I avoid the whole pop vs. soda debate. I'll ask for a Coke, Pepsi, Dr. Pepper, or root beer. If I want to use a general term, I'll just call it a soft drink. The reason is that using "soda" or "pop" discretely is more or less meaningless. If you say soda water, you are getting somewhere. Use soda and pop together and you will get soda pop. Coke and Pepsi are both soda pop, but neither are a soda or a pop.
Right now, I'm drinking a Pepsi lime. I am not drinking a soft drink though. Emeril on the food network might say I kicked it up a notch.
I personally perfer Coke products. I like variety even more so I buy some Pepsi products as well as others.
On the whole 'soda' vs. 'pop' debate, I always here it called either soda or soda 'pap' when I'm in the States. In Canada, it's always pop. Same way when I'm in the states I confuse people with my 'zed' as opposed to 'zee'. My last name starts with a Z and if I'm checking into a hotel or something where I have to spell it, I'll say "Zed, O, N...." and the person gives me a wierd look and says "You mean Zee?" I just say, sure.
We'll miss you MrScott and Pete
If I'm not mistaken, the US is the only country that says "zee" instead of "zed". I try to use whatever is the "norm" for where I am, though. If I'm outside of the US, I'll use "zed". If I'm in Ohio, I sometimes say pop, but I try to avoid that because I think it sounds dumb now. LOL!! I'll just avoid the word usually.
