I think Rick Astley played it just right with Rick Rolls. He came off as bemused, tolerant but not delighted, and an okay sport.

Adam, here's a case that refutes your argument: Kevin Bacon. The man adores Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon--to the point of lobbying against Arnold Schwarzenegger having his own 'degrees' game. Yet Bacon and Six Degrees both continue to be cool.

And by the way, I am three degrees from Kevin Bacon, two different ways. Just saying.
