Raptor and the shirt policy

let me tell you wal mart haters this, i work at a local grocery store part time on the weekends for some extra cash. I work in the produce department. my mom also works in the produce department in a walmart 15 minutes away. I have a friend that works at stop and shop too.
well guess what?! bananas sell for my store at 69 cents per lb. they sell at shaw's for 69 cents a lb. they sell at walmart for 49 cents per lb. the store i work at is suppose to be a high end grocery store with nice stuff. The same company delivers to my store that delivers to wal mart and shaws! my store and shaws just have a higher mark up and you pay more for the stores profits! also, there is a banana rack at my store that sells for $9.50. that same banana rack sells for $3.29 at walmart! Its the same stuff they just don't mark up their items 300 percent. so if you wanna talk about some corporate crap and how a business screws you over, talk about target and stop and shop.

Also, wal mart does not treat their employees horribly. in fact they dont treat them bad at all. my mom works at wal mart to get out of the house, not because she has too. The benefits from the store are insane! she has to work 28 hours a week to recieve full health benefits for my family and it helps out a lot because my dad is self employed. i would like to see proof of employees being treated badly.

I actually like wal-mart, nothing wrong with it, as long as I'm saving money I don't care. Oh wait, that's right Ben I'm an MSU student and of course only MSU students would shop at such a place! :)

Walmart is evil. If you don't believe it, google and find out. The prices on those bananas are artificially low, far lower than most retailers can afford to sell them, simply thanks to Walmart's unprecedented buying power and ability to take a financial hit on some items while making a killing on others and on volume. Additonally your wages are being driven lower as Walmart puts competators out of business, then lowers wages for the huge surplus of workers left in your community.

Also, Jesz, have you seen the crocs flips? Super, super comfy, easy to clean and supportive, worth the investment.

Wal-Mart's success comes at the success of small business. I'm all for a competitive, global economy, and so I don't suggest any kind of federal oversight, but I can't buy from a company that is the single largest importer of goods from China and uses their supply chain to bully suppliers and competition around.

Target, screwing me over?? Most of the items I buy at Target are only either slightly higher, or slightly lower than things at my Wal-Mart. The only difference I can tell is quality of merchandise. A $12 t-shirt at Target vs. a $10 t-shirt from WallyWorld, there's going to be a world of difference in fit, feel and longevity.

Also, these are the flip flops I wear most of the time:

Blah Blah Blah I'm such a consumer whore because I buy quality and expensive clothes...

Jeff you illustrated capitalism at work - Using your dollar to let your opinions be heard. You don't agree with their tactics and choose not to shop there. Totally within your right, and how everything should work.

I shop at Wal-Mart when I have to buy something really cheap, that even at Meijer is too expensive. Beyond that, I usually shop at Meijer, because for the majority of things, it is not that much more expensive that Wal-Mart.

I also support small businesses. cpfanatic066, what you don't understand is that Wal-Mart is taking away from small businesses. Small businesses cannot afford to sell their food at a cheap price, but Wal-Mart can. Tell me, if that bannana rack you are speaking of sells for $9.50 at your store, and $3.29 at Wal-Mart, where do you think the consumers will go? Wal-Mart. That is making a lot of small businesses close their doors. Just watch the South Park episode about Wal-Mart. ;)

I also have heard what Jeff has said. That the majority of Wal-Mart's merchandise is straight from China. I understand that we can't always buy American. But I would rather support our economy than theirs. So I try to buy American whenever I can.

When I am in Michigan I shop at the local grocery store named VG's, if not Meijer. It may be a bit more expensive than the Kroger down the road. But I know the people. They are very friendly and helpful. Their store isn't filled with a bunch of stuck up teenage employees. They have good quality food, and I feel at home when I am there.

Now for the treatment of their employees, I am not too sure about that. Here in the south I have never seen Wal-Mart cashiers work slower. If I had worked that way at Toy's R Us, or anywhere up north, I would have been fired on the spot. They are rude, extremely slow, and half of them do not know what they are doing. Yet they still have jobs. No one is getting fired. So they must not be treated that badly, if they are allowed to work so poorly.

