I'd be really interested to know how much it costs to maintain MS versus a ride like The Voyage. Both are comparable enough in track length, but I'd bet it's much less for The Voyage due to better design.
If there really is a difference in maintenance costs, I can't see why it wouldn't make sense to remove MS from end of first drop to final brakes and rebuild the rest. It couldn't cost more than $5 million, would be a marketable and enjoyable new ride, and would partially make up for itself in saved maintenance costs....
Mean Streaks a pretty good ride. But every time I watch it, it gets closer and closer to having a roll-back or valley. I wouldn't want to be on a train that valleys.
^^^I dont know exactly how much maintenance costs are for MS, but I watched a video in Speed Zone and they described just what it takes to keep MS open and running "smoothly". And it isnt exactly a walk in the park (o pun intended). I give BIG props to the mechanics that deal with MS.

Back to moving the entrance. Could it be possible to unload the train on the Mean Streak side of the tracks, but continue to load from the current location. This would increase the traffic flow near Mean Streak and also it would make people more familiar with where the entrance is. This would also help if they had a sign above the entrance. Traffic flow would then cross the track in front of the train on the present midway.

There is no way they would retrofit the layout to fit a new ride. The cost would be so negligible to keep just a few elements that it would be easier to just start over. You'd have to rename it anyway since you can't re-market a 17 year old ride.
They had problems with the train valleying after first putting in the trim brakes on the first drop. Now that they have been there for years, I highly doubt they have difficulty keeping it from valleying. I'm sure they have figured out what they can and can't do (like sending empty trains in cold temps).
You can still watch the ride without trims on the cedarpoint.com POV.

I really disagree that MS could not be modified into a great ride while also saving a ton of money. I am guessing that it would be very possible to retain the final brakes, station, trains, lift and first drop and build a whole new ride in between. Saving those pieces would save well over a million dollars, which would be a substantial saving on a wooden coaster. It could be renamed and marketed well, and could probably be done for less money than maXair or Skyhawk.
Call Intamin. Retrack it with pre-fab. Case closed. But, I know that will never happen, so it's either lose an amazingly beautiful coaster, or have it sit there and be painful. Although, my last trip we rode it twice and enjoyed it. Go figure.
I haven't enjoyed a ride on that thing in... ever, really. Even running as designed, it's a mostly boring and uninspired layout.

Mean streak and disaster transport is not going nowhere. and mean streak is not going to put to sleep in a few years.
Turn the trains backward! :P
I love MS... Sit in the 2nd last seat.. It's really not that painful, and you get to listen to the people in the back seat being dominated the entire ride haha. It's pretty funny.

I love the ride when im in one of the front cars. The front seat is great. This last season I wanted to see what the back seat was like. I will never do that again. I believe my spleen is somewhere on the first banked curve. Everywhere on the ride is fine but that back seat. It bounced me around so much it hurt. Thats just my opinion though.

We noticed on our last trip that the first row in each car is smoother than the second row in each car. So, that's where we sit from now on.
As far as the layout goes, I actually like it. I love flying through the structure and around the big helix way up in the air. If it was smoother and faster, I'd love it. Oh wait - it was. :)
I say what the other people have been saying. If cp doesn't get rid of the ride, let's just take matters into our own hands. Everyone go to the store and start to stock up on matches.
^I think they may notice if a few hundred CP coaster enthusiasts stock up on matches all at the same time.
