My best/worst memorie is when mom took me last year right after i got mono. She felt bad for me and I talked her into taking me. It was the Tuesday after opening day and we rode Maggie in the middle of the day with no clouds anywhere in sight. Right at the top of the lift hill all hell broke loose. Out of nowhere lightning and rain and some little hail started falling. It hurt and was freezing. Before we got in line it was 65 degrees out but after we got off the ride it was 40.
It was fun yet painfull. It was the best day I ever had at the Point.
Let's Get Weird.
Talk about a blast from the past...a post started by me, resurrected 8.5 years later. That's over 1/3 if my life ago. lol
I have since graduated from high school, worked at CP for 2 summers (one of them being on Magnum), had various engineering internships, graduated from college with a Civil Engineering degree, and now am starting a career. Crazy. Maybe if I come back around to discuss a structural failure people will listen to me...nevermind, I know they won't. ;)
Anyway...I would have to say my favorite memories have to come from the summer of 2005 when I became 3rd-in-charge of Magnum. We never got cliquey, but when we showed up to work we opened as early as possible and packed the trains better than any other crew in the park. I think we hit 2.1 million riders that year, which hasn't been topped since. After that year they started making operational changes that have inhibited its capacity, unfortunately.
Anytime I get a trimless ride on Magnum definitely is a highlight of the trip and reaffirms my belief that it's the best coaster in the world.

That was 2004 Gannon! :) And we did rock. I'm pretty sure if we actually had riders at the beginning/end of the day we'd have had the highest numbers ever.

The memory that I have of Magnum was last year watching the two trains crash into each other over Memorial Day weekend. I saw the whole thing happen. I was about the fourth person in line for the front, and I watched one of the trains as it slipped through the brakes. After that I was thinking oh crap its gonna hit the train stopped outside of the station. Then boom it happened and everyone was jolted forward and some of the people in the front got hurt. I was completely stunned it happened, and there was a dead silence for about 10 seconds in the station. By the way, I was the one who took those pictures that were on here awhile back.

Oh yeah, my bad, it was 2004. It sure doesn't feel like it was 4 years ago...

I can remember being 9 (1989) years old when Magnum opened to the public. I wasn't able to ride it until I was 11 (1991). I was completely blown away by its size. After riding it, my mind and body were completely blown away. About 200 rides later, I still get the same reaction!!!!!! What a great ride!! The view of Lake Erie, the hills, the air-time, the tunnels........EVERYTHING about this ride stilll kicks ass!!!!!!! One of THE BEST rides I have EVER been on!!!!!!!! Hope it never leaves CP!! Arrow Dynamics really nailed it on the head with this ride:)
Sorry, hate to bring up an old thread but I love this Magnum history video! Right when it first opened!
Magnum will always be in my top 3 at CP and I hope and am sure it will last another 10 years!
Magnum is as iconic to CP as the Blue Streak is. Arguably, it is one of the most famous coasters in the world. It needs to stay forever.
I'd rather be in my boat with a drink on the rocks,
than in the drink with a boat on the rocks.
Would it be too blasphemous to ask that the old girl gets some new/refurbished trains?
New for 2024- Wicked Twister Plus
I could see Magnum getting new trains eventually, but that coaster will exist as long as Cedar Point exists.
My hubby and I had our first date at Cedar Point in June of 1989 and the first ride we rode together was Magnum. We married in 1991 and spent our honeymoon at CP. Twenty years later on June 25, 2011 we renewed our vows in the first car of a train at the station. She absolutely needs to stay where she is forever. :)
I love the out of control feeling I get while riding Magnum. The first drop is always great and that 3rd hill always provides great airtime. While I agree that the current trains are clunky and not the most comfortable, they add to that out of control feeling you get, especially when coupled with Arrow Dynamics odd transitions. It's a ride that has plenty of character, something a lot of modern rides are missing. While new trains could possibly help smooth the ride out and make it more enjoyable for a larger number of people, the current trains work fine (for me at least) and I just love the chaotic experience I get on Magnum.
New for 2018... RMC Iron Horse!!!
I went to Cedar Point for after prom junior year 1989 with a guy supposedly as friends. I found out part way through prom he wanted to be more than friends and a friend of mine who was dating his best friend had been keeping that piece of info from me. So the rest of the evening and the whole day at CP was a bit awkward. Me and my friend wanted to ride Magnum. My date looked at it and nervously made some comments about it being awfully tall and I said that was the whole point and long story short he didn't ride Magnum with me and never got out of the friend zone. I hope he found some nice girl that didn't care for airtime.
Nothing wrong with resurrecting a thread during Halloweekends. It's "The Walking Thread"...
Magnum will always hold a special place in my coaster-heart, as it was the ride that introduced me to what a phobia is. I was 12 years old when it debuted, and came up with some of the most elaborate excuses to avoid getting on it for nearly 6 seasons. At the time, that was extraordinarily annoying (not to mention somewhat embarassing), but everything happens for a reason, and that battle with anxiety has ended up being a blessing in disguise.
Promoter of fog.
I remember closing my eyes for the first drop on many rides, until Magnum.
I opened my eyes halfway down because I was sure it was over. Apparently, I was wrong. And the "force of the wind" prevented me from closing my eyes again.
Magnum should really stay forever, or as long as the structure is workable. Maybe new trains someday, like Steel Dragon 2000 (though that was Morgan, not Arrow) for what it's worth. Those B&M 2 seater trains do look interesting on Steel Dragon.
