Could this happen??

I was wondering what the max speed the LIMs could make.  Is it possible they could generate enough power to send the train off the track? I know it won't happen but I was just wondering if it is possible or is the speed they posted the highest possible speed?

You don't run Linear Induction Motors at 100%...

If I remember.. most of the current LIM coasters are running around 60%.

O.k Way to freak me out.

So then it is possible for the LIMS, in theory, to generate enough power to send the train screaming up off the track?  It just seems to me that they would not have the LIMS able to accomplish such a feat.
The speed and energy useage is governed by the control and safety computer and electrically protected by limiting the current draw. To get the ride going faster than it's set for would cause an excessive current draw and trigger open the power contacts.

In theory...

Or in another case, cause a huge blackout, caused by a small explosion at the substation. In theory that might be possible...  In reality it'll probably blow a transformer and make a small brownout.

I would imagine they have something on the ends so it cannot fly off?

There are "plungers" of sorts on the ends of S:UE, I would imagine the other Impulses have something similar.

it could maybe blow up at 100%???

but i think if it isable to do that

there would be stops atthe tops of the twistes and after you wanted to turn the lims on over 60% you need a masters ky or something

Excuse me, where is the 10:00 Laser Show Presented by FirstEnegry??

So basically your teling me that whoever has the master key can get (hypothetically) pissed off at cp, turn the lims to 100 % and kill people. Oh Yeah. How Nice

You can't run them at 100%. The system isn't set to carry that much electrical current by design.

Much like your car is actually limited by several systems so as not to be able to run higher than originally set for. Things like fuseable links, restrictors, size of pumps. Same thing here. The contact realys and electrical system would most likely not be able to handle a full load for safety reasons.

CP_Rider, will you read and not assume such an idiodic idea.  The LIM's arn't gonna launch the trains off the track.  That sounds like some futuristic movie, "A master key will engage the LIM's at 100%".  The ends of the track do have some sort of block that the track forms.  You can't just turn up the power of the launch by pushing a button.
it's called sarcastic. But You do have to think that the ends can only handle so much.

Then instead of a "rollback" we would experience a "fallback"

Later Wally

Wallyworld, I don't get what you mean by "Fallback".  I think it would be called "Fall Off", or "Roll Off".

Or How About a "Rocket Launch Into The Lake?":)

I can't rember who said it, it might have been several people, but back in the 1000 post thread(I don't want to read through it either to find who it was), someone mentioned a Rocket launch ride into the lake as a "guess" for the new ride for 2002."

hehehe...:) I kinda guessed at it right. Somewhere in the big thread i said about a s:ue but backwards. Kinda Like This one

Look at post #8 in that thread.. hehehehe

Anyways... shooting off the ends isn't going to happen. There are many safety systems in place to prevent it.

Of course, the video at the GOCC holiday party sure made it look like it'll come close. ;)  Everyone in the room gasped as it got to the top of the tower, to which Bryan replied "It won't really do that."  Pretty funny, really.
