"Record" Breaking?

vwhoward's avatar

I know that many of us are realistic about the fact that this coaster probably won't be 500 foot tall reaching speeds of 150 mph, but don't count out record breaking...consider this:

Many of its roller coasters were record setters when they opened. The Blue Streak, a wooden coaster and the oldest still operating at the park opened in 1964, having given over 54 million rides in its history. The Cedar Creek Mine Ride opened in 1969 as one of the very first run-away mine train style roller coasters, and one of the first steel coasters. In 1976, Corkscrew was the first roller coaster to turn its riders upside down three times. In 1978 Gemini debuted as the tallest, fastest, and steepest roller coaster on earth. In 1985, Disastor Transport opened as Avalanche Run Bobsleds as the tallest and fastest bobsled coaster and to this day remains the fsatest. In 1989 Magnum XL 200, designed by Arrow Dynamics, opened as the tallest, fastest, and steepest roller coaster in existence, as well as being the first full-circuit roller coaster to be taller than 200 feet (60 m). In 1991, Mean Streak opened as the tallest and fastest wooden coaster.

Raptor, designed by Bolliger & Mabillard, opened in 1994 as the tallest, fastest, and longest inverted roller coaster with the most inverting elements. Mantis, also designed by Bolliger & Mabillard, opened in 1996 as the tallest, fastest, and longest stand-up roller coaster with the most inversions. In 2000, Cedar Point and Intamin AG unleashed Millennium Force, which at the time was the world's tallest and fastest roller coaster and the first coaster to top 300 feet (90 m) in height. Millennium Force is still consistently voted the top coaster in the world. In 2002, Cedar Point announced Wicked Twister, the world's tallest, fastest and first double-spiraling impulse coaster. Cedar Point continued its record breaking tradition in 2003 with the world's tallest and fastest rollercoaster, Top Thrill Dragster, also designed by Intamin AG, which features a four-second launch to 120 mph (190 km/h) and a 420 foot (128 m) hill with a 90 degree spiral vertical ascent and a 270 degree spiral on the vertical descent. To date, Cedar Point has more roller coasters over 200 feet tall (4) than any other park in the world. Because of the number and quality of roller coasters, Cedar Point is often billed as "The Roller Coaster Capital of the World." - Wikipedia

Out of the 16 coasters they have, two are kiddie coasters never getting the chance to break records, so we can't count them in this record breaking business, and the Wildcat is a 27 year old portable, and I'm not sure if the Blue Streak broke any records, which leaves the Iron Dragon, while not breaking any records, was revolutionary at the very least. This leaves 11 out 14 coasters(not counting the Kiddies) that changed the way we looked at coasters. I'd say the odds are definitely in "record" favor.

I also forgot to mention that Skyhawk is the largest swing ride in the world

Eat 'em up, Tigers, eat 'em up!

Ooh. You're gonna get it.

Good luck. :-)

You can bet CP will find a record in anything they build. This new coaster will too.

101 on Magnum and counting...

^I've seen it before, but I don't care. I really couldn't find a good forum to put this in...they usually have only a couple of pages of good posts then just off on a tangent. Thanks for your support though, LL.

I agree. A lot of people say "you could have posted this in one of however many forums", but go back through 90% of them and see which ones actually stay on topic. Granted I don't believe this needed to be a new thread because no one is discounting that it will not break a record, I think the only one that has been dismissed is that it will not break the height record or be 500 feet tall.

First roller coaster ride was 1999. I had no clue what I was missing.

cameroncrazy80, I think alot of people are discounting this as a record breaker...the consensus across this board is smaller, slower, gentler with a feeling of "disappointment.

That is just what everyone I think is hoping for. A lot of people don't want this to be a record breaker for instance because to many inversions make an uncomfortable ride (not fun) and because of the problems that the last record breaker they built had. IE Top Thrill Dragster. A lot of people want a mid range 150-250 foot tall coaster with inversions. They think it will cause less problems and be an overall better ride than what a record breaker might be.

^I do agree with you, so please don't get me wrong...I would like a great coaster with different elements that doesn't necessarily have to break records, but I do think there is much more to this ride than what is being seen.

Who is disappointed? I for one have called this a looper since the first track arrival. I am extremely happy and I think many feel the same way.

Please though find me the disappointed ones. (I am sure there are a few but, please all of us here are happy too see a new coaster).

I honestly do not care what kind of coaster it is. I will ride anything, anytime, anywhere, except one coaster. So any new coaster is fine by me.

I don't honestly care what kind it is either. It looks like fun already & it's not even done or appears to be near finished! I can't wait! ;-)

Hey, I'll be in line right next to you on opening day, so please don't think that I am bashing this coaster.

I'm not saying this will be a record breaker, but I have said since the construction started, and I'm still saying I think there may be a lot more to this coaster than meets the eye. Wait til the season ends and let's see what other areas are cleared out. They've started way too early for there not to be a lot more to come. Otherwise this ride is going to be finished by October.

I agree personally that there is a lot more to this that we won't see until after this season. vhoward, I wish I could be there on opening day, but I live 12 hours away and have a crappy job, plus I am trying to save up for an engagement ring, so hopefully late summer next year I will be out there. I haven't been since Sept. 2004. I miss it out there sooo bad!

Its already a record breaker. "First coaster to be started a year in advance!" :)

Well I guess that is one record.

From the looks of it, this ride doesn't follow some of the trends CP has developed over the years with roller coasters. Usually we get something huge (see the last three coasters built), but this is different. This isn't a bad thing though.

2008:Magnum XL-200 | Top Thrill Dragster
2007:Corkscrew | Magnum XL-200 | Maverick

This is also the first coaster in at least six years that they didn't start building the "hill" first.

It doesnt matter what kind it is, we've already seen that it goes upside down, so theres a plus. And besides, its Cedar Point so it has to be something good and "Record" Breaking.
