It makes sense to me. They aren't busy the first few weeks of the operating season - It costs a lot of money to pay crews to run your rides. Shorten that up, and theoretically you should cut costs and hopefully not lose guests. I don't think many of you will even miss the extra week(s)
Remember when early May weekdays were empty? That hasn't happened since they started opening the second weekend in May. Now with it being the third weekend all of those school trips have to be scheduled in even less time.
We'll miss you MrScott and Pete
I suspect the opening date has everything to do with when colleges get out of school. With the way the calendar falls in 2009, exam week for most colleges is going to be May 4-8, which would make it pretty hard for most of the seasonal staff to be there for May 9th. Also, looking forward on the calendar, I suspect the park will go back to only having 7 Halloweekends next year due to a much later than usual Labor Day.
But back on topic, it is quite sad to see the season go. For me, not because the park is closed, but because I will no longer be seeing so many of the people I've worked with who have become like family over the summer.
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun
Looking at when Labour Day is makes the May 16 opening date more understandable.
We'll miss you MrScott and Pete
For what it's worth, the last time Cedar Point opened this late in May was 1981.

They're going to point it towards D.C. for 2009?
Well, just might have to wait a little longer to go on the rides....I already have the itch to go on them, and it's just November...Sad. But, ya, Halloweekends will probably extend again 2009 year.
gotta go, bye.
I hope they keep it open like this year! I really enjoyed having a few more times to go before the wether turned toward old man winter. I also loved how pretty the last weekend was with all the trees being so colorful! I like the fact that this year I got to go in November which makes it on month less I have to wait until May! I wish they would open for Spring breaks in April, but I know Ohio weather does not make it easy to do that, but I can have wishful thinking!
Life is like a rollercoaster! It is full of ups and downs
