News: Cedar Point blog shows footers at WWL site

It could be interesting to see if something BIG could lift turn right and drop through the mine ride and go around the island with Millie. Just a thought, not trying to be dramatic here. They made millie go over the midway , it could be done. I actually sort of drew it on one of walts pics. it looks do-able?

WE could draw on his pics if he does not mind, and post them somewhere to see what we are each thinking. could be fun at least. gosh I need a life!

Kevinj, if you mean like BORG Assimilator at Carowinds, then you are right. It is very sweet flying over water instead of blank land, e.g. X-Flight. BORG is by far my favorite flyer for just that very reason, because flyers need to have interesting stuff to look at while in the flying position. If CP were to build something like that, I would be extremely excited.

Instead of BORG Assimilator, it could be a dueling flyer called "Snoopy vs. The Red Baron"

Although obviously there is "Woodstock Express," I doubt we would see any large-scale attractions being named anything like "Snoopy vs The Red Baron" just because:

1) CF parks seem to create their own original names for coasters,

and

2) I wonder if CF is in a position to assume the permanence of the Peanuts tie-in?

"Kiddie-rides" would be easier to rename. But a large-scale specifically-advertised coaster is a bit different. In the case of park take-overs, it happens, but I can't see it at Cedar Point.

To DILinator -

Hey there Mr. Kinzel ;)

I reeally like DIL's idea. Whenver someone makes a very detailed, very plausible suggestion like that, though, I always wonder.. if CP management does read the site, what happens when they read that and it actually is verry close to the real deal? Would they modify the idea so it doesn't look like they got guessed out, contact Walt and ask him to remove the post, etc...

Speaking of which, hey Walt, has CP ever emailed you or anything about what's on the site? I think that'd be an interesting conversation to have, haha

You're a little late, AphelionAxeMan, but welcome to the party.

Was it really necessary to blur out that little tiny bit of the photo?

As has already been mentioned, there really isn't anything of significance behind the blur. I was just being cautious.

1, you're not on Cedar Point property so they can't exactly do anything if you take pictures

Apparently you missed the other big discussion we had about this, but since you seem agitated, I'll repeat here:

Whether I have the legal right to post them isn't the point. Cedar Point obviously has a specific plan in place for the announcement and marketing of Project 2007 and I have no desire to derail that in any way.

It's no secret that a lot of work has been done on the former White Water Landing site. Aerial photos wouldn't give it away, but it's a safe bet to say they would show more than the park is ready to reveal. I'm here to work with the park, not against them. This isn't Dateline NBC or 20/20.

2, you're too far away to make out anything significant

Very wrong.

what's the point when there's going to be more work done in the area by the time the park opens and you're allowed to take pictures back there

Pictures from 1,000 feet reveal much more than photos from the ground. But, if the park gives me the OK to post the photos after May 6, I will. Otherwise, we'll wait until the announcement.

I'd take pictures of the entire area and put them up on my own personal website.

Knock yourself out. No Cedar Point fan site would let you share the link.

without me getting in trouble for anything.

Because you have no perks to lose.

I'm really not agitated about it, just kinda like..."that was unecessary in my opinion." I didn't search for anything else about the photos you took and I know they've been up for about a week, so if I'm beating a dead horse by arguing about it, I apologize.

I don't know the exact details of your reputation with the park, but obviously if you get some kind of special treatment, I wouldn't want to wreck whatever your relationship with park management is like if I was in your position. As you pointed out, a person like me, who doesn't have any special access or incentives to lose by posting the pictures, has less of a reason not to post them.

As far as what the aerial photos would reveal, well...I haven't been to the park at all during the offseason, but I know of at least 2 people who have, and managed to take pictures of the area. Now, I've kept quiet about it because they were actually on park property, technically making the pictures illegal. I have no intent of posting illegally taken pictures, nor do I condone taking them, but let's just say that as of 2 weeks ago, there was a lot more groundwork and footers than Tony and Tyler have shown us. Nothing that could really give away the type of ride at this point, but I see your point that seeing the area from above gives a much better idea of the layout of whatever's going back there. The park wouldn't want that being given away yet, plus I know CP has a reputation as a clean park, and the fact that the entire area is a big mess at the moment probably isn't something they want the whole world to see.

I'm really not pissed off about the blurring of the one photo or that you (I'm assuming) took photos of the WWL site that you didn't post. It's more of my personality than anything, I like testing the limits of what I can get away with legally, and the fact that you could legally post any aerial pictures of the area and chose not to just irks me a bit.

*Edit* Yeah, I didn't even see the "Update: Aerial Photos" thread. >.< Someone slap me.

^ I agree with the above post. We can all see airial photos of CP at Widows live local, why do a fly over if not to see WWL site. Then to pull a T&T and tease us with I have the pictures and you don't get to see them HA HA. You should have waited till you can show them and then tell us you have them. Do you work in the marketing department too.

