Heartline Removed!

I don't think the problem is simply the curvature of the track at the given speed is too great. That would be an easy problem to spot. I think it's an induced acceleration from amount of track movement and the inability for the supports to move. This causes the train to snap as it approches the support. Since the train is moving so fast, the force acts impulsively. This results in an acceleration spike that is good enough to fatigue the supports, track, and train excessively.

I think there is now objective evidence to the cutting issue.

In this pic you can see that when all was said and done, they left the piece cantilevered.

This would indicate to me that the cut was made for ease of removal and not for structural failure concerns.

Although the heartline roll was my favorite statistic of Maverick, it is still safer for the public. The S-curve is a little monotonous, but there still is the surprise around the tunnel.

Best.Picture.Ever.....We now have three engineers on the wagon for its being cut for ease of removal. Some of the bias and functional fixedness in this thread is alarming! *** Edited 5/18/2007 5:20:24 AM UTC by Existentialist***

It would be really cool if they melted down the pieces of track not in use and made little stuff out of them. They could sell them in the gift shop. Plus it would be awesome.

This dissapoints me, but if its for the better than i'm sure it will work out fine, it better be a good S-curve though. Removing the heartline roll makes the OTSR's just that much more pointless though.

Yes it does..maybe if they put lapbars similar to millennium and TTD..it would be a great experience..Your right Gam man 68..they dont really need the OTSR's. now.

Total Maverick rides for the 2007 season = 27

Top 5--- 1. Maverick- 2. Millennium 3. Magnum 4. TTD 5. Gemini

the inversions wern't the only reason for OTSR's. CP didn't want yet another ride that many people wouldn't be able to ride due to size issues. The fact is that OTSR's can be more accommodating than Lapbars. I have no problem on MF or TTD. I much prefer the Lapbars. But I'm glad this has OTSR's if for nothing else but to appease these people for once.

UGH! I still can't believe after all that engineering they have to remove the heartline roll. One could hope that in the future maybe they can re-engineer this section to make the heartline roll be added back into it.

Have any coasters at major parks ever had re-designs this late in the game? It just seems odd (read: poorly planned).

Magnum and Gemini both had hills redone AFTER they opened. I think it was first off-season on both of them.

^^^ I can't imagine that there would be any ROI in doing that.

Arrow played with Magnum's third hill for many years after it opened. I as I recall, the problem was finally fixed 3 or 4 years after Maggie opened with a major face lift of the hill. Ehj, I agree there appears to be enough room to elongate the hearline, but suspect (guess) new footers would need to be poured delaying the opening even longer. I think they went for the quickest fix to get it open and continue to wonder if more work will be done in the off season (at no cost to CP of course).

I highly doubt they'll do anything with it after the s-curve is put in. What's fixed is fixed.

What was wrong with Magnum's third hill?

Just looked at the webcam. There's now a second crane on site..

Freako... I may be wrong because I don't have as much knowledge as most the others in these discussions, but didn't Son of the Beast at King's Island have the loop removed/or is having the loop removed?

I think they were using the second crane to load the track pieces onto a flatbed and out of the ride area.

Yeah, it's been a slow day here at work :)

I believe the third hill on Magnum was reprofiled after the first season. The pull out of the third hill was much lower to the ground than it is today, causing a violent transition into the pretzel. If you look at the structure today, you can see where the track was mounted to the supports for that original design.

The POV of when the ride opened is also on CP's website. You can see the difference there and how the trims were at the top of the third hill at one time.

So much for getting excited. :)

Wow, so the track was mounted on those lower horizontal members? That is a pretty significant change.. I did ride Magnum in its second year (when I was going to school in Rochester), but that was too long ago to remember. I would not ride it again until two or three years ago, and since then I've ridden it many, many times..

Wow - You learn something new everyday. Gotta love the interweb. :) Magnum would've been a fun one to watch being constructed since it was fabricated on-site.
