How do you guys avoid the toll roads?

The turnpike is the easy part, it's the drive between Toledo and Detroit that is killer.

The best solution is to just move to Sandusky and avoid the state and interstate highways completely. ;)

I'm not saying one road is specifically more deadly than another. But given the choice, I'd much rather be on an interstate than a narrow country road.

I like taking route 2 home because on the way back my boyfriend and I can stop at Phantom Fireworks (they don't have that kind of quality fireworks in Michigan), it's really a cool store.

The reason they don't have that "quality" is that 90% of whats in that store is illegal to possess and sell in Michigan. It is actually illegal to set off in Ohio, but they are allowed to sell it if you promise to take it out of the state within 24 hours (if I'm wrong someone correct me).

And you can stop at a Phantom Fireworks if you take the turn-pike, you just get off at an exit by the border once you're back on I-75.

ILLEGAL IN MI FIREWORKS :)

I continue to take Route 2, although the past couple years it was fine because I was working third shifts, and was driving to the point at 3 pm in the afternoon and driving home at 11am, both on a week day. Now that I don't have that luxery, I may be driving down during more 'peak' times, and may opt for the turnpike.

And Route 2 is not really a 'Narrow Country Road' as you put it Walt. It's not a 6 lane interstate, but it's definitely not narrow. There's a lot of roads in Tennessee that would qualify a lot more for narrow country roads. (A lot of roads down there don't even have shoulders)

Not true Ben. All Tennessee roads have shoulders, its just that sometimes they are a few hundred feet below road level.

Ok Smarty Pants. I actually really have seen roads without shoulders.

If you're coming from Illinois or Northern Indiana, it looks like there will be a good deal of construction on I-80/99 Indiana Toll Road - https://www.getizoom.com/roadInfo/docs/const_map.pdf

Just a heads up. We may have to try the more direct route of US 24 over to Ft. Wayne and cut up from there. We shall see.

I know exactly what you are talking about. Maybe this is why Route 2 never scared me! Its actually better than a lot of roads I drive every day on my way to work!

I cant avoid the toll roads. I have to take pa 76 to I 80 and then the Ohio Turnpike for 100 miles. After the rye beach road onto 57 then to 6 i think 2 might be in there somewhere but im not sure, i just know the route.
