Rob: You seem to have a lot of anger about this subject. I don't think you understand what's at stake here.
The relationship of coaster enthusiasts with parks is shaky right now at best. This situation got so ugly that the president of ACE (American Coaster Enthusiasts) sent a letter to members asking that they back off the parks' marketing staffs. Apparently members were phoning and e-mail bombing PR reps asking for invited to their media days, special tours and other perks.
Make no mistake, the parks don't need us. Coaster enthusiasts account for such an incredibly small percentage of their guests that if they stopped catering to them, it wouldn't matter.
However, there is some public relations value in working with these people. Many of them are colorful characters (literally, in the case of Jerry :)), and they make for interesting copy in newspapers. This year Jerry, our very own Magnum addict Dan and another guy made the front page of the Sandusky Register. Free publicity for the park centered around the ultimate fans.
But these fans don't expect or think they deserve the attention. I don't think I deserve anything for the site either. However, if any of us were to release these photos, you can be sure that we would have no more opportunities to do site tours, attend special events, etc. (especially because one of our members here is an employee). The sources that give us qualified rumors would no longer be sources. The end result: We would be more in the dark than ever.
You have to play the game. For every action, there are consequences.
