How much do you get paid?

Before the foreign exchange program the park was desperate for ways to fill the positions. There was talk of bussing people from Louisana (with a high unemployment rate) up to the park every year. There was even talk about exploring prison work release programs for some of the non-guest interaction positions.

There is also the program where school groups and other service organizations can work in the fall and get donations to their causes.

How much do you get paid ??? Not Enough... Got to have More Beer and Food Money... HaHa !!!
Can you imagine a roller coaster crew manned by toothless illiterate trailer park tinas from Alabama or Lousiana? The result would be the same as employing illiterate draftees in the Viet Nam war. Only the KIA would be able to sue FUN for supreme ignorance and win big! I am glad that idea did not see the light of day and was relegated to the dustbin of history/really bad ideas.
sigh. CP doesnt fly the foreigners over, they get their own ticket and come themselves.

The 25% diversity thing was in some employee manual that also said 1 in 4 workers is from a foreign country.

And a simple marketing plan would ensure they could fill every position all summer long if there were no foreigners. Hell i had no clue such a thing existed till 2 weeks before i came. I surely wouldve done it years earlier if i had known...and i live in new york.

i highly doubt they were so hard pressed for employees that they felt the need to go overseas considering there are 300 million people in the US.

It has alot to do with the diversity. Think any of those rednecks will ever come in contact with a person from slovakia or poland again in their lives? probably not. Think a bunch of them went home and said "wow, they had people all the way from russia working there." yes.

maybe this is a very conservative comment, but damn just accept things as they are. They want diversity. no ulterior motives here.

kinda wondering how many applicants never even get hired, 5,000? 10,000? 15,000? more?

ps... 'talk' of bussing workers up from other states. riiiight, and there is also 'talk' of tearing down cedars to put in a hotel. 'talk' of putting a monorail to a parking lot in downtown sandusky. 'talk' of a 450ft 120 mph coaster. 'talk' of giving an $ raise per hour and a $2 bonus. 'talk' is grand. o wait, grand...yah thats what we're gonna get paid per hour next year. hahah.

I'll say it one more time and then I am done. It has NOTHING to do with diversity. Yes, they fly all the way over to Europe because they cannot find enough people here in the States to do the job. That is fact, not just opinion.

It is fairly easy to fill all of the rides jobs, it is the foods, custodial, housekeeping, etc type jobs that American kids don't seem to want to bother with. Think about it, they could flip burgers at home if they wanted to.

They "market" the crap out of their positions. They advertise that they are coming to college campuses, the major papers run stories each year about the number of people it takes to staff the park, they run radio ads.

It used to be that CP would go to a campus like Ohio State and hundreds and hundreds of kids would show up to be interviewed. Now, they are happy if they get 50-100 kids showing up for interviews. Of those, at least 1/4 hear about the pay and write it off.

Now, I will admit that a fringe benefit of being forced to look overseas for help was that they found those kids, overall, to be harder workers and more polite than the American kids.

One other thing, it is FACT, not rumor, that they looked at bussing people from southern states where the unemployment rate was higher.

Simple marketing plan? You mean besides the recruiting tours and media buys?

They do it because they need the people, period. Recruiting overseas and dealing with the additional administrative costs of hiring foreign workers is not so they can say they have foreign workers, especially since I'd wager to guess that's not a selling point in our current period of flag-waving.

CP would be lucky if half those people could read and had 10 teeth in the whole lot! VERY BAD IDEA!

And when you engage in the concept of "grey hound therapy", you are supposed to bus the problem people OUT to california or key west, florida! Not bring in a major crime wave/gene pool contaminent contingent!

like i said, i had no idea such a program existed. obviously it could've been marketed a little bit more. Maybe by adding a quick little line to the end of one of those "get to the point" commercials.

Wow. Nothing like fueling stereotypes. Not everyone from the south is a poor uneducated toothless bumpkin. I consider my self as being from the south and take great offense to some of the previous comments. I started working at Cedar Point because the unemployment rate down here is astronomical and Cedar Point is a wonderful job when you haven't had one or have had no luck in finding one. I am absolutely amazed that employees that were so supportive of our international employees turned up their noses at the thought of someone from the south coming up and working at the park. It almost seems hypocritical. I've always tried to be halfway funny in my posts, but not this time. Those insensitive comments burned and were uncalled for. All employees, no matter where they have come from, should be treated with all the respect in the world. Okay now that I probably just pi**ed off several people, go ahead flame me all you want. I'm going to step down off my soap box and let you do your worst.

Obviously they wouldn't, or they wouldn't be flying people all over the world to find people to work in Sandusky, Ohio. My local fast food joints have soccer moms and retired people working during the summer. Why do you suppose that is? Heck, Disney parks and even BGW have the same.

There have been some interesting articles in the NY Times recently (as in, within the past year) stating that Today's Youth aren't as willing to take the jobs that they have traditionally filled in the past. The articles usually go on to speculate why that might be. I won't repeat such speculations here so as to not unfairly characterize the folks that do work at the park who obviously don't mind hard work.
Obviously this is going nowhere. Dont quite know if this is a debate or a spiteful flame towards someone who is throwing out a few different points instead of the same old tired jokes you guys are.

