A couple of months ago, there was an newspaper article in which Cedar Fair said they would like to expand the Cedar Point resort into a year-round resort. I was just wondering what your ideas were on future expansions of the park and how they might make the Cedar Point resort a year-round destination. (And I'm not looking for crazy ideas like building a retractable dome for the park either...)
I know that it has been mentioned that Cedar Fair owns a lot of property on the mainland. What are your opinions of expansion onto the mainland. I don't think that Cedar Point itself could really expand onto the mainland, but what do you think of the possibility of Cedar Fair actually building another park on the mainland?
As far as Soak City goes, the thought of it being transferred to the mainland has always sat in the back of my mind. If you think about it, Cedar Point's location on the historic penninusla is very important, however there is no reason for Soak City to remain on the penninsula nor would it need to be located next to the lake on the mainland. While we ALL know that Cedar Point does not have a space problem (don't even start that conversation here!), but it would indeed give the park a lot of extra space.
While Cedar Fair does not have the best reputation as far as theming goes, I think it would be very, very cool to have a themed resort hotel at the Point. While the convenience of staying right next to the park is what draws people to Breakers and Sandcastle, I think that if they built a very nice themed hotel on the mainland shore, thus overlooking the park, and worked out a GOOD and EFFICIENT system of transportation, they could really do gangbusters with it. What do you think?
As for making it a year-round resort, I don't know what to say, that's why I'm opening the discussion up to all of you.
I mentioned in a previous post about Hard Rock/Planet Hollywood that it would be pretty neat for Cedar Point to have an area similar to Downtown Disney/Universal CityWalk. While it was discussed that it could most likely survive next to the park in the summer, it wouldn't have too much business in the winter. If, however, they found a way to make the Point a year-round destination, I could see this kind of area really taking off. Maybe. :)
The only problem I can see with having a year-round resort is employment. I think that they have enough people apply to Cedar Point alone to staff two amusement parks in the summer, but I don't know that they would have folks in the winter months since the majority of their employees are college students. Thoughts?
A final question, exactly how much land does Cedar Fair own on mainland? :)
Phew!

It was always the "when CP runs out of room" conversation when I worked there. (Ages ago- Mantis was New and not faded) they are so far off from anything drastic like that, but they do own alot of property off point which makes you wonder what the heck it's for if not some sort of future expansion. Maybe they would build nice employee apartments or something to attract people to work there year round.

I like the idea of moving Soak City. It really is like a seperate park since it has it a cost too. The new space made could be used for the 500foot coaster they're putting in 2007

I DONT think that they should move soak city for many reasons..ok 2:
1. how the heck would they move everything?
and
2. I like soak city right where it is. If Cedar Point didnt have Soak City right there within 10 years or somthing, and thats why alot of you think it is "out of place" I wouldnt remember 10 years ago. I think that Soak City is great where it is. When I ride Magnum I always look at the people on the slides and in the pools, and when I go to Soak City, I put my stuff down on the grass, I put my hair up, and I try to talk to the people riding magnum. I dont think they ever hear me though...:(
One thing that I REALLY like is that City Walk idea. That'd be cool, they'd have resturaunts to go to, and I remember once I went to Cedar Point, and stayed at the campgrounds, and for a whole 36hours I was right by Cedar Point and had nothing to do but homework. If they had a City walk I could have gone there with my dad and not have had to eat burnt food. And, when I went to IOA it was so fun on the City Walk, I remember looking accross the water eating my hotdog..yummm:)
If Cedar Point hires year-round employees...in a few years..I'll move to OHIO and I'll be work'n there!
I thought the Titanic was in texas! Silly me..;)

Add a couple of other winter attractions and POOF, CP could be open all year--or at least most of it.

"If we go any faster, she'll blow apart for sure!"
But seriously, I don't see how CP could become a year round resort without a casino. What's there to do in that part of Ohio in the winter. You can't exactly go ice fishing on Lake Erie.
I would hope that before considering go year round, they would add some night life to the park. A dance club would be great! Shopping would help also. Please offer more than just CP souvenirs.
CP would also need to consider some type of shuttle service if they plan on expanding. This would be complicated by the water Maybe they could widen the causeway and run a monorail shuttle over it.

Actually, ice fishing is a very popular activity on Lake Erie, in the Cedar Point area, and west towards the islands. You can find a number of ice guides to help you, and many times you hear stories of people losing SUVs, snowmobiles, etc. when the ice flows break away and drift in the spring.

Florida may have Disneyworld and Key West,
but Ohio has Cedar Point and Put-In-Bay.
It's great to live in Ohio!

And the current entrance is not set up to carry hundreds of people to a new roller coaster.
