CP Dorm Team

Some friends and I were thinking about starting a Dorm Team (Hall Government) once we get to CP to discuss and try to get some housing issues resolved. We could meet in one of the dorms like every week or so to discuss some problems we might have with housing or maybe the cafe also. What do you guys think?

There is something similar to this, it is your employee represenative who meets once a month i believe with silver tags to discuss these very issues.

Yeah, I know about their meetings, but regular employee's are not allowed to attend, and they also schedule them during our working hours. Because of this, they do not get a very representative opinion on employee housing issues. We just think we need a place to go to discuss some things and try to get them resolved. And then maybe we can turn in our suggestions/problems to representative that can then take it to their meetings.

You can already talk to those people and tell them your opinions, which they relay at those meetings.

Many of us have tried this in the past. We called the head about some problems we were having and none of our issues seemed to ever be resolved.

This will be my first summer so I am wondering what kind of problems come up?
Some of things we had problems with were people smoking in the hallways, not having any paper towels in the Gold bathrooms, we wanted to try to get hooks for the shower rooms to hang your towels on, and then some more stuff with the cafe.

Want to change it... apply to be on the commitee this coming season. You're not going to get another panel formed. There's really no need for it when it's already in place.

I have never heard of anyone ever being able to just apply to the committee. We don't want to get another panel formed, we just want to get together to discuss some problems we are having or some suggestions and then maybe turn them into a representative to take to their meeting.

I do plan on digging more into it this season, but last season I had asked about it and I was just plain out told red tags are not allowed, only blue tags and silver tags go.

That's not true. Generally, red tags are preffered and they try to look for people who are first year employees (They have a fresh perspective and won't have clouded thoughts from previous years). Each division is allowed one or two people, depending on the size of the division. The only silver tags that go are the VP's of each Division, The Director of Human Resources and the General Manager.

Without Environmental Services Cedar Point would be a dirty park!

touchy subject. (mary dont worry theres nothing to worry about.)

If you'd be using this committee to try and police your dorm, to try to become some glorified RA...then cut the idea now. CP has rules in place and security to deal with it. If you'd be using this committee to police the employees who work the dorm... cut the idea. Their jobs are already hard enough having to clean those bathrooms, which we all know get raunchy sometimes. Last thing they need are a bunch of their equals breathing down their backs.

What i think would be cool tho is some kind of floor committee that organizes fun stuff. Sports, movies, whatever. But then again... we have ESD for all of that.

But in all reality, you're already working 60+ hours a week. You can't honestly say you have the free time to devote to something like this. It'll all just turn into some image thing... and people wont go for that.

and yah... untrue about the red tag thing. If you reeeeeally want to be an employee representative -- ask your manager.

It's alot easier to be one than you think. Considering most people aren't interested because the meetings are unpaid and reeeally early in the morning.

Ok, #1, there is practically no work involved in doing this. It would just be like a little meeting to say "Hey, is there anything you guys would like to see changed about housing?". We would just jot some ideas down and then turn them in. That's all! It's not a big thing like you think. #2, Hasn't there been anything that you guys thought "I wish they would change/fix that in our dorm"? This is a way we can tell them that something is a problem and it needs to be changed/fixed. It's definitely not some "glorified RA" position thing. You have the totally wrong idea. It would have nothing to do with employee housing workers. And it's definitely not just one person who feels this way, it's many people. We were just getting on here to see if anyone else was interested or had any good ideas for it.

I'm all for anything to improve the dorm situation. Anyone who knows me pretty well knows my opinion about the kind of garbage that occurs in them from time to time.

Cedar Point's housing would be a LOT better with a staff of RAs to handle issues, rather than the police. In my experience, the police are less concerned about fixing the problem for good than just postponing for awhile. Because I'm an experienced RA, I've actually been able to help some of my roommates with some of the issues they've dealt with because I have the training. The opinion is often that "We're all adults and we can handle it without having an RA staff..." RAs aren't necessarily power-hungry people who want to "get you" for something; they're there because they care for other students and want to help them out... with the young age of some of the employees who live in CP housing (for example, those who are fresh out of high school and haven't been to college yet) having someone that is experienced and easily approachable could be helpful.

they had actual RA jobs before?!

let's change this post's direction a little bit... what do you think are the 3 biggest problems with housing?

I only have 1 and its the rare occasion when i get caught leaving a rock or going into the stupid exit only doors.

other than that... noise, random bra hanging from my door handle, etc. i could care less because its not like school - i dont need it to be quiet so i can study or something.

Well, my major problem last year was i lived with a bunch of dirty dirty people. (Dave H. if your reading this i am not talking about you bro) But the people i lived with left trash freakin everywhere and left dirty sometimes wet clothes out on floor. It was disgusting. Hopefully, i will not have that problem again this summer.

Second on the dirty people...they left empty wrappers and bottles everywhere -- even in the living room, on the coffee table, when they didn't even need to leave the couch really to get to the trash can. Filthy, food-encrusted dishes left in the sink for weeks until one of us clean people got sick enough of them to do them for them...rotten food in the fridge, and of course, spilled ashtrays that no one ever could figure out who was supposed to clean up. The bathroom was even worse; I ended up cleaning it most of the time because I couldn't stand using it when it was so gross... Makes you wonder what sort of nasty living environment a lot of people come from. Of course, laziness was a huge issue, too... ICK!!

My next complaint would have to be the extremely lax, almost ignorant policy about alcohol. It's so nice when you're trying to sleep because you need to get up for work at 6 am when your roommates -- who are planning to skip work anyway -- decide to throw a huge beer bash and their drunken revels keep you up all night. People sneak in so much stuff to the apartments it's unreal...and there's quite a bit of underage drinking, too. CP says they have an apartment alcohol policy, but it's not really enforced all that well. As long as you have a good backpack, you've apparently got it made.

I guess my complaints about CP housing have more to do with the people who live there than the housing itself. Some of the housing is a bit old, but it would be a lot nicer if people just kept it clean. It would be nice if people were more responsible and had a bit of respect for themselves and their roommates, too. Unfortunately, there isn't much one can do about it, except pray you get in with a good group of people, or find one person you like and get a dorm room.
