Apparently the dinos are pretty polarizing. I love them, especially how they have sprinkled them around the park, and even in the Breakers lobby.
That said, I think they should be free to everyone really, and should have been from the start, and even more so nowadays because the motion sensors seem to be less accurate each year.
We enjoy a stroll through the dinosaurs when the park is busy on Saturday when we go in May. My son enjoys them and we take some neat photos while in there.
When you buy tickets online for the dinosaurs there are different prices depending on the number of tickets you buy. One ticket is $6, 2 are $4 each, 3 are $3 each, and 4 or more are $2.50 each.

It totally ruins the new entrance and just looks stupid.
It sounds as if you're irrationally preoccupied with the dinosaur.

Even though lots of people were happy to pay to see them?

^agree with ya there. If the park gets some extra bucks during the season from families, enthusiasts, and school groups to walk through the exibit, so be it. Extra money will reach me eventually in the form of venues, attractions, and maybe future exhibits.
Besides, stuff that I prefer may not be stuff that someone else does. I find dinosaurs unfascinating, especially fake ones with poor movements, it's just not for me. However a kid reading or really interested by em, by all means let em through, and if his parents fork out a ticket, sweet, maybe later in the future I'll get something I want with that extra cash.

By that token, maybe the park should charge a toll for everyone walking through the new Gemini Midway. I mean, if they can make a buck, and people will happily pay it, why not do it?
The fact that people were happy to pay the upcharge is adequate justification for making it an upcharge attraction. Your counter-argument seems to be that it's immoral to charge extra money on top of general admission. Keep in mind that Challenge Park, Soak City, arcade games, and so on are all upcharge attractions as well.
Regardless, don't be fooled - if they hadn't made DA an upcharge attraction, every single guest would have been paying for it through increased prices somewhere, most likely admission. It's all perception. So no matter what, you'd still be paying for it.

You're assuming people were happy to pay the upcharge, and I argue that most weren't. They paid it, but probably because they wanted to make their kids happy, but the adults, most probably match those on here, in that it's not all that exciting. I really doubt any dad with a family of four left Dinosaur Island thinking "Wow, that was $20 well spent!"
And as for paying for new things whether they are upcharged or not, duh? Gatekeeper wasn't paid for with fairy wings and pixie dust.
Cedar Point is the one drawing the lines, I'm actually against them because I'm of the mindset that you should pay the one price and get everything they offer ride/theming/experience-wise for free. If they charge for go-karts, why don't they charge for a ride on Maverick? Then consider park-to-park comparisons. Why is Cedar Point's Soak City a separate charge and King's Island's waterpark is not?
That being said, the answer is mostly "because they can."
I don't like all the compartmentalizing of things like that because it puts things on a slippery slope. Before you know it, they will start treating (and charging for) Halloweekends as an entire separate season. King's Island already does with their Halloween Haunt (regular season pass holders don't get the Haunt, gold and platinum do).

You bringing this of made this thought pop into my head.
Maybe they are adding it to the Platinum Pass holders perks because they are trying to increase the reasoning to purchase a platinum pass?

I think it's more to do with them trying to increase the reasoning for an increase in the price of a platinum pass.
