I would put Magnum in there as iconic, maybe the most iconic coaster in the park.

I'd rather be in my boat with a drink on the rocks,
than in the drink with a boat on the rocks.

Absolutely agree. It's a toss up between Magnum and Millennium.

I don't know why but I get this feeling that CP is going to display some coaster trains where those wedges in the fence are located. Probably not, just a thought... Now that I think about it, I really doubt it but I'm really confused what that point of the new fence is.

New for 2018... RMC Iron Horse!!!

That there.

Given my definition of iconic*

...

*a representative symbol

Using the Webster definition of an icon, "A person or thing regarded as a representative symbol of something." (Pretty much what you said) the coasters you listed don't fulfill "iconic" very much. Ask someone in Oregon or Florida what coasters they think of when they think of Cedar Point, and I *almost* guarantee that it will be Millennium, Dragster, and Magnum, with maybe Rapter and Maverick thrown in. People see Cedar Point as a park that breaks records (Even though its been over 10 years, they still see it that way) and for that reason most view the coasters that broke said height records as the iconic ones.

The most dangerous enemy is the one you don't know you have.

Upon further inspection, I would definitely need to rotate the leaked layout. I had forgotten that the Marina entrance actually split between the Goodtime and the Cadillac Cars. This would put the drop alongside the Marina entrance and the lift closer to Raptor's cobra roll. This also lines up with the FAA location much better.

Those may be the first rides they mention, but I'm not sure that fits the definition of icon either.

If you showed somebody the pictures of the following things, would they nearly immediately think of CP?

1. A side view of the first drop on MF
2. The TTD tophat with the Christmas tree lights lit up
3. A Corkscrew train directly above people on the midway
4. A Gatekeeper train going through the keyholes above the main entrance
5. The 95 degree drop on Maverick.

These are all images that are pretty unique to Cedar Point.

Personally, I'd also add:
6. Red and Blue Gemini trains racing down the hill
But, I realize there are other "racing" coasters that might be confused for Gemini. And confusion like this is where I think Magnum loses it's iconic status. There's enough red hypercoasters that I don't know that it's unique enough any more to be "iconic." Heck, I think I'd have to look closely to determine if a picture was Magnum or Steel Force. Similarly, Raptor is just another B&M invert anymore, not something unique and immediately identifiable as Cedar Point.

Not interested in what someone in Oregon or Florida thinks of when they think of Cedar Point.

I was having a grand ol' time talking about what I think of as iconic coasters at Cedar Point.

Illustration? The way you placed the layout (way the drop is facing) seems to fit perfectly.

By rotating the layout is there a possibility the drop could face somewhere else? (Towards lake erie, etc.) Or is the way it is currently facing the only thing that seems to "stick"?

Maybe. Maybe not. These would be images unique to Cedar Point for coaster enthusiasts, but out among the general public, I'm not so sure.

Many park guests would no more be able to look at a photo and say, "Oh, that's Millennium Force at Cedar Point" than I would be able to look at a photo of a car and identify the make and model. (The last car I rented was blue and had four doors, and that exhausts the depth of my knowledge about the car.)

Personally, I'd also add:
6. Red and Blue Gemini trains racing down the hill

No argument here.

Ok fine Noggin, you said Mean Streak is an "icon" of Cedar Point. Care to explain that? How does having a large structure dictate icon status?

Argh! Was going to quote my post and the cat landed in my lap at just the right time to jar my hand.... and now it's deleted.

Anyways. Mean Streak is an iconic coaster for me (and can I point out, again, that I was simply talking about what was iconic at the park to me -- not anyone else; and no attempt was made to "dictate" icon status.)

A large structure doesn't "dictate" icon status. The large structure that is Mean Streak is an icon -- and let me say it again, for me -- because it is a gorgeous, massive wood coaster. I love the look of wooden coasters, and that wood coaster in that place is an image that "says" Cedar Point. To me.

I mean like 15°-20° rotation counter-clockwise. I will make a new graphic later tonight when I have photoshop available. In general, the location of the elements is close, I just wish to refine it a bit more.

My icons and why:

Magnum: First coaster to breach 200ft, started the "coaster wars"

Millenium Force: First giga coaster, has won best steel coaster multiple times, great way to start a millenium.

TTD: First strata coaster, at the center of the park it is the tallest structure in the park, and i couldn't imagine it not being in CP's skyline. This ride really makes the park feel different
.
Bluestreak: Oldest coaster in the park, sense of nostalgia

Corkscrew: first coaster to invert three times, and fly over the midway

Gemini: Not any coaster like it, and it was once the tallest in the world.

Mean Streak: like it or not, it was once the largest, tallest, fastest of its kind

Raptor: Was the tallest and fastest inverted coaster and once had the largest loop

Rougarou: First coaster to be converted from stand up to floorless, once opened as the tallest, fastest, longest stand up.

Gatekeeper: tallest inversion, tallest wingcoaster, fastest wing coaster, longest wing coaster, first coaster to keyhole through an entrance (even if it wasn't, its significance makes it an icon in the park)

Maverick: this coaster was a success in terms of theming and punch, the park really needed this airtime machine and it really showed you don't need sheer height and speed to make a great coaster.

CCMR: again, sense of nostolgia.

IMO a coaster's history and significance to the park is what makes it iconic to the park.

I could foresee the (Valravn) station being located where the dodgems were, seeing as thought they are adding additional concrete there and not removing the stairs. Not sure why else you would need stairs if it's just a normal walkway. And don't even get my started on bad entrance/exit locations. ...

I'm seeing the new sign and entrance being placed at the end of the BS midway (you know, to attract more attention to that area). I think the new station will be close to the perimeter road fence along with its queue taking up part of the old Turnpike Cars finish/infield. Also I think that the new dive element will be nicely viewed from the main midway (looking south), probably where the path currently is to the current Marina gate exit. Visually I think that untouched area (at least in the last 40 years) is going to look a little different next year. Just my 2c.

Fair enough, I digress.

The most dangerous enemy is the one you don't know you have.

I was riding the train on Monday and Mean Streak was Millenium Force according to a group of folks, they even mentioned it was voted the best coaster. That's pretty iconic if ya ask me.

^ You should post that in the Crazy things people say topic.

Absolutely agree with this. Everytime i walk, or drive by Mean Streak I am in awe of the structure. I love the look of wood coasters, possibly in part as I worked as a carpenter for some time... But nonetheless Mean Streak is, at least to me, a beautiful sight.

noggin's avatar

I don't ride Mean Streak every time I visit the park -- though I do not have the issues with the ride many here do have -- but that huge pile of lumber out at the end (kind of) of the point is just such a strong visual for me, and a visual strongly tied to that particular park.

For me, steel coasters (and don't get me wrong, I love many, many steel coasters*) are, visually, not as impressive as wood coasters.

*Magnum, Bizarro/SROS, SFOT's Shock Wave, Raging Bull to name a few.

This might be a better fit. My only concern is the location of the Marina Entrance Booth with this version. However, it does fit along the current Marina Midway path much better.
