Higher Food Prices in 2008

I saw the wife for lunch today and asked her how much she thought was too much for 1/2 sub, chips and a drink. She said she wouldn't go any higher than $8. I told her, "hey, how about $14".

She, like me, is a fomer full time employee (in fact, she was there quite a bit longer than I was). But, when she heard that even she said we might skip taking the kid over there this year when we come up. If we do come over there is NO way I am having a substantial meal there. And, I'll be honest, as a share holder I don't mind supporting the company.

It will be interesting to see how things play out.

I'm afraid to even ask....

Has anyone had a beer in the park this year? How much are they charging for that?

$20...but hey, you get to drink it in line!

(Just kidding. If they are smart they sell the beer cheap so you get so stinking drunk that you don't realize what you are spending on the food. Beer goggles for hamburgers. Everything seems better with a LOT of beer.)

Anyone here ever heard of Faust & Lewis? They were famed (to a degree) for performing over on Put-In-Bay. We actually saw them down in Key West by chance when we were down there. A good example of what beer can do. I was pretty hammered during their show and bought a bunch of their CDs. (I think they rely on that actually.) A few weeks later when we were sobered up I stuck one in the stereo and was like, "what the hell is THIS?"

I'm sure some of the old timers in the Sandusky area know these guys.

In any event, they are coming back for a reunion:

Whenever I go with the family I give my mom $10-$15 to go the supermarket to buy hoagie rolls, lettuce, cheese and lunch meat to make sandwiches for me, the wife and the two kids. (Nothing tastes like a mom-made sammich ;))We stick them in a cooler along with the some cool, tasty beverages and a blanket. Around lunch time we go out to the car (we park at Soak City) grab all that stuff and sit in the shade of a nice tree. We might get an order of fries on the way out to have as well. Ususally right before we leave the kids will get ice cream. Last year we got it from the ice cream place in the back near the shooting gallery and arcade. Total cost for the day on food items in the park $10-$15. I guess I'm frugal.

Going out to the car for lunch accomplishes two things, it allows for a nice break during the day and it saves us, according to what I've seen here, around $50.

We also take some bottles of water into the park and then just refill them at a water fountain when they get empty. Since the wife doesn't ride much she holds the bottles while I ride with the kids. Do they still allow unopened bottles of water into the park?

Since someone asked...

The 20-ounce drink price is $3.00 from the vending machines, but the 22-ounce fountain drinks (smallest size available) are $3.59.

They passed my top end threshold a long time ago. The fact that they only serve Pepsi products makes it even easier for me to say "no".

Hey, Faust & Lewis are great! If you have a song on one of your CDs called "Save The Beer", listen to it if you didn't already. Funny stuff.

Thanks for posting the schedule, I'll be sure to make it to at least one of the shows.

I agree with every one else that the food prices at CP are getting out of hand. Last September I went to Florda and at Busch Gardens Tampa I had the BBQ platter from Zambia Smokehouse. It was Ribs, Chicken, Brisket, Corn on the Cob, Grapes (or Fries) and a Roll for for Under $15 and it was one of the best counter service meals I've ever had at an amusement park. They had a queue line for people to wait in but were serving from 4 lines so they could serve a large number of people quickly.

Oh man, now I'm hungry. That sounds good. Dollywood has GREAT food at very reasonable prices. And honestly, Disney's food has improved in the past 10 years. As a parent I like that they are offering more healthy alternatives.

If you're ever at Busch in Williamsburg, check out the Italian place. They make the pasta there, and it's not some watery mass-produced crap. Very good, very reasonable and they offer beer and wine with it. Really awesome stuff. Busch does food right.

Beer was like $5.99, $6.99 and refillable (yes i thought unlimited refills and bought this cup) cup for $7. The refillable cup had sharp edges and gave me a canker sore I swear.

^Maybe you should be carefull who you kiss! :-)

It has been a LONG time since I was at BGW but I do remember the food being good there. In fact, I specifically remember a piece of chocolate cake that was as big as my head. I mean, it was several layers and was SO good.

Refills on beer? Please explain.....

^^^As of two years ago, that cake is still there and fantastic. That was my home park for a year when I lived in DC. It was always a hard choice to pick between the Festhaus (Turkey sandwich on apple wheat bread) or the BBQ place (best Rotisserie Chicken I have had) usually it came down to the weather, Festhaus had indoor seating, BBQ was outdoors. Both were equally fantastic (and I always finished it off with a slice of said cake.)
Most of the time I would have a snack that night too, so even with the packed lunch I would bring to the park I would spend >$30 there everytime I went.

At CP last Saturday: $14.50

I dont mind spending more money for good food, but gosh darn it, I expect good food.

Sea World of Ohio also had the cake, great stuff! Matter of fact, one of the best things about Sea World after Busch bought it was the food. Some really good stuff could be found all over the park at reasonable prices.

I just did some research, and it looks like the Kosher Subway is in fact not only cheaper than the photo that was posted, but much cheaper! It looks like the Kosher store is around $2 cheaper per sub for similar subs. Hopefully I can take photos at both stores and post them for you to compare.

The thing is that I bet the food costs for the Kosher store are probably significantly higher because of the Kosher meat and the non-dairy cheese they use. If I go to the Kosher store, I can get a footlong Chicken for $8.99. Not cheap, but for a specialty product that is high in quality, I can stomach that. Plus, they don't charge $6 to "make it a meal."

I want to swing by the Kosher store later this morning to check it out and hopefully take some photos of the menu if they let me.

John McCain: The Ride

Being Mavericky since 2007!

At $4.30 per gallon for diesel fuel at about 6 mpg, it's no wonder prices are going up everywhere. Especially in a place that is strictly for entertainment, especially when customers want them to spend $20 million + on a new ride every few years. Especially in a place that MIGHT get 3 months of good weather and maybe another 2 months of crappy weather. Especially when they are in the middle of an area hard hit by this terrible economy. Neighborhoods with $300 to $400,000 homes are being abandoned up near me and this used to be CP's primary customer base.

I just paid $18 for tickets to see a movie for 2 and bought 2 large drinks which ended up totaling over $10. $28 for 2 to see a movie with 2 large drinks. Just imagine how much it would cost if i had bought snacks too.

All I know is that I want them to make money and be able to keep this their flagship park so we can get the best of everything here. Those that have a problem paying for food in the park, take your parking receipt to Famous Dave's and get it taken off of your bill there.

It all boils down to them needing to make money to be able to justify spending the big bucks on CP.

Yes, they are a business and should not be expected to NOT make money. But come on...really...there is absolutely NO WAY IN THE WORLD you can justify $14 for a six inch sub, a bag of chips and a 22 oz soda.

Let's be REALLY liberal and say the costs to Cedar Point are: Chips: $1, Soda $1.50 and the Sub $4.00. Again, I know even those numbers are extremely high but just to use the example. So, total food costs is $6.50. Let's take on $2 for the labor. Again...FAR higher than it actually is. So, total cost (very, very liberal) is $8.50. They are making $5.50 in profit off that meal. More if you consider the soda is really about $.50 and the chips are less too.

How "family friendly" does that strike you?

I'll give them this: the per caps will be up but let's see how often the family returns this year...or even if they will come back at all next year.

Sam - and don't forget, Kosher is more than just the food. The utensils, prep and cooking area are all specially cleansed. It's more than just buying kosher meats and bread and putting them together.
