How do you guys avoid the toll roads?

Coming from Michigan we take US-23 to finally 80/90 and we would like to avoid the toll roads there.

Anyone have any favorite routes they prefer? The toll is only a dollar or two but every dollar saved is...a dollar saved.

Take US 23 South to I-475 East
to I-75 North to I-280 South to Route 2 East.
The new I-280 Veteran's Skyway Bridge, cuts 15 minutes
off the drive to Route 2, and is a Beautiful Bridge.
- I personally take route 51 (Woodville Road) to
Route 2 East, But from Michigan,
Route 2 - Navarre is good enough. There are a lot of
4 lane highways then down to 2 lane then back to 4
on Navarre (Route 2). (I hope I got that right):)
(sorry got east and west route 2 mixed up)

The extra 4 bucks on the turnpike is worth not dieing on Route 2.

PB is right, that's the route I take from downriver in Michigan. When you get to Route 2 make a left because it looks like just a regular city road when you get off the exit. It will take you all the way to Cedar Point. Watch for signs, you should have no problems. :)

And yes, I agree the reconstruction of I-280 bridge is beautiful.

Personally, my time is worth more than a few bucks. :)

Yeah really, you're going to spend more in gas avoiding the tolls, which means less time at the park!

Actually I found it shaves about 10-15 minutes off the drive time if I do avoid the toll roads.

From Akron, I take OH turnpike to 57, to route 2, then to rye beach rd. It saves a few minutes on time and on money from getting off the turnpike early. Plus, for those late nights driving home from the point, it is easier to stay awake when you know you have to make an exit, rather than just staying on one road for a long time.

If you are coming from anywhere in Toledo or north of it, Route 2 is about 20 minutes faster than the Turnpike. Especially if you get off of Route 2 onto Route 6 or 101 when you get to Sandusky instead of going all the way down to 250.

I disagree. It's shorter, but almost inevitably slower, by at least 10-15 minutes. Although, if you adhere very strictly to the speed limit, then yeah, you're not saving much more than that.

I dont avoid it, I live in Perrysburg right on 1-475, so its just easier for me to catch 90/80 at I-75 then go up to 2 and then have to go through half of Toledo before the road becomes fast again. $4.00 total for tolls is not bad, especially since I travel late at night/early morning and I know that eyes are always watching the pike (in case I have a crash) and (most importantly) bathrooms are open.

Be a daredevil take route2

Why? Its easier, more convient, and I get much, much less red lights taking the pike. With all the congestion around Toledo too it takes me 10 min just to get Rt 2 anyways going up 75 (the 55mph speed limit doesnt help.) Again in the long run, its worth $4 of my money to just avoid it all.

If you live near the Turnpike, it's certainly faster than making the trip across town. But if you're coming from the north, northwest, or east side of town, Route 2 definitely saves time. Plus, personally, the turnpike at night tends to put me to sleep. I can stay awake easier on 2.

See, going across to Grand Rapids at night, I'm on the highway all the way anyway, so taking the turnpike is much nicer. Plus, usually after leaving work, I'm ready for a pit stop at the second rest area on the pike that we pass. Stop, stretch a bit, grab a drink or a quick bite if necessary, then hit the last 20-30 minutes of the drive.

Being on a six-lane highway versus a two-lane suicide mission is worth fifteen minutes of my time. Even if I survive the two-lane adventure, I would inevitably be stuck behind someone, or be one of three cars some idiot passes at the same time.

I have always taken the turnpike. The time doesn't bother me and the toll isn't going to affect me.

seriously take the pike unless you have a death wish a couple dollars is worth more than your life. i went the day after the last big wreck on 2 and got to see the aftermath of it. they were still cleaning up.

I don't really buy that Route 2 is more deadly than the turnpike. Once every year or two it seems there is one big wreck on Route 2 that gets a lot of attention, but there are plenty of deadly crashes on the turnpike that go much more unnoticed. The two lane section of Route 2 only lasts for about 15 miles, so it's not like it goes on for hours. Besides, falling asleep at the wheel is much more likely to result in death. I just can't do the turnpike at night. It's perfectly straight and every mile looks the same. Puts me to sleep every time.

I'm not saying any preference is better than the other. I have my reasons for driving Route 2, just as others have reasons for taking the turnpike. The question was how do you avoid the toll roads, I gave an answer.
