Jeff - You illustrated my point very nicely for me. Thanks! If the lenses are getting dirty, clean them. If the seals are deteriorating, get replacement ones from the manufacturer under warranty. Like I said, if you can't afford lighting that requires maintenance, why even put it in? Aren't there issues with the control system on those lights too?
I always wondered though if those really bright "beams" of light were... kinda blinding on the way down the tower. Never got a chance to ride at night when they had those.
Dragster has those banners all along the side of the launch track to give the illusion that you're moving a lot faster than you really are. If they had dim-ish "lantern" lights on the sides of the tunnels wall, shouldn't that give off the same effect?

When TTD first opened, the two spotlights were turned off only a couple of weeks in. In late July or early August the lights were back, and they were said to be moved a bit to get out of the eyes of riders.
I don't believe the lights have been on since closing day 2003.

What do you think they did?

That still doesn't fix the lense problem. Once they get dirty the visible amount of output decreases greatly. I should know, I just cleaned nearly 300 instruments last week.

The bottom line is this: it doesn't matter if theres dust on the lens, or inflation or whatnot. This isn't some fly by night company we're talking about, its Cedar Point. They should know by now what to expect and calculate fluctuations into their budgets. Granted, you can't prepare for everything, but its not like the stock market crashed, Cedar Point can be better prepared for fluctuations and inflation, resulting in better upkeep of theming, lighting, and any other areas of the park that have seen better days.
I'm not saying CP is neglectful of their rides, but as many have pointed out, they certainly could be doing better. Great rides are great because of every aspect of the ride, and lighting, scenery, and theming all are part of what makes the ride work.

Very true. Maybe if they could open a contract with a specific manufacturer for lighting or other things then they could get some kind of bulk deal or warranty.
Too bad that after a year, they will let the lighting package burn out and never replace them.
This will occur just after the water-effects stop working, and the fake rocks start to show wear.
By this time, Kinzel will be too busy spending money on the new project to care about keeping it up...
