That "small wrench" is a manual release tool, which allows the release of the harnesses or allows the seats to move vertically. More often, a seat leaves the station a little too high or a little too low, so a hold is called and the seat in question is adjusted before the ride continues, ensuring the safety of all guests. As to why it took 20-30 minutes, that's up to the imagination.
I've seen the Wicked Twister get stuck a few times on the 2nd or 3rd launch, after 20 minutes they were pulled back in and given another ride. See that happen more than once made me wonder what was going on.
I got stuck on Millennium on the brake run after a power outage last year. The last 2 rows had to wait about 20 min till they could push the car forward enough so we could get out. They asked us if we wanted anything and we said a ride on Maverick, so they told us to walk over to it and go up the exit ramp and hop on.
I didn't see any birds, I was watching it the whole time since it stopped. They had to run it empty a few times afterwards. Good thing was it shortened the queue line and everyone left, so my boyfriend got on right away.
I wish I could prop myself high enough on the test seat to ride it, but I can't :(
Inside the station, on either side of the track, there are light beams forming a "wall". If anything passes through this at any time during operation, the train will brake as soon as it can. It doesn't take much, and you could very easily miss a bird flying through the station and breaking the wall.

Ah o.k., sounds like that problem occurs a lot then since I saw that problem happen about 3 times the day I went last year. (Since I'm a smoker I sit over by the WT and watch the ride)
I was stuck and had to walk off the second lift hill of Big Bad Wolf at Busch Gardens when the chain broke. The only potentially scary part of it was when the train behind us crested the first lift hill and we felt the track shaking as it worked its way to the break run just prior to the second lift hill. The train behind us stopped fine on the break run but it was a little nerve racking for a few seconds.

Never had to walk down, but I've been stuck on Mean Streak's Final brake run for about 25 minutes while they had to clean up a "mess" in the station. It was really boring since there's nothing to really look at. You're just stuck inside a massive jumble of wooden beams.
Also got stuck on Raptor's final brake run opening week last year wich was absolutely miserable at it got freezing cold and you had no way to move.
Chain stopped on Magnum and everybody freaked out.
Ride Malfunction on Maverick, got the last train before it got shut down for repairs, so yeah, stuck on brake run for about 25 minutes again.
I think it would be cool to be stuck on maxair or skyhawk when they go into free swing.......but that's just me! :)

Probably for the first couple minutes it would be, then I'd probably get PO'd and go nuts waiting while there's raptor and Wicked Twister right there.

If I ever meet you in the park, you're riding on the train behind me. ;)
I Lol'd.
I got stuck on top gun at KI, all we got were a front of line pass to any other thrill ride at the park.

Since it has been asked a couple of times and not answered...
If the park walks people off of the ride, they like to get a list of names so that if anything comes up later, they can figure out whether the story has merit. As for why, I direct you to an incident that happened at another park: Two 18-passenger trains collided with each other in the station. Neither train was fully loaded. 38 people were transported to local hospitals. Perhaps you see a problem here...!
I've had "extended rides" on Magnum, Iron Dragon, and Mine Ride. I once had to exit Mine Ride from the old unload platform in the tunnel, but the only time I have had to walk off of a ride from an unconventional exit point was at Holiday World when I was riding the Legend and the bell came crashing down from its belfry and was dangling over the track at the station entrance. We stopped on the brake run and walked the catwalk back to the station.
