Calypso and Turnpike Cars land

How about best and most fun?

Like an LSM flyer from B&M that's nicely integrated into the terrain and new midway? ;)

For what its worth I had heard that GTT was originally going to be removed after the 2015 season. It was pushed up a year because of how bad the roof was, which I can attest to it being in bad shape.

^ It would have been weird though to have a 40th anniversary celebration this year and then tear it down right afterward, it was probably a good decision, timing wise, anyway.

I agree with RCMAC of this new open land being a Maverick type project (2005-2007) with the current tear down mostly in 2014, the footers/ prep work in 2015, and the final product in 2016. Should be interesting.

My thoughts when I opened this thread were along the lines of keeping the dead end midway.

This area has been special to me in terms of the Pirate ride ,Blue streak of course, and the Jets that you could control yourself. . They were so fun right there next to blue streak.

I would like to see it remain a dead end and the new land is used for something that continues that young person fun. That midway should entice a young person to look at the Blue Streak and try to decide if you are ready for it for the first time.....

With an underwater into the bay.

What if Cedar Point's next coaster went underground under where you can walk? Perhaps a glass floor so that you can see when it passes under you?

Are there even any buildings at Cedar Point with basements?

I don't even think something like the new entrance at Carowinds would be possible with the water table at CP.

Of course it's possible, just more expensive.

I'd rather be in my boat with a drink on the rocks,
than in the drink with a boat on the rocks.

A bridge with a glass floor would be super cool. I'm fairly sure that Carowinds had that in the works originally but they decided against it when they came up with the final designs. Maybe the up keep on a glass bridge would be a little tough. I would think it would get a little scratched up and foggy after a few seasons.

If memory serves me right, the closest thing to a basement is the pit under Cedar Downs, and the service pits in the CP&LE engine house. You dig down a couple of feet out there and you hit water.

Some of the filter buildings in Soak City have pretty deep pits (basements) of at least 15 feet. Like Pete said, it can be done but it will just cost more money.

Is there (or was there) not some sort of basement space at Breakers? There was an illegal casino/speakeasy there during prohibition and it seems that a logical place for such an operation would be underground.

Me: "It's a roller coaster, not a broken clothes hamper."

I know it might seem like that, but if that was really the case, you wouldn't be able to dig deep enough to have footers for the coaster supports (especially the bigger ones), or any big structure.

Sure bout that?
Footers are placed for structures and bridges directly over water all the time.

I think I remember hearing that Cedar Point's way around the water table is shallower holes but wider bases when making a footer. Of course, some rides needed deeper holes and remember hearing how much tougher it was making those footers (Slingshot coming to mind).

Oh you definitely can pour footers for skyscrapers in this type of soil. It has to do with the laws of displacement. It's called the Root system after it's inventor John W. Root. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Wellborn_Root

Right.
No engineer here, but Cedar Point's coaster and ride footers need special treatment before they can be set. It's a necessary chore for rides, the park's bread and butter, and vaults for electric and such, but probably not worth it for basements and below-grade tunnels.
I don't think in the history of the park have they dug below ground level for the path of a ride. But deep, solid footers were necessary for rides like Space Spiral and Windseeker.

It will be interesting to see, if indeed a dive coaster is in our future, if the extra steps are taken to trench out an "underground" path that is the hallmark of such rides.
