Mr. Segway?

RideWarrior18's avatar

So, if I'm not working, I pretty much go to the park every Sunday. And every Sunday there is this guy there, all dressed up, riding around in a Segway!

Has anyone else ever seen this guy? Anyone have a clue to who he is?

never heard nor seen him, I guess he's just trying to beat all the other coaster nuts into the lines and to get there the fastest........:)

I saw him about 2 weeks ago on sunday as I was leaving the park... he was entering and i pointed it out to all of my friends

What? This is Top Thrill!?!?!? I thought I was riding Iron Dragon!!

Very nice guy. Met him at halloween weekends at east harbor state park a few years ago Saw him twice at the point and talked to him. He has a handicap sticker for segway and allowed to use it. Really enjoys getting out and about. Wave him down and give him a friendly hi. He loves to talk.

Frito Joe

We have seen him on a number of Sundays this summer. Wish I could pull off that kind of style and still ride the rides comfortably. :)

That is my Uncle Harold. So next time you see him say "Hey Uncle Harold"

Saw him today all over the park. Best dressed guy in the park every time we see him :)

Wait, the park lets some random guy roll around on a Segway? That's a disaster waiting to happen.

I saw him Saturday when we were there two days ago. I saw him over by Maverick. I hope he doesn't run into a crowd on that thing. It's one thing to bump into someone while everyone watches Dragster roar by... it's another to run someone over on a segway.

Why is a segway ANY different that the scooters that CP rents out every day?? Two wheels vsfour? Anything else? I have seen some pretty careless people on the four wheel scooters running around CP and not paying a lot of attention to where they were going. Untill this guy starts running into a lot of people he is not any more of a threat than anyone else.

Why ride coasters? Becuse there is NOTHING better to do than riding a coaster!

A Segway, at least based on every account of riding one I've heard, requires a substantial amount of effort to operate. That is, a scooter is designed to allow otherwise disabled people the ability to move great distances. A Segway requires substantial effort (relative to sitting on a scooter) to move great distances.

Not to mention that they travel at a higher rate of speed than any scooter I've ever seen.

I don't get why they allow this at CP, even if it's only one guy. You'd think the park wouldn't allow it, because CP is effectively signing off on his actions. So, if he hurts another guest, perhaps said guest would have a case against the park itself.

If you believe that standing vs sitting is "substantial", if you believe that shifting your weight a little bit is "substantial", then you could be right. I believe that earlier in this thread ( I haven't gone back to check) it was stated that this man had difficult time walking, and that is why he rides the segway. This as you say allows this person to go great distances. As for disabled persons, I have never had a problem with them being allowed to ride the scooters.

I do not know who is disabled and who is not. But, I have seen many people that certainly do not appear to he disabled using them in the park. Even that does not bother me. It is the ones that are careless that I have a problem with. The ones who are doing circles and horse playing around that bother me.

Apparently you have never seen scooters travel much. Scooters can reach speeds of 25-30MPH. They can also be dialed down so as to not go so fast. I don't know about the segway. To me the segway as more of a balance concern. If you do not have good balance, the segway could be a problem as you want to view it. For all we know, this person could have good balance but unable to walk great distances.

If he is as careful on the segway as the people on the scooters then I don't have a problem with this. As for liability, CP will have the same liabilith if someone gets run over by one of their scooters. They did provide it through the rental department.

I saw him a few times this season, he seems like he just likes watching the rides. I like him. In comparison to most of the guests, he seemed more laid back, and just came to relax. He was always minding his own business, and quite well dressed.
I would always be jealous of his segway though...man, if I were a sweep with a segway...

Again, I'm just repeating what I've heard from everyone who's ridden them. They're not easy to ride, and require a lot of effort from one's "core".

Apparently you have never seen scooters travel much. Scooters can reach speeds of 25-30MPH.

Apparently you're completely full of crap. Not only would that be an incredibly dangerous speed for a device with almost zero safety features, the amount of energy required from what is a very small set of batteries would mean you could go 25-30 mph for about 5 seconds, if that.

Brandon

Take a trip down to the nearest medical facility and check it out. I have. That is the information that I was given when I was trying to decide whether or not to get one for my father. It was that speed ability that made me decide NOT to get one for him precisely because of the danger of that speed on such a small vehicle.

If speed alone was the deciding factor on battery usage, then you shouldent have a problem with the segway. If this guy was running fast through the park, then it woulden't take him long to run out of battery to operate it. Aftter alll, the segway runs the same way on batteries as the scooters.

You should be as agrivated with the irresponsible scooter riders as with this segway. Since you haven' commented on them, it appears as though you are giving them a pass here.

I've ridden a Segway, and I agree with Brandon. I wouldn't call them "not easy", though. They're really an extension of your legs, and you kind of just have to think about where you're going. I tend to lump them in with motorized scooters that kids ride (or possibly even a minibike), not the ones that are used for handicapped transport.

I'm thinking you were looking at mopeds and not medical scooters if they were all 25-30 mph.

The fastest I can find at The Scooter Storeis about 7mph. And most of them are much slower than that.

Goodbye MrScott

John

Every one of my family has been hit by a scooter at least once this summer while at CP. I'll keep my opinions about the people I see on scooters most of the time to myself, as I don't want to open that can of worms. Every time I've seen Mr. Segway, he's been very observant of who and what is around him. Not to say some kid wouldn't inadvertantly jump out in front of him, but he seems to be much more observant of his surroundings than most people I've seen on scooters. Not to mention, much better dressed. ;)

Yes, and you are looking at POWER CHAIRS vs Scooters.

I have seen this guy ride. He looks stable and responsible and in control. This is not the first time he has ridden the segway. I equate it to first riding a 2 wheel bike. It is a learned experience. It takes time and practice to master. Once you do, you can be pretty good at it. This guy has deminstrated to me at least, that he is not a threat to the walking public. Until he loses control on the segway, I do not have a problem with him riding at CP. Some of you do. That's fine. To each his own.
