Raptor closed on last day

As for e-stop. Yes and no.

If the first few cars make it to the mid course you could e-stop and hope it catches the train enough to keep it from rolling back @ mid.

But the person at controls would actually have to be watching in order to be quick enough (this is not lightning fast either, the train will enter very slowly before directional change). And odds are they where not. But I wasn't there, so no telling.

Every crew member knows to watch the block on days when the wind is blowing in the right directions!

I still find it hard to believe the first few rows did not make the block, and yes it can and will roll back from the block with 1/3 the train, adding wind and the cold, very easy. If none of the cars made it up their either someone lied, they didn't heat the trains in the morning if required, or something mechanical went wrong.

Cheers!

Believe me, all eyes were on that train...throughout the park...and MOST IMPORTANTLY...the person in controls did not take their eye off of that train, and they had their hand over E-Stop & Ride stop...ready to go should it make it to the block brake and slow down or change directions. Also, there is no way to "heat" the trains other than sending them around the course to warm them up.

I'll buy the first 2, but not the last one. (although I'm sure it holds true for most employees).

You can’t heat raptors wheel assembly?
Does maintenance know that?

But then again the hour they spent with the torches in the very cold morning hours multiple times while trains where in storage I’m sure they where just bored and all.

But then again when they told us why they where doing it, before we could power up, that seemed to make sense.

For the answer yes they can, do, and will heat Raptor’s wheel assemblies on very cold mornings. You guys where lead’s and didn’t know this? Not trying to be a smarta## just very surprised.

Yes some of us have run the ride and performed almost every possible procedure with the ride my friend, and then some. I know start up and shut down procedures and policies, la la!

As for the crew I didn’t mean it was your fault by any means, but something is off when you roll the train back, steps missed, phone calls on conditions not made, and or even mechanical error as I had stated.

Cheers!

The best part about Sunday was Jen, who was scared of anything bigger than Gemini at the beginning of the season and absolutely hated Magnum when I first took her on it, riding all of our last rides on Magnum and putting her hands up in the air.

I knew from that point that she was starting to break through her fear. Before that ride, everything else she rode with a death grip.

I would have never guessed that on Sunday, you did a great job in breaking her in.

I wish we could have made it up for the whole weekend. Jess' fault...hehe.

I told her on the way out that since we didn't get a closing day ride on MF that it has to be our first ride on opening day. You and Jen are welcome to join us.

Ride on, MrScott!

^^ wow... if you weren't there... be quiet! the raptor crew is always on top of their game. and yes, they know what they're doing, especially after 6 months of running the same ride every day.

I don't think they have pre-heated raptor in years. I dont think they do it for ANY ride anymore.

I also found this while searching Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JRI5JZBof-o

If you want to see the ride in non-motion. I like the comment where the guy says it isn't a rollback. :)

Something like a bad wheel (which should have been fixed by maintenance at night) could have combined with the wind to help cause the rollback as well. The wind on its own or the wheel on its own might not have caused a rollback, but together, maybe they could.

Remember the year they put those big heaters under the Millennium Force station? I don't remember if that was 2000 or 2001. When you got in and leaned over the gap between the cars you could feel this blast of warm air, which was totally welcome on that day.

I remember that, Jeff. That was the best thing about riding MF! It was closing weekend of the season that I remember. I believe it was the same year that Lighthouse Point opened. Whichever that was?

I remember the warm station closing weekend of 2001. I think they have heated wheels on other occasions though.

To those who have never worked a ride location at Cedar Point:

Everyone is required to read a manual at the beginning of the season outlining the operating procedures of the ride as set forth by the manufacturer or cedar point itself. All employees are required to sign a statement saying they have read the manual and understand what is in it.

For Raptor the manual says that Raptor can run in most situtations except in high winds an rain. It was recomended that Raptor NOT run in winds higher than 20mph if the train was empty and 30mph if trains were loaded.

Therefore, if winds were constant at 10-15mph that morning, yes the train should have been fine. However, no one can control mother nature and her wind gusts. I'm sure everyone knows that sometimes I gust of wind happens in a matter of seconds and if the train had already dropped off the lift there is nothing that could've been done....by anyone.

April said it perfectly...

But it's so much more FUN to place blame on people who didn't do anything wrong! I, for one, have been known to cause weeks worth of downtime by just looking at a ride... maybe I dreamt about Raptor rolling back, I'll take the blame for it!

Heh... I got made fun of for actually reading the manual. ;(
