Cedars!

Ok, from searching and looking at old topics, I have seen both good and extremely bad things about Cedars Dorms. Some of them are said to be rumors, some are said to be true. I was thinking about living there this summer. (it will be my first summer). I don't do well with filth, and i have heard that it is pretty dirty. I also don't care about the "its the gay dorm" thing cause that doesn't bother me. Can anybody please give me the real deal on what living in Cedars is like?

The following description is from when I was there in 1998-1999. So take note that things might be better than what is described here. And some things may have changed.

First the rooms. They are 2-3 person rooms but are on the small side. All have one set of bunk beds with one single for the 3rd person. Here is an example of the size. For width: if you take all three beds and lined them up side by side they would barely fit, if at all. As far as length take one bed and place it perpindicular on the end of another and you'll have enough room to open the door. Besides the bed there is one dresser for each person. You are allowed a TV, but there is no cable and antenna reception is poor. Also, there is one window in each room with a screen, one celling light, and a telephone. In all the rooms, to my knowledge, the floors are bare but this does provide for easy cleaning. One last thing, bring a quilt or heavy blanket as they don't allow nor provide heaters of any kind within Cedars. And it can get quite cold at night during May and September/October; if they let anyone stay in Cedars during late October, they might move them to off-point dorms/apartments this late in the year.

The one thing you most likely won't like is the showers. There are two large shower areas along with a few single showers/bathrooms in the three wings lined up one after the next. They, are kept reletivly clean, cleaned twice a day, I recommend geting some sandals, aka shower shoes, but the curtans do get torn up or go missing quite often. Also, except for the stalls along the back wall, there is only hot water, in the 2 large areas.

Besides the above the one other thing you will probably notice is an abundance of spiders. They are all over the place and most likely outnumber the number of employees staying in Cedars. <--this is only a guess on my part.

All in all, Cedars isn't a bad place to stay. It's cheaper and less crowded than an off-point apartment and has the advantage of being right next to the park. The people I met were all friendly and overall I had a good stay. So if you don't mind the quirks, and can live in a small space, then this is a good place to stay. Enjoy your summer.

Thanks a lot Monster Ride Op. That was the kind of description i was looking for. Spiders??? I'm terrified of spiders, so i guess Cedars won't be my best bet. Oh well, i still have a little while to decide. Any other opinions out there?

They are dirty and worn down. You can clean the room up, sure, but if you're comparing Commons to Cedars in terms of cleanliness of facilities and rooms, Commons will definitely, definitely beat the crap out of Cedars. Cedars is how old, like a century?

Cedars was built sometime between 1911 and 1915 (one of those videos that played over and over in my store)

i'm terrified of spiders too... but in a way my summer at cedars helped me get over that.

well except for the day that i stood beside my bed in total fear, for what seemed like an hour, because there was a spider on my blanket and i really needed to goto bed.

Other than that 1 time tho, i never saw a spider in the room. They're usually on their webs on the outdoor wing connector walkway things.

Well, I never lived in Cedars (I'm a girl anyway) but last year I started seeing someone who did live in Cedars, so I started spending a lot of time there. Before last year I'd never even been inside Cedars, and liked living off-point (Bayside and then Commons Dorms) but getting off of work and being able to just walk straight into your room was SO nice. I thought that living on-point would be too much to take, considering you worked there everyday, but I couldn't get over how nice the convenience was, and I never got tired of it. It was also nice to go to late-night employee events and then just stroll back to your room.

As for the building itself, I'm certainly in the minority but I thought it's age and condition gave it a lot of charm. I loved Cedars, and the rooms that I saw weren't really that bad...not luxurious, but not bad. The only problem was the oppresive heat. There was a single box fan in the window, and it didn't do anything. I'd have to suggest getting an air-conditioner or three or four fans for your room if you stay there. The entire Cedars building is, at all times, 15 degrees warmer than what it is outside. All in all, it's really not bad, at least IMO.

Thanks a lot guys. I just wanted to make sure I wouldn't be living in crass conditions!

I honestly didn't think that Cedars was that bad. It is so convenient to be able to go outside of the dorm and walk right into the park. There is a timeclock on the side of The Boathouse also, so you don't have to go find one in the park to use.

I didn't think the rooms were so bad. It's not like you spend a lot of time in them anyway. My room didn't get hot at all really. And it had a nice view of Power Tower from the window. :)

It's really cheap, and on the parking ban days you don't have to experience the mass chaos that is the shuttle buses.

One of the only reasons I'm staying off point this year is because that's where all my friends are staying. That's one disadvantage of Cedars, you are kind of cut off from the center of the social circle after hours.

Will Foamy become the next Strong Bad? I guess we will find out...

Caution: Foamy isn't quite as "PC" as Strong Bad.

Like how true?

Because I heard almost everyone is.

If you have worked there I would also like to know if it is worth wild to work there.

Girls & Guys, it is true, have seen it last summer when I was there, but most of them aren't a problem, and I wasn't offended by them at all, just stick with it and don't point them out, they won't hurt you.

------------------

"Almost everyone" isn't quite accurate. Color me crazy, but there seem to be more gay guys in rides than foods.

A figure between a quarter and a half wouldn't surprise me.

Why does it even matter how many gay people there are there?

It doesn't, at least not to me. If anything it makes life more interseting if you do stay in Cedars. They are nice to most everybody and can create some interesting, if slightly odd, moments. Such as this one; one night I went to the main desk and saw three guys dressed in drag. I was then asked by one of them how they looked. This was definitly the odd point of the evening. And it made for some interesting conversation with my roommate later that night.

Just out of curiosity, are their more gay people at ceaders then stright?

I really cannot answer that question because i live in Commons last year i have heard that alot of homosexuals live in Ceadars.

I would like to make one point. To any one who is thinking of working at the Point. Do not be turned off by the fact that there are alot homosexuals that work there. Last year I thought it would bother me but when I got there and started work I kept an open mind after a while it did not bother me. You will have a great time and make life long friends.

heh - after all... the only difference between a gay guy and a straight guy, in esscence, is who they are inclined to be attracted to.

I've had more than a few gay friends in my life. If you're not gay, they don't try to pull anything on you... no pun intended... and if you are, well then it wouldn't be a problem would it?

just relax. gay people are some of the nicest out there - just a bit different from the majority in their choice of significant others =)

Amatures practice until they get it right, while professionals practice until they can't get it wrong!

The shower curtains have little wholes cut in them both for man on man viewing pleasure and poky poky. I lived in cedars during the 2k season and got super lucky with good roommates, one guy was a Hindu and prayed 3 times a day he was totally honest so I did not have to worry about the $300 a day I was bringing home a day I cash getting yanked (I still hid it). The secrete to living at Cedars is good roommates and never use the showers there. The boathouse is right next to cedars and they have great showers that are never full. It worked out for me but I came to CP from Seattle without a car, all my west coast buddies lived there and I worked 80hrs a week so the bus thing would have sucked anyway. Hope that helps,Marco
