Area 51 vs. DDR obsession

Where's the suggestion box? (other than http://www.guidetothepoint.com/cpplace.aspx ) I'm up for it!

I resign from the game of life if I have to play with stupidity.

I can't believe you all are into ddr as well... I got into ddr in the 2001 season when it was in front at the arcade. I got so into i started building my own platforms that you can see here... http://www-personal.umich.edu/~baumd/1.JPG if you guys ever wanna hang and play some ddr, let me know. PS, before I left the 2001 season, i wasn't sure if i was going to come back to do live e again, after one of our shows I implored some silver tag in games to update the ddr to a newer mix... I don't have to tell you they didn't which was upsetting ot me. However I brought my pad into cedars and played there ;) PS Im that guy at ddrfreak who posts as cedarpointddrman...

Many of the people on DDRFreak are quite...obsessed..but remember that most (all but a few?) of them are in middle or high school, and such obsessions seem to come more easily then :) . I just had to giggle when I saw the thread that said "I HATE MY MOM! I WOULDN'T OBEY HER AND NOW I'M NOT ALLOWED TO PLAY DDR ANYMORE TODAY!1 WHAT WILL I DO??!1"

Yeah, that's some pretty funny stuff. I get irritated when the little snots show up at the arcade and are banging out 9-footers like they're nothing.

Anyone who has a PS2 and is into DDR at all, go out and grab a copy of DDRMAX! I cannot stop playing it... so many awesome songs and a lot of great new features.

My son got DDRMAX yesterday. I even tried my hand (feet?) at it this afternoon. The freestyle steps add another neat twist.

Is DDRMax just like the Britney Spears Dance game for Playstation 2?

The Britney game is a total piece of crap. It has six or seven songs. DDRMAX has upward of 70, each with three levels of difficulty plus doubles.

Thanks for explaining the difference. I was going to buy a Dance game and didn't know which one to get. How much is a decent dance pad run these days?

If you're serious, you should probably pony up for "ignition" pads. I just got a pair from here and they seem more than adequate, and far better than the thin crap you buy locally:

You know, I actually had that god-awful "Britney's Dance Beat" for about a month. I heard it was compatible with the Dance Pad, so despite the fact that Britney's music isn't really that great, I plunked down the $40 and bought a copy. What a mistake. The dance pad moves were FAR too easy, and like Jeff mentioned, there are only FIVE songs (the first 5 rounds you play half of the song, the next 5 you play the full song).

One of the "highlights" of the game is the concert footage you can unlock. You are supposedly able to control the camera in 360 degrees. Too bad they don't tell you that the view of the stage is from about a mile back and the footage is far from DVD quality and rather grainy.

Stick with DDR... it's a game I won't be tiring of in the near future.

ray p. (who really wishes Sega's "Samba De Amigo" for the Dreamcast would have caught on... that was such a fun game)

Wow Jeff, thanks for that site. Those prices are really cheap... I think I may just have to get an Ignition pad now. :)

I wonder if that metal pad they have for sale is like the arcade...

Wow, that's a cheap ignition-style pad! The BNS ignition-style pad ( http://www.buynshop.com/productinfophp3/VG-DDR-ULTDX ) is very good, but watch out for ebay sellers selling the cheaper cyphergames pads and passing them off as BNS pads. (Oh, and don't buy the "hard plastic" platforms from anybody, because they suck :) )

I ordered the deluxe ignition pads from cyphergames last week and am anxiously awaiting their arrival. One of the cheap pads we had is currently being held together with duct tape.

Are the $150 Metal Pads any good? I was thinking about buying a couple of them.. (my old plastic pads are too worn out to use anymore)

Also I think it would be great if CP got a DDR 3rd mix plus, this in my opinion is the best mix yet. It has 2nd and 3rd mix all on one machine, also it has all of the good classic songs such as "butter fly" and "Dam Darim". I have a truck stop near my house that has 6th and 7th mix and they suck, but 50 cents for 3 credits (thats 9 songs), I can't really complain. I really miss 3rd mix plus though the only place I know that has it is over an hour away and its $1 for 3 songs.

My Cyphergames pads were delivered today. I'll let you know what I think.

The metal pads seen to not be in favor of anyone unless you happen to build your own. You can read a ton about them in the forums over on DDRfreak.

I'd really love a 5th mix or MAX machine at CP.

Heh, yeah I realized that after about 5 minutes. I thought it was the Red Octane one at first look but it definitely is not. I still may get the Red Octane one though... always best to go with the "original" Ignition pad (although really the Konami Deluxe pad was the "original").

By the way, I don't find MAX and MAX2 boring at all... I think they are an improvement over the previous mixes. The freeze arrows really add a fun new dimension to the songs. And Oni mode on MAX2 is really addicting if you're good enough. Granted, there are some great songs that didn't make it from 5th Mix to 7th Mix, but I still would take 7th over them all. 6th is alright, but really not on the level of the others as it only has 6th Mix songs and none from the past. 4th Mix Plus is also an awesome "underrated" mix IMO.

And there you have it, my DDR Mix views... if anyone cares. :)

Got the Deluxe Ignitions today and I love them. First thing my son noticed, though, is that the left/right arrows seem closer together. They do not bunch up, even when my son is doing heavy mode, and they do not slide around on the floor nearly as much as the cheap pads.

I like the fact they are a bit "cushier", although I would imagine after a while they'll break down a bit. And the foam inside can be replaced. Best money I've spent.

Mine work peachily and they are just the cheap ones. Got them on plywood and attached with carpet tape. They don't move at all.
