or not there is a hoopla, a 'stir', a 'to-do' - call it what you will - amongst the GP, it sure seems like CP is trying their hardest to entice we enthusiasts and enthusiasses. :)