Windows Live Local is not "Live." They are archived photos from quite a while ago. If you look at it, White Water Landing is still there.

Some people just can't live with a secret. The mystery surrounding the "2007 Project" makes Opening Day even more exciting.

Even that isn't the point. It's his website and he might not be able to bring us the same content we all love on this website if he doesn't do as asked.

Walt's work has inspired me to go to CP and get some pictures of my own. I even bought a new $350 camera (the biggest investment I've ever made) for this coming season. It feels great to say I have 250 pictures of one amusement park. I couldn't imagine having thousands. I know I take pictures of the park because I enjoy them. I share them on the web just in case there might be an interested person who will enjoy them. I'm sure Walt feels the same way, except that he has a lot of interested people already. Some of you have to appreciate what you get.

Thanks Walt. :)

Who's laughing? If I didn't mention it, I would have gotten 300 questions as to where they were. If you thought what I said was a tease, then you need to work on your reading comprehension.

The part you should have agreed with in the above post was the part about beating a dead horse.

And what if that picture did have something behind that blur and Walt is just saying that? It's Cedar Point's project, their construction, their secret to reveal, and Walt does not want to do anything to steal their thunder because let's face it, it's some big thunder.

I'm sure there isn't any track put down yet, but do know there are more footers in place, and any specific shots can reveal more about the coaster, but again, this isn't someone else's job to ruin that surprise. PB isn't here to ruin surprises or to give insider "top secret" information, because the first time it would happen, it could very well be the last. Walt does a lot for everyone here as it is, and with 3 weeks until the park opens, there is no need to test the limits just to appease a couple people.

DILinator... great post.

I really like the idea of the new Frontier Town midway... makes sense in a lot of ways. I also feel that the removal or moving of the Antique Cars is a possibility, although maybe not as much as you might think... if a coaster was to fly over the AC area, it could do so on a few well-placed footers.

Based on the estimated cost for two large coasters, and the fact that things are going OK but not gangbusters for Cedar Fair right now, I'd really be surprised if two coasters were installed. It's just too expensive a prospect. Look at the infrastructure costs alone involved in creating a new midway area in FT. That plus a coaster (if I had to pick, I'd guess it was a flyer... and I wanna call it "Lariat") would be a whole lot of cash.

Also doubt that a track swing over Sandusky Bay, while very cool, is much of a possibility. Too much of an engineering nightmare when you are looking at the freezing conditions of an icy winter (I know we haven't had those lately, but it'll happen). But I believe that the new coaster will set a height record for its type, that's almost a given, looking at CP's track record of new rides... even Skyhawk has the silly distinction of being the tallest ride of its type... purely for marketing purposes.

But the idea of reconfiguring large parts of FT into more of a destination area is worthwhile. Loads of potential there. *** Edited 4/16/2006 5:20:17 PM UTC by CPAlumni***

I agree CpAlumni.
And DILnator... I was pretty much engrossed by your post.

It makes complete sense to revamp the area and make it come alive. I know plenty of people don't even bother with Frontier Town because of the "been there done that" mindset. What makes more sense than just one big shot coaster back there is giving people a refreshed enviorment... one that'll encourage them to spend more time and money. I don't know about two coasters in one year, but I'm so excited regardless!

I couldn't agree with you more, Gomez! After finding Walt's original site, Virtual Midway, and his pictures back in 2002, I took my little Sony digital camera to the park with plans of just taking a few pictures of my own. Little did I know, that that was the begining of a hobby that has cost me more than $5,000 since that time.

I think Gomez said it best...

Well, you never know. Maybe with nothing major in 2004 and Flats in 2005 and 2006 I think they've been saving up their money for something unbelivable. :)

I don't think money is an issue with Cedar Point when it comes to future expansions.

B&M's prices:

Tatsu: $21M (flyer)
Patriot: $14M (invert)
Hyrda: $13M (floorless)
Medusa: $15M (floorless)
Wildfire: $14M (sit down looper)

These are a random sampling of coasters from rcdb that had prices listed. If CP is willing to spend $25M on MF and TTD, then it's not out of the question that 2 B&Ms could go in. You have to consider also that the price for 2 B&Ms that are installed simultaneously would probably be less than simply adding two of the above-listed prices together (economies of scale: already have machinery and personnel onsite, etc.)

Just some food for thought.

Gomez's avatar

Only one of those B&M's are sitting on flat land (Medusa).

CP or CF (however you look at) borrow money for new rides, improvements, additions, etc. That's how SF continues business even when they're in $1 billion of debt. They like their projects to payback in one year. They only spend big money when they know people will come to ride it. I remember an interview with Rob Decker (planning department) where he talked about his tight budget on TTD at $25 million. He said the station for TTD was about to go over budget or something like that.