Its sad that you cant accept something at face value. The foreigners are there because they bring diversity into the park. Are there reasons CP wants their park to be diverse? probably are. In this day and age, is diversity a wise business decision? sure is. And do you think the few bucks they spend sending faxes and information to employment agencies overseas is a tiny disposable business expense they dont even worry about? you betcha.

Maybe you enthusiasts know about the jobs but i guarentee the general public does not. If CP really wanted 100% of the positions to be filled by Americans, trust me...they'd find a way to do so.

Try tackling this one... If it isnt about diversity, wouldnt it be alot easier to recruit in Canada? As far as i can remember, there was only 1 girl from canada. sure, probably a couple i didnt know. Which would pretty much make it 500 to 1 polish. doesnt make too much sense does it ;)

If you want to debate, then debate. If you only want to flame, because your cedarpoint undies are getting ruffled and you think you know all...then do everyone a favor and close this thread.

In the early 90's the economy was in a recession. There were few jobs available, so people [particularly teens and young adults] started taking whatever they could get. As the economy grew into the later 90’s, there were more higher paying jobs that caused migration from the lower paying jobs. Even though the economy hasn’t been it’s best lately, doesn’t mean that people aren't still pressuring higher paying jobs.

Diversity does not matter. Plain and simple. Cedar Point has it so they market it. They didn't have a meeting and decide. I think that we should hire some foreign kids, and slap 25% diverse on a publication. That will bring them running in! NO. If I remember right, if I don't let me know. Cedar Point gets a certain amount of money for bringing them overseas, and so does the agency. Its a win win situation for all parties involved.

In the early 90's ...

My experience filling those jobs goes back to the early 80's, thanks. I (and all my friends) worked jobs in the low-end service sector all the time. I was a golf caddy, spun pizza dough, etc. etc. We didn't think of it as the best job we could get, it was just the norm.

Mind you, these were students at the la-de-dah private schools in town, and later, kids living in Palo Alto. We weren't doing this to help feed the family; it was pocket money.

Today, many (not all!) kids look down at jobs at, say, McDonalds, and feel those jobs are beneath them somehow. There is a noticeable cultural shift away from viewing low-end, entry-level jobs as even remotely desirable at any stage of one's working life.

In addition to a general unwillingness to take low-end service jobs, the Times also found that a lower percentage of teenagers generally worked. One reason cited was: when kids (and their parents) belive they have to get A's in all of their classes, 1550 on their SATs, and a list of extracurricular activities as long as your arm to get into Hahvahd, and anything less is failure, then the part-time job is seen as a distraction.


...Canada...
Canada's economy is not that drastically different from our own. There is less economic incentive for a Canadian teen to come down to the States to work. On the other hand, Eastern European economies are still struggling with the concept of a "market". The pittance that CP pays the local kids looks like a fortune in that context.

Face value? What the hell are you talking about? Human resources are among your biggest costs in any company, what possible business decision would encourage them to spend more on recruiting (internationally)? Just to say they did? That's not logical.

For whatever reason Cedar Point hires foreign students to come work for the season, I appreciate them being there. I work in the Admissions department, where we have many, many international employees. Talking with them has opened my eyes about many things I had previously only considered with an American perspective. If you work or (especially) live with several of them who are from the same nation, it can be like studying abroad from the comfort of home, since they use the same language and customs when they are together. I've gotten to practice my Spanish with several international employees from Columbia, and learned about Polish food and economics, not to mention how to say "hello" in various languages. Along the same lines, it's interesting getting to explain the "finer points" of the English language to someone who's really interested and willing to learn. My experiences with international employees have made my summers at the Point all the more unique and memorable.

exactly... its not logical. Its not logical to spend money getting people to come from overseas when you can spend less and get kids from right here at home. Therefore there must be another reason for them wanting to employ foreigners.

btw... canadian minimum wage is $6 canadian and some change. So about $4 american. and thats if youre old enough. dont know what the age limit is tho. That along with the astronomical tax rate (15% gst sales tax plus whatever rediculous amount the wage taxes are because its funding their universal health care) i dont know, call me ignorant, but seems as if a few more than 5 people would find it lucrative enough to head down to the good ol us of a for a fun summer job.... IF they knew about it!

oh, another thing... i do recall a few foreign friends of mine having issues with the fact that they spent $2,000 to get here but werent making as much money as they hoped.

I asked one if she came to make money and go home 'rich'... she said the extra money is nice, but she came for the experience. Also added that the only things cheaper over there are food and alcohol. whereas cars and clothes cost considerably more, especially taking into account they make much less.

CP is hardly a mecca for eastern europeans looking to cash in on the riches of the west.

Just for reference on extra hours. Of course I have had to deal with this so many times I can't count. They are not promise so many hours a week, but an average of so many hours a week. I explain this to my employees each year, they make up those hours in August and September when everyone else starts to leave.
