"internet-ready" dorms?

Okay so... my friend interviewed today with Cedar Point and the guy she interviewed with (Mike Nelson, I believe, because she is working Park Op) was telling her something about the newer dorms being "internet-ready"? What do they mean by that? I was just planning to get crappy $10 dial-up to use occasionally with my laptop, but is there a better option? and which dorms are these?

Chances are.. it only means that they have teh call-waiting feature disabled so that you don't have to worry about being knocked off..

The current system runs you through the CP PBX and teh standard ways of turning off call waiting do not work though them.

I don't see them re-wireing the ENTIRE dorm for cat-5 and allowing access to thier already overloaded bandwidth.

Since the off-point dorms already have cable for TV, would it be possible to allow cable modems to be used? I guess it is really something that Time Warner (or whatever they're calling themselves this week) would have to set up.

Jon

At $40 per connection a month? Who's gonna pick up the tab?

The reason Buckeye-express won't allow you to set up a cable modem accoutn with them is multi-fold.

#1. It's not your residence.
#2. The building technically is part of a bussiness and thier rates increase anyways then.
#3. The very nature of how people are move, quit and fired at CP would make billing a nightmare. What if the person who has the account moves out or is fired? Pain in the but to move the filters to the new dorm and if they leave, then they have to hunt them down for the bill.

.. not that I looked into any of this last year ;)

At the density found in dorm housing, 802.11 would be tricky, particularly with the flash crowds you'd get on e.g. park closing.
LiveEJon, they would have to use CAT 5 cable from the the cable modem to the rooms for you to get an internet connection. Also people in one room can't have their own cable modem because most of the time a booster is required on the cable line for it to handle a cable modem. Wireless could be a possibility because I know some dorms at colleges are going wireless. From what I here don't expect much in the way of internet at Cedar Point. Are there any coffee shops or internet cafes in Sandusky that you could pay to use the internet?
I read, I think it was on cedar point's offical site that the Sandusky Public Library welcomes all CP employees to use the internet and isn't there a computer of some sort in the Rec. Lounge? Just something I thought would help.

I was waiting for an appropriate time to post this. . .and the time is at hand. :)

Where is the nearest Borders to Cedar Point? (I am guessing not too close. . .so this probably doesn't matter, but it's cool all the same.)

Borders stores are beginning to be "wireless ready," so you can come in with your PDA, cellphone, or laptop, go to certain "hotspot" areas, and use free internet.

Which I think is very cool.

If quizzes are quizzical, what are tests?

you'd have to have a different cable hookup than just for normal TV...because they bill it seperate and hooking up the modem to normal cable wont work...hehe, i tried it ;)

In all honesty I went home to use the internet about once a week at the most. Besides that i was working so late that i didnt even think about it, and during the off season im the biggest net junky of them all. The best bet for anybody wanting to use the internet is the sandusky library (call for availability) or just learn to ween yourself from it for the summer like i did. i found that the nearest borders is here in westlake (close to cleveland and where i live) and if i remember they were not offering free wireless networking yet. Like i said wait for a computer in the rec center (hours on your day off) or go to the library, but dont expect to have it be like your college dorm room where you turn on your computer to the internet when you get home every night. and everynow and then after the occational O-C (feels like a 40 hr. work DAY) you will want to sleep and not sit on your computer.

I think I said this before, although this would be stealing.

I think in Cedar Point's Corporate Offices there is a network....

If they have a regular 56k modem, along with the T1 connection on their servers that you could dial into you'd be all set... But you'd have to have experience to do it.

What I would do is bring my cell phone with my wireless modem kit, and go from there.

You know, I thought about the Sprint network card thing, but how strong is Sprint service in Sandusky? Strong enough to use wireless?

The only reason I really want internet that badly is because I have another job that I am *hoping* to keep, with a bi-monthly newspaper... they sometimes email me ads to design or stories to write and then I email then back the next day... just a few hours here and there, nothing major, but it means I need internet to get the stuff on my laptop.

I think I'll call and ask what the deal is on Monday, but thanks guys! ;)

There is a place on the west side of Sandusky (on rte 6 west) that offers computer time for free up to 1 hr (internet included). It's called Digital Print. They only have a couple of computers though. 1 IBM and 1 Mac.

Actually, setting up cable internet wouldn't be worth it...because the cable internet up here is one-way. In other words, you connect through the cable modem for download and the phone line for upload at the same time. However, if Time Warner would bring Roadrunner to Sandusky, wiring coax connections to all the rooms wouldn't really be such a task. They wired a 300-apartment complex I lived in, in Columbus, in a few weeks. It would be a good feature to have in certain rooms, at an added cost, if it were two-way digital cable internet.

Actually, setting up 802.11b and a single T1 connection would be expensive and the network would probably STILL be slow with that large of a group...but it would be convenient as heck for the residents. I'm gonna hate switching back to dial-up if Tabie and I decide to get a bayside this year.

Sandusky is supposed to get the 2-way cable this summer.. Whole town is supposed to be done by fall..

Of course.. they said that it would be 2-way last fall.

crash: dialing in from a phone line into a T1 doesn't give you any speed increase, the bottleneck is the phone/modem medium.

Actually, setting up 802.11b and a single T1 connection would be expensive and the network would probably STILL be slow with that large of a group...

No, it's an almost dead simple process. I highly doubt there would be enough 802.11 users to bog down the connection that badly. I installed a bunch of access points at my Uni.

I myself have a new phone with Verizon with 128k connectivity, so that'll be more than enough to use as a connection- it's still twice as fast as dial-up. All I do on the 'net over the summer anyhow is IM and write EMails occasionally. That said, dial-up isn't that bad for these purposes, but it does make browsing a bit painful if you're used to speedy connections. Really not a big deal though.
