Millennium Down Indefinitly

I saw on CB that MF has 2 cables, one for pulling the train and one for returning the sled. How does this work?

Check out this thread from a while back to learn just how the cables are routed:

From a logic stand point, determining if its going down correctly should not be too hard.  THe computer system already should know.  If its going backwards and the computer system "thinks" it shouldnt, then it breaks.  How would it break?  I have no clue.  But determining what is a "good" or "bad" drop should not be difficult.

I'm sorry I showed up this weekend and broke it! LOL :)

Also broke a Magnum axle to boot!

Hey guys just some info from the ride today that I thought you would like to know.  The cable was in the process of being put back onto the lift hill this afternoon...and the cable is from INTAMIN and not from the US!  They have started to move the train further up the lift and it is nearly at the crest of the hill...they look like they are planning on pulling it over sometime tomorrow afternoon while the park is not in operation....my hope and prayers are that we are back working by the start of Mania!

When I left the point at 6pm Mon, the new cable had made it through all the supports to the three flywheels in front of the station, and was threaded through them and tied to the track (with rope) starting up the lift hill. The rest of the cable was still on the spool it was delivered on. There were numerous workers on the ground and up top of the hill.
My first question, how to get this cable 300 ft into the air when the pull rope for it (the previous cable) is now missing?
What about the lift carriage, is it as badly damaged as it looked?
Since it was a stacked empty run with all three trains in station, did the yellow train move forwardinto the load station before the red car cleared the hill, and thus was subject to a meeting of the lift carriage at full speed reverse down the hill. (Side note: the yellow train is on the xfer track, since it has to be in the load station to get there was it there before or after the cable broke?)
After it's fixed, will it take two days to remove all the lockout/tagouts from all the controls? (Ride the CP&LE RR, and look at the control shed for the "elevator" lift, tagout's have tagout's attached to them? Just think of the paperwork... :-)
Will Intamin ever build a ride that doesn't eat more cost in maintainence the the original price tag?

THe cable you saw through the fly wheels near the station is the return cable.. the one that did NOT break.

Sparty asked a ?? on the 1st page about "extra" cables/chains. I know for a fact that last season anyway there is an extra chain in a HUGE box in the area under the loading platform of Raptor.

Welcome back Raptor riders-how was your flight??

Well just glad to hear that Natalie and other various employees were okay after the evac.  I'm sure they will have that ride up and running ASAP as it's Cedar Point we're talking about.  It's not a little park in Virginia I worked at in 2000 where they only ran one train on a certain coaster b/c they refused to fix the other one (God Bless Togo!).  Milliennium's cable made headlines in Cincinnati and Dayton, and even Atlanta's local news.  So a lift cable broke.  I didn't hear any headlines after Iron Dragon's chain broke haha.  Jeez.

There are two cables attached to the front of the catchwagon. The large cable pulls the catchwagon up the hill. The small cable pulls the catchwagon backwards over the hill peak. At first blush, it seems that a standard elevator anti-rollback could be used, which would engage if tension were lost on the hoisting cable. Trouble is, because of the cable routing, tension is lost on the hoisting cable every time the catchwagon goes over the peak of the hill. This is why there is a return cable. So it is simply impractical to put an anti-rollback on the catchwagon. There may be some kind of speed regulation on the catchwagon, but I doubt it. Unless they moved it within a half-hour of the cable break, the catchwagon did not end up on the ground; it was stopped in more-or-less the normal train loading position the first time I saw it, with a mess of cable coming off the top. Later in the day, it was pulled back under the station and removed one section at a time.

It's interesting how much talk this issue has generated. I know that when a chain breaks, no big deal we have another in a box down stairs. But a cable ?? What if Sky Ride's cable, "just snapped" ? I don't know. Cedar Point is rather lucky the cable broke with employees on it. I have been up in the funicular when I was doing a site check last year for a video production. Let me say that the funicular has a lot of up and down play to it (also cable driven). Someone who is scared of heights would not have been cool with coming back down on that thing. Also, (help me out RideMan) I don't recall seeing a anti-rollback device on the funicular either.

Did you find that message about MM on the CP web site?  I looked but couldn't find it.
(Never mind, you just answered my question)

Holy cow.  I'm even happier that I decided to go on Thursday.  No MF will stink, but VertiGo, Blue Streak, AND a MF Exit Pass (single-use, but still...)