And Missy, thanks for the suggestion. :) But I have seen Crocs, and I don't think a pair of them will ever touch my feet. While I said when buying flips I don't really look for fashion, those are another story. I find them horribly ugly. lol. But thanks anyway.

If I get a chance I will post a pic of my flips. Loopy won't like them , because they don't have much support. Maybe I should invest in a good pair. But I just don't have the money to pay $20-$30 on a pair, when they are going to get all dirty and probably ruined from being outside so much. It is not like sneakers, where you wear socks with them. I do invest good money in my sneakers though. Usually $50-$150.

The two things are un-related. You can be treated badly and not be fired. You can be treated well and still get fired. The fact that they still have jobs says nothing about the pay rate or lack of benefits.

Or the fact that Wal-marx would rather bring in illegals to do their cleaning than hire legal workers (with their own VALID SSN).

I know that when you arn't doing a good job in retail, you get yelled at, and are threatened that if you do not straighten up then you will get fired. These employees are rude and slow. If they were getting treated badly, they wouldn't be working like that. They would be doing an excellent job for fear of getting fired. Work in retail for a couple of weeks and you will know what I am talking about. ;)

^ - telling sucky employees that they are doing a sucky job and will be fired if they don't straighten up isn't treating them badly. That's called being the boss.

Paying them minimum wage (when the effort they put forth and the quality of work they do merits pay MORE than minimum wage), offering little or no benefits and/or limiting their scheduled hours to just below the threshold that would qualify for benefits, and offering them no chance for advancement. THOSE are ways of treating employees badly.

What you describe most definitely is not treating employees badly.

Just because Wal-Mart tolerates incompetence does not mean its a good place to work, or even that they're not "getting treated badly". The two have nothing to do with one another.

...or...

What John said. :)

If I do not shop at Wal-Mart, because I do not support them, then why would I support people working there? I think you missed the majority of my post, and skipped to the one part where I said that their employees do not get treated bad. Which I also said, "I am not TOO SURE about how their employees get treated." I did not say, "Their employees get treated great!" ;)

As for the flip flops, you got me there DJ. :) I think I buy 5 pair, for around $2 each. Which comes out to $10. If not less. I was just exaggarating. I do not re call myself having 10 pair of flip flops a year. But as I had said before, this year money is even tighter. So I bought one pair at the family dollar store. No Wal-Mart flips this summer. :)

John, I am not saying a boss telling an employee to do their job is treating them badly. What I am saying is, if they arn't even being told to do their job, what makes you think that they are being treated badly otherwise?

And Wal-Mart isn't the only place that will make their employees work just under the minimum of hours, so that they cannot get health insurance. I worked at Toy's R Us, and Gymboree. They both did the same thing. They would make sure that we would work up to 39 hours, but no more.

I am not defending working for Wal-Mart. I just think you misunderstood what I meant to say.

Since I know another comment will probably come back at me, "Well how do you know what their employees are like if you don't shop there?" While we are apartment searching we are staying with my boyfriends parents down here in Alabama. My mother in law shops at Wal-Mart for everything. There are a few local grocery stores around here that I plan to shop at, when we move out.

Ya know it is just like you two to team up on me. ;)

I'm confused. If someone is working for minimum wage and their job merits getting paid more, then why don't they find another job that pays them 'what they're worth'?

OMG!!! You just solved it! You're now officially qualified to join the GOP!!! Congrats!

jugga,
my wal mart will start me off at 8 bucks an hour if i wanted to work there to be a cashier. minimum wage here is 7.40 an hour. thats 60 cents more than minimum wage. not only that but you are guaranteed a raise of 60 cents every year. also, they do offer incredible benefits. like i said, my mom works 28 hours a week and receives full benefits!

I dont understand how that is being treated terribly.
